View Full Version : POLL: Which is your favorite gear?
typerighter 13th June 2006, 05:06 This poll has no educational purpose at all. I'm just curious.
Mine is third gear. I think at the low RPM range, it's harmonically tuned to my body and mind. :tour
gronk62 13th June 2006, 05:18 Fifth gear is the best one.
Just me, my bike and the open road rollin' away under me...:)
Scooter_Trash 13th June 2006, 05:57 I kind of like it when my bike is sitting there chattering between neutral and 1st (at least I think its first). ;)
Hexxor_Siaxxon 13th June 2006, 06:03 I got to go with 5th here. That means I'm on the highway with no stop lights or somebody on a cell phone coming out from nowhere.....again.
Just me, my bike and the bugs.
Hex
Roadster_Rider 13th June 2006, 06:17 i chose no gear, cuz it'd be a tie between 1st for the pull off the line, 2-3 for the twisties, and fouth and fifth for the open road. they all rock.
saltman241 13th June 2006, 06:18 2nd gear. It's got that WOW we got going, but were not quite there yet feeling.
typerighter 13th June 2006, 06:49 2nd gear. It's got that WOW we got going, but were not quite there yet feeling.
Well put, Salt.
santansporty 13th June 2006, 07:20 fourth gear means I'm humming along the high country watching the hawks, lizards, rabbits, roadrunners and cactus roll by at around 50-55 mph...
hybriDatsun350 13th June 2006, 07:25 1st gear because it gets me goin! haha
Fifth gear is the best one.
Just me, my bike and the open road rollin' away under me...:)
Strewth matey :iagree
SpartanDen 13th June 2006, 13:41 Any gear is my favorite....that means I'm out on my bike and riding.
xl1200r 13th June 2006, 13:46 Any vehicle I ride or drive, 2nd gear is always my favorite. The hard pull in 1st is fun, but nothing beat a HARD shift into 2nd and then pulling just as hard again, with the bike snarling and jumping a bit.
ZanexGt 13th June 2006, 15:18 6th Gear!
Becuase one day I'll finally find it....
Scooter_Trash 13th June 2006, 15:41 First gear is alright
Second gear I lean right
Third gear hold on tight
Written back in the day when they only had 3. I wonder what they would have written about 4th, 5th, and (eventually) 6th?
Of course it was also about a Honda, but just listening to the lyrics it could have been a Sporty.
loki03xlh 13th June 2006, 16:30 I love second gear in town, getting up to speed. But there is nothing like 5th gear, going 60-65 down a two lane highway.
Swankster 13th June 2006, 16:45 WOW Man! That's way heavy. Are your legs crossed up on the tank when you're in that gear and humming simultaneously:smoke :roflblack
My favorite gear has to be the ignition key, without it nothing gets goin....:D
Swankster (new avatar & Sig)
This poll has no educational purpose at all. I'm just curious.
Mine is third gear. I think at the low RPM range, it's harmonically tuned to my body and mind. :tour
CT1200 13th June 2006, 16:48 Normally 1st and 2nd I'm pulling stright throu and made a little bit of noise... ;-) and then I'm just cruzin thu 3rd. Time to sit back and just watch the senery. And looking to wave at all the hotties in convertables. ;-p
BWP 5p 13th June 2006, 22:02 What's not to like about 3rd? Grab a handfull and hang on up to about 110!
Yeow!!!!!!!!
HuggyBear 13th June 2006, 22:37 The hard pull in 1st is fun, but nothing beat a HARD shift into 2nd and then pulling just as hard again, with the bike snarling and jumping a bit.
Very well said and I agree. Nothing like a hard shift and lifting the front end a little (883...for the moment)! I usually top out at 80 on the highway, but I love getting there as fast as possible!
greanmeany1 13th June 2006, 22:49 5 th at 70 mph ,very smooooooth and sweet sounds coming from the exhaust.
no vibration at all. me and my bike are very happy on a good road at 70. ride safe
RedRider 13th June 2006, 23:55 2nd gear is the hammer gear...
It's my favorite gear in every manual transmission vehicle.
sportysrock 14th June 2006, 01:50 taking the 4th on this one
lagerdrinker 14th June 2006, 02:49 4th gear, can go from 30-110 area...no need to shift
roadogette 14th June 2006, 03:04 Fifth gear 'cuz then I know I'm rolling down the road.
