View Full Version : Throttle Cable Help
cjburr 10th June 2006, 15:37 Ordered new throttle and idle cables for my S1W, guess what??? they are too long and there is no adjustment left to get them where they need to be.:( :(
I'll have to assume that because the bike has a Mikuni carb on it that because of the different carb the cables won't fit.:frownthre :frownthre
Does anyone have any suggestions on part #'s for some shorter cables or is there something I'm not seeing.
I know lots of you have Mikuni carbs and was wondering if this is a common occurence or if there is something different about this bike.
Thanks, from the frustrated Burr
chrishajer 10th June 2006, 16:06 What were you running before, and what change precipitated the need for new cables? What part number cables did you get?
How old is the Mikuni carb, and is it the SE version, new Mikuni version or an early Mikuni version? The early Mikuni ones needed special cables. The newer Mikuni and the SE all use stock cables. Since the S1W came with a CV carb, stock cables will normally work.
Something is funky. Probably related to the Mikuni. Do the cables LOOK different (i.e. Mikuni cables vs. Stock cables)? Any pics? The adjusters look very different on every style of cable, and you can generally tell them apart like that.

cjburr 10th June 2006, 16:48 The carb was on the bike when I bought it, no idea how old it is.
Cables that were on it were sticking and I found kinks in them hence the replacement.
Part #'s are Throttle Cable N0307.9, Idle Cable 5643C-96Y
The throttle cable is definitely different as the one that came off had a 90 degree elbow on it and the new one does not.
Found a thread on BadWeb and Aaron of NRHS said to bend the bracket to take up the slack. Did that and there is still way too much slack in the throttle cable.
If no one has any part numbers or ideas I guess my next stop is the bicycle shop to see if they have any ferrules I can crimp on it.
chrishajer 10th June 2006, 17:11 Sounds to me like you have an early HSR42, with Mikuni cables, not Buell cables. Stock cables will not work. The way to tell the old from the new is that the old carbs had one cable that entered the carb from the left of the bike, and the other entered the carb from the top. The new carbs that utilize stock cables both enter the carb from the left side of the bike. My guess is that you have the former.
Mikuni only lists the manual for the NEW HSR42 on their site, which states that the stock cables will work, but that's not true for their older carbs (7 or more years ago, probably.)
You might want to call Mikuni and see what they can say about the cables:
Mikuni American Corporation
8910 Mikuni Avenue
Northridge, CA 91324-3496
Tel: (818) 885-1242
Fax: (818) 993-6877
You could also call Barnett and tell them your application and they will get you the proper cables:
Barnett Tool & Engineering
2238 Palma Drive
Ventura, CA 93003
Phone : (805) 642-9435
Fax : (805) 642-9436
E-mail : info@barnettclutches.com
I don't think you can order directly from either source, but they can tell you what you need.
I would not recommend modifying the cables by adding a bicycle ferrule. Some motorcycle shops can solder new ends on properly after shortening the wire, but don't use a crimp on or tension screw ferrule. It's not really safe. Buell has been sued before for throttle cable problems, and it's not something I would recommend you do. Just my $.02

cjburr 10th June 2006, 17:29 Went down the street to the indy and got some tension screw ferrules, what exactly would be the problem with using them ?? I planned on laying some solder in the hole once I had them the correct length, are they likely to come loose ??
Thanks for the numbers and the info Chris
chrishajer 10th June 2006, 17:40 I am very leery of installing anything in the throttle control that MIGHT be a problem at any point. I prefer to use a solder pot and solder new ends on properly. It's a personal thing with me.
I suppose they will work, and if you're confident the ends are on securely once they're installed, they'll be OK.
The problem with messing with that area, on Buells, is the the throttles have been known to stick wide open ( I think Buell recall 0827, for 99-00 X1 with EFI covered this. ) A ferrule falling off the end of the cable would probably leave you stranded, but not lock the throttle wide open.
Just be careful, that's all.

cjburr 10th June 2006, 18:04 Will do, thanks again for the advice. I will order proper cables on Monday from either Barnett or Mikuni. I am with you on using the proper cables, but I really want to ride today and I think the ferrules will do for the time being.
I've got a couple extra ferrules so I'll keep the tools handy and hopefully won't be stranded.
chrishajer 10th June 2006, 18:15 I'm sure you'll be fine, just be safe. I worry about crap like that.

chrishajer 13th June 2006, 23:17 Hope your weekend was good. I just ran across this at the J&P site:
Cables for Mikuni HSR42 and HSR45
Note: Applications listed here are for early Mikuni kits ONLY. Kits manufactured after May of 1999 use stock cables.
I was pretty close on the "7 years (http://www.xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/showpost.php?p=395336&postcount=4)" estimate, huh? ;)
It's from this page:

cjburr 14th June 2006, 01:00 Looks good Chris, I'll measure how long the cables are after I shortened them and order the right ones.
Thanks for the research and input :urock
