I kind of like it when my bike is sitting there chattering between neutral and 1st (at least I think its first). ;)

I got to go with 5th here. That means I'm on the highway with no stop lights or somebody on a cell phone coming out from nowhere.....again.

i chose no gear, cuz it'd be a tie between 1st for the pull off the line, 2-3 for the twisties, and fouth and fifth for the open road. they all rock.

Any gear is my favorite....that means I'm out on my bike and riding.

Any vehicle I ride or drive, 2nd gear is always my favorite. The hard pull in 1st is fun, but nothing beat a HARD shift into 2nd and then pulling just as hard again, with the bike snarling and jumping a bit.

I love second gear in town, getting up to speed. But there is nothing like 5th gear, going 60-65 down a two lane highway.

Normally 1st and 2nd I'm pulling stright throu and made a little bit of noise... ;-) and then I'm just cruzin thu 3rd. Time to sit back and just watch the senery. And looking to wave at all the hotties in convertables. ;-p

What's not to like about 3rd? Grab a handfull and hang on up to about 110!

Very well said and I agree. Nothing like a hard shift and lifting the front end a little (883...for the moment)! I usually top out at 80 on the highway, but I love getting there as fast as possible!

5 th at 70 mph ,very smooooooth and sweet sounds coming from the exhaust.
no vibration at all. me and my bike are very happy on a good road at 70. ride safe

35-50 MPH twists and with the proper momentum 3rd gear pulls like a wild

Voted 3rd gear nothing like cracking the throtttle merging into traffic thats rolling around 35 mph on the on-ramp and you're looking for a spot to dive into or just letting her go with free space in front. hitting 70 before you can blink and it's ability to bring your speed back down with control if needed. Also like 4th for passing in traffic running above the 50 mark

3rd, definitely, 10-70 and back without messing with the clutch or gears

I know they say it will fit 94 and up Sportster and Buell, but as of the 04 rubbermount Sportster engine, the trapdoor no longer exsists and the shifter drum and fork assembly is totally different.

To fit a 6 speed transmission to your bike (if one exsists) would require a total engine tear down and the cases split. BIG job.

4th.......seems to be the most versatile to me.

5th gear, but I only got a 4 speed....:doh

I'm very fond of fourth gear. When I'm in the twisties of the New England mountains, fourth gear seems just about right. Not too high where I will stall as I slow down entering the curve, but not too low so that I can roll on the throttle and rocket around the curve at warp speed. Fourth gear is my friend.

It's probably due to having some empty roads with long straightaways and "free for all" freeway sections, but I like 5th. Just wind it out until self preservation kicks in and then back off.

I got some twisty roads out here good for first and second only. If you’re in forth it’s not twisty it's the interstate. Maybe the poll should be “what is your favorite RPM”

Like you Ed, I still have my 883 gearing in her, and it depends on just how much torque you have, and how fast you you are riding.

Yes, we have the one two and three needed ones too.
I think I am running to the coast for the weekend, I just hear those twisters a callin'.

I like power shiftin 2nd at 1/3rd throttle and gettin that CHIRP from the rear wheel and then just open her up! (Im gettin all tingly just thinkin bout it)

For me, 2nd is where the action is because that is where the adrenaline kicks in... my heart and the V-Twin open up and start pumpin', ready to rip through the gears.

:D Through first and second, my mind is racing. At third, the whole world is opened up. It has so much range. Low for getting ready to pass that geezer, let her rip, going down the on ramp, and you can shift right to fifth entering traffic with ease and confidence. You can safely brake or hammer down for a quick thrill, leavin' em all in your mirror if you can see more than your elbow. Just my $.02.

4th for all the hills around here. Gives me good power and a wide speed range, plus it has that wonderful whine, lets me pretend I'm riding a Shovelhead.

3rd; that's probably the gear I use most, and certainly where I have most fun.

Knock on wood, I never missed third gear. I can usually hold it till the other guy gives up. Even at the drags I used to leave it in third gear (I never geared a street bike for the 1/4 mile).

I like 1st gear. It wakes up the neighbors.

My bikes a 4 speed. I like to get in 4th gear as soon as possible, 40 mph, and then I can go any speed up to 120 mph.

I'm still looking for 6th, I think I lost it on the highway.....

With the new pipes, I love 1st and 2nd the most. You get on it as you start out, then hit 2nd and continue to get on that throttle and it sounds so damn good! Of course 3rd is when you start looking down at the odometer and think oh sh*t, roll off the throttle and the bike gives you that growling noise. Just like a woman not to be able to make up her mind!*** :D

My first gear will limit @45mph while second only takes me to 60. I'm a second to third gear person and third gear screams to 90. Fourth limits @105 and I haven't gone over 135 in fifth. Got to keep in mind my harley speedo isn't spot on.

I cheated with a downhill start, No wind and early morning cold air.

I voted no gear (no favorite), but really I like the in-betweens when I'm upshifting during a super fast knock yer pants off acceleration. I like the exhaust sound between shifts.

I voted for 4th because you can be lugging around at 35 give the throttle a BIG twist and be at 65 in the blink of an eye. I love the feel of that smooth acceleration! There is a 1/2 mile steep hill just before my house that I cannot resist the "throttle twist" on.

I like the 6th gear in my Sporty the most

Good thread... My favorite is 3rd had a lot of fun in 3rd and it is usually my lucky gear.....

2ed is best for crusing in the twisties. Third for the down hill brakes in the action.

I said 3rd, because on my '05, that one's like letting go of a rubber band....that's when I'm thinking to myself, "damn this thing is quick!".

I just love cruising through town, about 45 mph in 5th. Sounds sweet with those Cycle Shacks (Cycle Shacks? what a lousy name. If it were my company, I would call them "Bad Ass Rumble")

I voted for third. I really like the way it sounds at 3500 rpm with my hand at about a 1/4 throttle. It sounds just like a mellow machine gun, waiting for a blast off! I can't go past that yet 'cause I only have 200 miles on my conversion, but I am gaining more miles everyday! Man does the new bike (2000 883/1200) have power!

third gear for me.... from 2500 RPM to 6000 RPM......

sometimes I change into 3rd, move my feet from the forwards to the "business" pegs , sit up closer to the tank and hold on tight......

with the steep twisty roads around here i find most of the time 3rd gear really lugs up hills unless im going dangerously fast for the road.. so second is my business gear..

I like 4th at real high rpm and accelerating, like almost hitting the rev limiter. I like 4th just before I stick it in 5th.
Like getting on the slab in 4th and no one is around so you can wind it out real good before switching into 5th.

The way mine is geared, third at about 35 the cams and thunderheader sound great. Sorta cracks like a stock car with open headers.

I'd have to say it's a toss up between 3rd and 4th around 4K RPM. Depends on the road and traffic conditions.

That comes out to about 60 MPH on my 1200R. Easy cruising...