Jt1200r 14th June 2006, 21:12 i voted third but i like second also. hell i love'em all to the limiter
Jimbo999 14th June 2006, 21:19 I voted 3rd to see the poll results. There's a lot of roads around here with
35-50 MPH twists and with the proper momentum 3rd gear pulls like a wild
horse through 'em.
mustangt5 16th June 2006, 04:01 6th Gear!
Becuase one day I'll finally find it....
must be my favorite to because it seems im always trying to find it:doh
Snuffy 16th June 2006, 13:12 Voted 3rd gear nothing like cracking the throtttle merging into traffic thats rolling around 35 mph on the on-ramp and you're looking for a spot to dive into or just letting her go with free space in front. hitting 70 before you can blink and it's ability to bring your speed back down with control if needed. Also like 4th for passing in traffic running above the 50 mark
Fizz.GB 16th June 2006, 14:49 3rd, definitely, 10-70 and back without messing with the clutch or gears
typerighter 19th June 2006, 04:22 6th Gear!
Becuase one day I'll finally find it....
Actually, here it is:

gronk62 19th June 2006, 07:44 Actually, here it is:
http://www.andrews-products.com/motorcycle/cams/baker_6_speed_buell.htm
I know they say it will fit 94 and up Sportster and Buell, but as of the 04 rubbermount Sportster engine, the trapdoor no longer exsists and the shifter drum and fork assembly is totally different.
To fit a 6 speed transmission to your bike (if one exsists) would require a total engine tear down and the cases split. BIG job.
sportyblue 19th June 2006, 09:59 4th.......seems to be the most versatile to me.
MOREHP 19th June 2006, 10:39 5th gear, but I only got a 4 speed....:doh
xtheunknown 19th June 2006, 12:35 I'm very fond of fourth gear. When I'm in the twisties of the New England mountains, fourth gear seems just about right. Not too high where I will stall as I slow down entering the curve, but not too low so that I can roll on the throttle and rocket around the curve at warp speed. Fourth gear is my friend.
ed_in_az 19th June 2006, 20:55 It's probably due to having some empty roads with long straightaways and "free for all" freeway sections, but I like 5th. Just wind it out until self preservation kicks in and then back off.
:tour
avnsteve 20th June 2006, 01:28 I like 5th at about 80-85, the bike sounds happiest there:tour
typerighter 20th June 2006, 05:12 I like 5th at about 80-85, the bike sounds happiest there:tour
We have the same bike. Is yours stock or have you done Stage 1 yet?
RacingJake 23rd June 2006, 01:52 I like them all, banging each one on the rev-limit from a stop until the wind starts lifting my boots off the forward controls.
Jeffytune 23rd June 2006, 06:34 Hi all.
Fourth is the best for twisty riding, it can pull you hard through a turn, and have enough under decell to act like a brake.
edman 23rd June 2006, 11:33 Hi all.
Fourth is the best for twisty riding, it can pull you hard through a turn, and have enough under decell to act like a brake.
I got some twisty roads out here good for first and second only. If you’re in forth it’s not twisty it's the interstate. Maybe the poll should be “what is your favorite RPM”
Jeffytune 24th June 2006, 09:02 Like you Ed, I still have my 883 gearing in her, and it depends on just how much torque you have, and how fast you you are riding.
Yes, we have the one two and three needed ones too.
I think I am running to the coast for the weekend, I just hear those twisters a callin'.
ferreira 29th July 2006, 07:42 I like power shiftin 2nd at 1/3rd throttle and gettin that CHIRP from the rear wheel and then just open her up! (Im gettin all tingly just thinkin bout it)
4banger 3rd August 2006, 19:25 When you first posted this tread I thought what a dumb question, of course top gear where you go the fastest. But I was wrong again, great post.
wagondog 3rd August 2006, 19:52 I like the gear that comes right after 5th, that me and everyone else looks for. Be honest............who doesn't look for 6th gear:tour
Wagondog
TiBaal89 4th August 2006, 01:54 Interesting question...
I had to say 1st... there is no feeling quite like going from still to rev-limiter in a heartbeat! :tour
Clarinetcat 4th August 2006, 02:14 For me, 2nd is where the action is because that is where the adrenaline kicks in... my heart and the V-Twin open up and start pumpin', ready to rip through the gears.
http://69.55.175.34/Images2/adrenaline.gif
WOOOOO-HOOOOO!!!
