View Full Version : To stroke, or not to stroke?

I was thinking about putting a stroker kit (S&S) in my '84 Ironhead. I will be riding it reasonably. Is this a good way to go? Or will it stress my engine out?

Hey Fisherman,

Geez, 3 days your post has been here and no replys. I don't have the knowledge or experience to answer but maybe this will bring your post to the attention of someone who does. I would like to hear the answers also.

well fisherman , I was reluctent to answer your question cause I have no facts , but a bro had a 73 with an s&s stroker kit and with a big bore it was around 77ci . we drove the hell out of that motor for at least 3 years with no lower end related misshaps
we did however have to do a topend every year (valves , guides, rings)

but like I said I have no facts as to reliability concerns , talk to a few local engine builders and get there opinion , theyed know better than I do

:drinkbeer The only concerns I've heard on the subject have been regarding the starter. I.E. The stock unit not having enuff balls to crank it over when stroking AND increasing the compression. If yours has a kicker then the question still remains if the starter has enuff balls to git 'er done! :D

Thanks all for your inputs. I've been looking for the 'Big Bore' kit, to no avail. So, I'll stick to the stroker & pretty much stock compression. As to the info from flathead45 about the top end build every year. I guess that you have to pay for what you get. It's like the old hotrod addage, speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?.

as long as your aware of that , dig in and stroke away

nothin' in the world sounds like a sporty stroker , pure power (ironhead of course :laugh )

next time mine goes down under the knife it will prolly get stroked

if you want more inches , stroke it :p

Wahoo. Found a big bore kit. $1200.00 It includes cylinders, pistons, rings & button wrist pin keepers. The stroker kit comes with pistons also. I guess I'll have to get pistons seperately. The ones that come with the stroker kit are too small & the ones that come with the big bore kit are too tall. For sale: 2 brand new piston sets.
Wanted: Good machinist to bore my cases. This is getting expensive. Maybe I should just buy that new Triumph Rocket III I've been looking at. 145 horse, 147ft lbs torque, 2300+ cc's, stock. Hmmmmm A reviewer said it looked like they took an engine out of a caterpillar tractor & bolted a seat & two tires to it. An apt description I think.....

As the infamous Roland Martin would say, "SON"! You've

Further OT - hate that avatar. It really creeps me out - think I need a shower...

Heh - like in Ace Ventura, Pet Detective.

Those Japanese comedians can be pretty far out there, but funny.
