I had the opportunity of attending the Springfield Mile yesterday. All I have to say if you ever have a chance to attend a race like this don't pass it up.

I'm told that this is a race that really has not changed much over it's history. This is just one flat out full throttle race from start to finish. And for us "sportster lovers" it's dominated and I do mean dominated by the XR750. The way these riders run those bikes around the 1 mile track is totally amazing. My friend told me that they average around 120 MPH and I think that's pretty accurate, the 25 mile final took less than 15 minutes from start to finish.

And what a finish it was, Chris Carr was attempting to do a draft pass on the final lap coming out of turn 4 around Ken Coolbeth and it looked like Coolbeth came down on Carr. Carr put his front tire between Coolbeth's exhaust and frame and they both went into a high spped wobble, they both some how managed to save it and keep the bikes upright. Coolbeth finished first. What a finish to say the least, I'd love to be there today to see if there will be a rematch between the two. Carr stated something about " kicking some ass tomorrow" so today's racing should be interesting.

Plus just looking at the various bikes in the parking lot is worth the trip, and after the race you get a chance to walk the pits and talk to the riders and mechanics. Lots of neat stuff and the bikes are amazing. Believe it or not they only get a couple of heats out of a rear tire and they are running on mud, they flip the tire and use the other side.

Like I said earlier if you have the opportunity to attend a flat track race by all means do it you'll never forget it, trust me.

Thanks for sharing.

Back in the good old days.
Here in the los angeles area,
we had several tracks,
Ascot being one.
used to go every Fri. night.
Flat track died out,
Speedway was reborn at
Whiteman stadium in Pacoima,
went all the time.
AHHHHHHHH,
the golden past.

Guys that I went with, old timers, said the same thing about the Springfield mile. Apparently they stopped the "Mile" race for quite a few years. But if you looked at the stands you'd never think there was a loss of spectators for this sport. The stands were packed with people the fans were watching the races and having a great time. Good old fashion fun, typical carnival food vendors lots of beer vendors, just great summer fun. Plus you always have the time to look at than those hot biker chicks............you ladies know who we're talking about. ;) ;) ;)

And they killed the Indy mile.....which ran on Saturday night under the lights....and almost always had 4 riders covered by a blanket at the line........I lived in SoCal for a year or so while working for USMC.....spent lots of time at Ascot watching them duke it out....Bikes....Sprints....Midgets......Dirt track is dying though.....we want to see guys fly through the air sideways in the stadiums...that's "RAD" you know...or "narley".........."we" don't appreciate the skill and BALLS it takes to run into the corner at 120 mph and get sideways inches from 3 other guys.........pretty sad.

I just read in Cycle News that the Indy Mile will be televised on Versus Nov 2 and 6.:clap:clap From what I've read that race rivaled Springfield for racing action.
The Springfield Mile will be on Mavtv Oct 2. I've never heard of them but I checked out their website and they have some pretty cool programing. So, I sent a request to Directv to add them.

I got a little bit of a fix when Eddie Mulders West Coast vintage Flat Track came to town. They've been running short track races at our county fair for 5 or so years. We had I think 8 national numbers here with a $16,000 purse for the pro main. 20 laps of awsome racing. Jered Mees won handily again.

Yep....the Indy mile.....especially the night race during the State Fair.......grandstands packed....usually 4 guys you could throw a blanket over at the line for the win!

Great Racing.......very cool you've still got some of the Hot Shoes racing.....it's dying a slow death here in the Midwest:(:(:(:(:(