Prebs 4th August 2006, 02:25 I have no special gear.. LOL I even like it when its not on sitting on the bike in the garage :tour
typerighter 4th August 2006, 02:41 When you first posted this tread I thought what a dumb question, of course top gear where you go the fastest. But I was wrong again, great post.
Thank you.
If you want dumb questions, look at my other posts. I'm lousy with 'em.
:tour
poboy_27 4th August 2006, 03:00 :D Through first and second, my mind is racing. At third, the whole world is opened up. It has so much range. Low for getting ready to pass that geezer, let her rip, going down the on ramp, and you can shift right to fifth entering traffic with ease and confidence. You can safely brake or hammer down for a quick thrill, leavin' em all in your mirror if you can see more than your elbow. Just my $.02.
4banger 4th August 2006, 18:47 Thank you.
If you want dumb questions, look at my other posts. I'm lousy with 'em.
:tour
Your welcome, there are no dumb questions, that was just a figure of speech on my part. Your tread made me look at all the other great reasons I love to ride.
jeff0628 4th August 2006, 20:37 5th gear WOT..... Wishin I had a 6th!
Clarinetcat 4th August 2006, 20:56 Awwwwww, MAN! 2nd is now 4th! Go figure... :doh
trollingforwalleye 7th August 2006, 16:47 I enjoy witchever gear i'm in. Anticipating the next. I even enjoy neutral. Just seeing it sit in the garage starts me going.:tour :tour :tour
Snuffy 13th August 2006, 04:27 Every gear is my favorite because they get me from point A to point B in a hurry
avnsteve 13th August 2006, 13:02 5th...............................................
kmm0000 27th August 2006, 15:44 5th gear WOT
radar 28th August 2006, 00:38 4th for all the hills around here. Gives me good power and a wide speed range, plus it has that wonderful whine, lets me pretend I'm riding a Shovelhead.
Folkie 28th August 2006, 01:38 3rd; that's probably the gear I use most, and certainly where I have most fun.
MDT 30th August 2006, 00:39 Knock on wood, I never missed third gear. I can usually hold it till the other guy gives up. Even at the drags I used to leave it in third gear (I never geared a street bike for the 1/4 mile).
SoonerSporty 26th September 2006, 21:05 I like 1st gear. It wakes up the neighbors.
SS
biknut 26th September 2006, 22:11 My bikes a 4 speed. I like to get in 4th gear as soon as possible, 40 mph, and then I can go any speed up to 120 mph.
Prebs 26th September 2006, 22:33 I'm still looking for 6th, I think I lost it on the highway.....
jockduece 26th September 2006, 22:49 With the new pipes, I love 1st and 2nd the most. You get on it as you start out, then hit 2nd and continue to get on that throttle and it sounds so damn good! Of course 3rd is when you start looking down at the odometer and think oh sh*t, roll off the throttle and the bike gives you that growling noise. Just like a woman not to be able to make up her mind!*** :D
DISCLAIMER:
*** - this statement is said in jest, so please if you are another woman, do not jump my case.;)

Swankster 27th September 2006, 00:50 NEUTRAL & stationary, knowing everyone around is just staring and saying Cooool, Wow! Bitchin............
Yah rite
milmat1 19th November 2006, 17:44 My first gear goes by so fast that i hardly Know it, and its second gear wheelie time !!! Bike revs up fast !!
:smoke
Gyahmers 19th November 2006, 22:14 My first gear will limit @45mph while second only takes me to 60. I'm a second to third gear person and third gear screams to 90. Fourth limits @105 and I haven't gone over 135 in fifth. Got to keep in mind my harley speedo isn't spot on.
I voted 3rd.
Jimbo999 19th November 2006, 22:18 Fourth limits @105
Yup......I have a 1988, 4 speed and 105 MPH was the limit for me.
I cheated with a downhill start, No wind and early morning cold air.
Got there pretty F'n quick !!
