I have been haveing a problem with my 2005 883 with a stage 1. I have about 3000 miles and the bike has run great! Now, all of a sudden, the bike has been caughing( carb fart) all the time!. It happens when pulling out, cruising, hot and cold. Also, it has benn popping a lot when letting off the gas.

Not sure where to start? Plugs? carb? The problem does seem to go away if I pull the choke out a little. I just do not underatnd how the bike could run so well one day, and so lousy the next?? Its like someone was messing with my carb without me knowing:gun

Help!

Intake seal leak.

Yeah that sure sounds just what would do that, run good for 3000 miles then get a air leak then your convensateing by choking it to add more gas with the more air your getting from the intake leak.

Is there a good HOW TO on how to check for intake leaks? I looked through the stickies, but I didn't see one. There are lots of posts, but I lost track of the good ones. It's such a common problem, there should be a sticky.

Thanks. I would like to see a quick test too. What should I expect when changing the seal?

It seems like this type of question comes up often. Has anyone tried putting the original jets back in to see if the problem goes away or at least gets better or worse?. Chances are what ever system was distirbed that's the system to go after first to find the problem.

After 40 years in the aircraft maintenence business I sometimes ask the aircraft owner "What was wrong with it before you tried to fix it" Then I ask "what all did you take apart" and after I go over what ever they tried to do or got out of adjustment the original " bad" problem then becomes and easy fix

If you let 'er idle and direct the spray up around the manifold you'll get an increase in RPM if she sucks some in. It worked on my old Yam.

Good luck!

Not sure if this would help. I did the stage one at mile 100 and got 2900 trouble free miles. I doubt the conversion caused the problem. I would be more inclined to this that the stupid ham can hitting my knee jarred the gasket somehow

I also just read that 10% ethanol gas can eat away at the rubber diaphram in a CV carb! Not sure if I have been pumping that or not. If the wd-40 test fails...I know where to go.....nothing can be easy!

I've never seen a slide diaphragm get eaten by anything. There's not even any gas up there. Is that the diaphragm you're referring to?

The diaphragm is not your problem. Check for an intake seal leak.

Spraying the intake will take leaks there out of the diagnostic loop but ONLY if spray doesn't get into the carb.

That's no Sporty. That's an Evo Bagger. Not sure the year ('95 and later based on the left flywheel teeth?) I emailed someone about using that picture, not sure who, and was looking for the whole story.

Let's not jack dmraco's thread though. I can start a new thread if anyone wants to send me blown up motor pictures and stories :)
