View Full Version : Adjusting my El Paso windshield
tstoeckel 25th June 2006, 03:57 So I have this very nice 19" Memphis Shades El Paso windshield but I find that, at it's highest mounting point, the top of the windshield is about level with my neck. This must be due to being 6'2" largely in the torso. I am getting beaten to death about the head by the wind coming over the top (as opposed to coming up from the bottom). Any tips on adjustments that might help or am I stuck with a nice windshield that just isn't tall enough?
johnnybgood 25th June 2006, 16:55 You could just lean down real far while riding.....just kidding. I'm not sure what you could do. I recently bought a 17" and have it mounted as high as it will go and think I would have been better off with the 19". I'm only 5' 7". Have you considered the HD Quick Release Standard Height? I have one and can barely see over the top. Might work for you if you can stand the looks and cost of it.
Hoowasat 25th June 2006, 17:19 Have you consider those windshield "lip" extensions available online? They're not the most attractive devices around, but they've been mentioned in this forum a few times, so you may wanna' try a search right here.
Detsuh 25th June 2006, 18:33 I had the same problem with that windshield, but for me it wasn't just the buffeting coming over the top, but also from around the bottom. I tried adjusting it a few different ways, some worked better than others, but nothing solved the problem entirely. I eventually gave up and ended up buying a HD touring windshield.
whispanic 25th June 2006, 18:40 Im of the school that feels you dont need to look thru the windshield.
I have the same shade and I look over it with none of the same symptoms you have.
When I added the apes I just moved the windhield out a bit at the mounting point and leaned it a bit more forward at the top.
If the screws are tight it aint going anywhere.
Its takes some tweaking, but you can get it juuuuust right.
Or if you want you can cruise over to my place and I will help you adjust it.
Or get a low profile seat to drop you a bit.
Adios
johnnysquire 27th June 2006, 20:41 I sit tall too (6'0", 31" inseam) and I got the 19" El Paso to work with a fair amount of trial and error on the angle. Some positions were REALLY uncomfortable. I started with the shield leaning way back and took about 4 tries to get the best position.
Bill2 27th June 2006, 20:51 If you ever buy the other style they make (memphis fats or memphis slims) there taller even if the height is listed as the same. I just bought a memphis fats 21" and i'am right at 5'11" and i look through the windsheild and can hardly look over it. A 19" in the fats/slim style would have fit me better, it would have still been about at my forehead. The 21" is about 3 inchs over my head, so think about that if you ever get the fats/slim style.
alexcue 28th June 2006, 00:49 I always thought it was better to look above them and not thru them?

I'am a little late but yea most people would rather look over them. I'll end up trimming mine some. It's not really bad looking through it, i keep a couple coats of wax on it so when i get caught in the rain it just beads off real quick.

If it's only coming up to your neck I'm afraid you've got the wrong shield. I measured the height I needed to come up to my nose before I ordered mine. I don't like looking through any more layers since I already wear prescription glasses and use a face shield on my 3/4 helmet. At nose height I can look over it and still ride helmetless :shhhh when I want to.
CROW 26th July 2006, 19:52 I found that most is from the bottom. I have been playing around with home made lowers made from plexy glass and it has helped a lot. I am also thinking about making a one piece item that will go under my headlight and also act as my lowers them paint the back side black to match my gradiant black Memphis Shades Rio Grande.
greanmeany1 26th July 2006, 20:34 My 19 Inch El Paso Works Fine Over The Top, I Am 6-1. But It Pushes All The Wind To The Side And Now My Arms Get A Lot Of Blast. I Took It Off For The Summer. This Fall It Is Going Back On.
My Hd 3/4 Helmet And Snap On Hd Flat Visor Work So Well I Really Dont Need The Windshield Even At 75 Mph, Love It. It Took Me 5 Helmets To Find The Right One.