Fourcats 19th November 2006, 23:29 Got to go with 3rd...good speed, acceleration and engine load. The same goes for the RK, third is the puller in a "contest". :smoke
hooptygoo 20th November 2006, 03:59 I voted no gear (no favorite), but really I like the in-betweens when I'm upshifting during a super fast knock yer pants off acceleration. I like the exhaust sound between shifts.
hawk mechanic 20th November 2006, 09:23 First is the gear for me. Nothing like pulling off the line like a bat out of hell, even more so now that I got some cams in her:banana
dirtcrab 21st November 2006, 07:46 This poll has no educational purpose at all. I'm just curious.
Mine is third gear. I think at the low RPM range, it's harmonically tuned to my body and mind. :tour
I voted for 4th because you can be lugging around at 35 give the throttle a BIG twist and be at 65 in the blink of an eye. I love the feel of that smooth acceleration! There is a 1/2 mile steep hill just before my house that I cannot resist the "throttle twist" on.
Turbota 21st November 2006, 16:26 I like the 6th gear in my Sporty the most
carl2124 2nd December 2006, 01:37 Ill take the 5 th gear at 75 to 80 mph
racerwill 26th March 2007, 02:48 I take the fifth.......
Ww
SpartanDen 26th March 2007, 03:14 Any that move me forward....
cjburr 26th March 2007, 04:08 5th at 6800rpm ooooooooooooyeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhhh
MacAttack 27th March 2007, 01:33 Second gear. I was always taught not to hammer it in first gear... so it's the first gear I can pin the throttle with (not that I do it that often!)
rokclmb 2nd April 2007, 05:45 Any gear is my favorite....that means I'm out on my bike and riding.
Amen
(Needed 10 letter minimum)
Lunchbox 2nd April 2007, 09:37 Good thread... My favorite is 3rd had a lot of fun in 3rd and it is usually my lucky gear.....
whittlebeast 2nd April 2007, 13:06 2ed is best for crusing in the twisties. Third for the down hill brakes in the action.
AW
Hot Rod Sporty 10th April 2007, 23:56 I said 3rd, because on my '05, that one's like letting go of a rubber band....that's when I'm thinking to myself, "damn this thing is quick!".
sparrow 11th April 2007, 00:13 It must be 6th gear, because I keep trying to shift up to it.
milmat1 11th April 2007, 00:16 .
5th Gear, On the Rev Limiter !!!!
fastlanedude 17th April 2007, 03:45 This poll has no educational purpose at all. I'm just curious.
Mine is third gear. I think at the low RPM range, it's harmonically tuned to my body and mind. :tour
I just love cruising through town, about 45 mph in 5th. Sounds sweet with those Cycle Shacks (Cycle Shacks? what a lousy name. If it were my company, I would call them "Bad Ass Rumble")
dragbike1500 17th April 2007, 04:52 what all this 5th and 6 gear shift? hell I just been going to 4th all this years and stopping. 77 xlch hardtail ,
Folkie 17th April 2007, 07:54 what all this 5th and 6 gear shift? hell I just been going to 4th all this years and stopping. 77 xlch hardtail ,
:roflblack :roflblack :roflblack
samppa 17th April 2007, 08:04 Currently my favorite gear would be the 5th... Since my ironhead only has four and I think fifth would be very nice gear to have.
Notabiker 30th April 2007, 20:10 for 5th, but I really want a 6th....
bigbluebowtie 30th April 2007, 20:57 I voted for third. I really like the way it sounds at 3500 rpm with my hand at about a 1/4 throttle. It sounds just like a mellow machine gun, waiting for a blast off! I can't go past that yet 'cause I only have 200 miles on my conversion, but I am gaining more miles everyday! Man does the new bike (2000 883/1200) have power!
racerwill 14th May 2007, 05:16 third gear for me.... from 2500 RPM to 6000 RPM......
sometimes I change into 3rd, move my feet from the forwards to the "business" pegs , sit up closer to the tank and hold on tight......
Vroom Vroom
Ww
1stGenRex 14th May 2007, 05:17 6th Gear!
Becuase one day I'll finally find it....
enough said
Sportster Sam 15th May 2007, 02:28 My gears are all very special to me and if I picked a favorite, the other 4 would get their little gear feelings hurt and they would whine and I couldn't do that to 'em!
sprtrjl 15th May 2007, 02:32 I'll just say I can't think one I want to lose!
lincoln1975 19th May 2007, 04:31 I dont really have a favorite gear. I love them all. they all pull very nice.
renpia 19th May 2007, 05:03 Third is great for slowing into some curves and then rippin' out of them!
