What will i get from replacing my stock coil and ignition with a hi performance coil and ignition? I just completed the conversion and was wondering what the benifits were to upgrading these components?

Thanks,
Ed

You will feel no power increase from the addition of the coil. A new set of stock plugs in the motor will do more for performance.

Depending on how the conversion was done, you might benefit from a module with timing more suited to your motor than the module you have now.

But, overall, there's very little seat of the pants performance to be gained from a coil and module (except if the curve of your original module is all wrong for the converted motor - I can't tell what year bike you have , or what conversion was done.)

Thanks Chris...

Here is the conversion details:

KB Pistons
N4 Cams
Yost Power Tube
No Head Work
Bored Cyclinders

What is going to be installed is Crane HI 4 Ignition and Coil.

Thanks,
Ed

With that combination, it will be nice to have an adjustable ignition, but I don't think you'll actually feel any performance difference. There might be between 1 and 2 horsepower difference on the dyno, but nothing significant.

I would install it just to get the adjustability. Won't hurt a thing and can only help smooth out the rough spots.

The big advantage of new ignitions is they normally have a lot more rpm range available allowing you to take advantage of better flowing heads and bigger cams.

On my Buell I have an ignition capable of letting me take it to 8,000 rpms but I really only wanted it for 7,000 rpms. My old ignition would shut down at 6750 and I still have about 3 more hp available after that.

Just have to be careful not to miss a shift if I really spool her up!! ;)

Cool... Thanks for the info... They are also suggesting a bigger carb Mukini 42mm... Would you guys do a bigger carb over the coil and ignition?

Thanks,
Ed

Personally, I don't think you NEED either. The CV carb is good to about 100 HP probably. The stock heads run out of air at high RPM, so there's no need for a higher rev limit.

So, you don't really NEED either.

I will never dissuade someone from purchasing a HSR42 Mikuni though. It is so much better than the CV. But, it's totally unnecessary.

Without cams and headwork, its fairly useless....you need to be able to take advantage of the extra R's to see any gains.....

If you're a late model, you WILL get timing control, with the right ignition, which is HANDY, but not NECESSARY....

After a conversion, there's not much you can do really, that makes a big impact, without silly money, other than cams and/or headwork......the Mik 42 won't do you any good, certainly....

Rarely will a street rider outgrow a stock cv carb........

cantolina: you and I sure aren't gonna sell a lot of parts with THAT attitude:
