I'd like to add a tach to my '89 883. Anybody got a post or other info?

Bockstoker, it's easy. I have an 87 and did it. Unfortunately, I am heading out the door for 4 days. I will ive you the info when I get back. If I forget, send me a pm. KD

Do you have a specific tach in mind or are you looking for ideas in general?

Chris, Looking for a stock type set up. Can I use my existing speedo? Would not have a problem using another route though.

HD used to sell a tach setup that made the bikes without into the bikes with. Uses the stock speedo, then a new bracket and a tach. 3 wires on the tach, a couple bolts, swap the brackets and indicators, and you're done. I don't know if they offer that any more. I think I have seen people in the forum looking for the old stock of them. Gotta research more.

The one for Bert's bike is different. Electronic speedo (no cable) and different gauges and indicator lights. 1996 and later stuff.

bockstroker: the part number for the HD tach kit that was offered long ago for a 1989 is 67109-86. It is obsolete from HD, but some dealers still have it in stock. You might find one on eBay too. I also posted the instructions for you (http://www.chrishajer.com/bike/XLF/-j00402.pdf). There are lots of other ways to go, too, with a tachometer, but this is the Official(tm) HD(r) way.

Thanks Chris, Now all I need is to find the parts. Might be some after market stuff that will work. Just one of several poss. additions to the scoot.

Ebay has the tach from time to time. The pdf instructions are right on for your bike. Did this cover everything? If not fire away. Need the tach, the new dual gauge holder, and of course the cup (cover) and trim ring for the tach.
The wiring is easy. KD

thanks KD, I'll start the E-bay searches. Have you got any other suggestions, price friendly of course?

You can find deals on ebay. The dual gauge bracket, the tach itself, and the wrinkle finish black cover and the chrome trim ring. Just be patient, keep looking (checking) and a good one will come up. I think there is one on there right now. Just make sure it is for the sporty, as the redline on it is 1000 rpms higher than the tach for the 1340's, but otherwise they are the same.
As a matter of fact, here is one:
Not sure if the dummy lights are the same as your year. Good luck, KD

Just bid on that item! Thanks a lot kd, We'll see how it goes. I won't approach red line any how, I just don't run that hard.