Sleeper 19th May 2007, 05:24 3rd gear on a 360 degree entrance ramp to the Interstate. Accelerating and leaving the tailgaters behind on the banked 360. Than diving in to the cars and SUVs on the interstate like a warrior on the hunt for buffalo.
We don't have winding mountain roads here, so I have to take what I can get. :laugh
Those looking for a 6th gear, here's another (cheaper) option.
www.twistgear.net/page%20html/sportgear.html
I've been busy at work, but hope to make the conversion in the next week or two.

Let us know how the installation goes, costs, and speedo calibration info in a new post. I'm interested!
streetfighter1 27th May 2007, 18:54 5th gear because I'm normally over 100mph when I get there!
ejonny 31st August 2007, 06:48 I voted 2nd, but it's seriously hard to pic a fav. I voted for 2nd only 'cause I'm more inexperienced then the rest of ya and I love the way it surprises me sometimes like, "holy-hell I'm gonna dump ya off the back-side-a this bike if ya don't hang on properly!! :laugh :laugh
Big_Baazzoo 6th October 2007, 02:06 Fifth gear? You guys have 5 gears? Hey! That's not fair!!
findangle 6th October 2007, 02:10 with the steep twisty roads around here i find most of the time 3rd gear really lugs up hills unless im going dangerously fast for the road.. so second is my business gear..
I vote second.
edit: Come to think of it I would have to check the manual to see if I even HAVE a fifth gear.. I've never asked the bike for a fifth gear.. I've never had her over 45mph.. wind sure does start to whoosh at that point though lol..
u8mymeat 7th October 2007, 10:13 I like first, best for smokin the tire. I still try to shift into 6th that is not there when on the highway.
Leumas 7th October 2007, 12:04 ....is a black Leather two piece, open-face helmet (black of course), leather gloves (er, black) and Motocross boots (guess the color?)......
I guess that's not what you meant....Hey Ho! :) Leaumas
unfiguroutable 18th October 2007, 21:53 I like first gear right after i dump the clutch at 6500rpm! Lets race baby
danonator 19th October 2007, 05:49 Third gear is my favorite!
It's the speed range I'm usually in and gives me the torque and response I need.
roadster 20th October 2007, 06:19 I like my pinion gear alot...........
hillers03 20th October 2007, 07:10 I like first gear right after i dump the clutch at 6500rpm! Lets race baby
3RD mine that when I pop it into 4th and am gone like the wind.
Race any time Get some!!:tour :laugh :banadanc
flathead45 17th November 2007, 17:16 reverse, oh wait I like .... umm....
well the gear I like the least is that mystery gear that I keep trying to find after 4th, but it has the same ratio as fourth :smoke
emzdogz 18th November 2007, 15:49 I like 4th at real high rpm and accelerating, like almost hitting the rev limiter. I like 4th just before I stick it in 5th.
Like getting on the slab in 4th and no one is around so you can wind it out real good before switching into 5th.
:)
pleasure!
cbmotorsports 7th June 2008, 15:33 The way mine is geared, third at about 35 the cams and thunderheader sound great. Sorta cracks like a stock car with open headers.
Lenster 7th June 2008, 17:07 I'd have to say it's a toss up between 3rd and 4th around 4K RPM. Depends on the road and traffic conditions.
brado 25th August 2008, 12:08 hitting 70 before you can blink and it's ability to bring your speed back down with control if needed. Also like 4th for passing in traffic running above the 50 mark
Gotta agree!:I agree Nothin like droppin a gear & crackin it back when necessary.
decman 27th August 2008, 14:11 It's 6th gear for me.
MadMax25 28th September 2008, 00:28 I vote for 5th gear.
It means that I'm on the highway... maybe doing about 3,000 RPM.
That comes out to about 60 MPH on my 1200R. Easy cruising...
Doesn't really matter where I'm going... I'm not at work !!! :smoke
blkshark 28th September 2008, 00:53 fourth gear means I'm humming along the high country watching the hawks, lizards, rabbits, roadrunners and cactus roll by at around 50-55 mph...
Ditto, except the countryy's not that high and the part about the roadrunners and cactus!:laugh:laugh
KenaiPenninsulan 6th October 2008, 15:10 4th gear for me at about 45 miles an hour
the sweet spot
not pushing it hard, and being able to enjoy the sights still
