Pipes where a bit rusty from sitting, so replaced them with some Samson Slashers. I was wanting to do an old school chopper look so installed the chopperkit. The more I looked at it the more Old school and Evo didn't sit right in the pit of my gut.

This was my thinking process for the tins: I had to replace the license plate mount (rust). My solution... go side mount and clean up the fender. A Jesse James Tombstone fender (after allot of hammering/cutting) fit the bill for that idea. Now the tank looked out of place with the wider looking fender.. CC stretch tank was added to the list. Ok... the front fender just had to go now. I remembered my indy picked up a few fender blanks at a swap meet last year. Picked up the blank with a few cases of beer and started cutting... Tins finished...

The paint... Had to be something bright... and I always wanted to do a Candy Red Metal Flake job. Painted the tins in HOK Orion silver then laid 3 coats of Silver MF (Light mix) with 8 coats of Candy Red over that. The flames are painted with a very heavy mix of Silver MF (3X the recommended amount), then pinstriped in black.

Excellent Job! I am not a fan of the chopper kit on stock sportsters
(your 1st photo is the reason why) but your choice of tank and front fender make all the difference in the world! How does it handle now??

That is one seriously badass looking bike. That front fender looks dangerously close to draggin' on the ground. Nice job.

hmmmm, silver metalflake flames , were have I seen that before......

oh ya , on my bike , yep I woke up from a dead sleep and said " silver metalflake flames on a black base coat " , gave the idea to my painter and this is what I got back
http://xlforum.net/photopost/data/2/16IMAG0005_JPG_1.jpg

he sprayed the flake from the rear of the tank to give it a flake fade from front to rear (heavyer flake at the flame tips) so it looks like black flames fading to flake

looks good in red too , love the bike , you did a great job

Ya, Silver Metal Flake over black was my first and backup choice... I did the candy red mainly cause... 1. I never painted candy before and had to see if I had it in me... and 2. I always wanted a candy red paint job. I think I could have used a few more coats of the red to darken it up a bit, but was worried about covering up the metal flake too much.

A really cool effect that I almost went to was to add the metal flake directly to the candy every 2-3 coats.

My camera was left in the paint shop one too many times so the pics are not the greatest... but here is a shot of the tank just before pinstiping.

Mickes...did you put the flake in the candy?? Where did you get you supplys.

I have been thining about Alsa Corp. Useing a metal flake base, then using their crystal masking (it creates cool crystal like structures), then putting on a candy. Looking some something different. I really like you color scheme

I put 3 coats of MF down then painted the candy over it. I used House of Kolor paints... http://www.hokpaint.com

Putting the MF in the candy (every 2-3 coats) created different shades of MF which looked kool, but, the last layer of MF will be too silver and clash with the flames... If added more coats of candy to cover the silver, the first coat of MF would start turning black.

Just checked out the Alsa Corp web sight... looks like some kool effects.
