tcspannerwrench 3rd July 2006, 21:15 I respect Evil a lot myself having watched as a wide-eyed kid every time he was on TV even had the “Wheelie Bike”
I think on the documentaries he is portrayed as an ass by modern standers but I always took it as part of his showmanship, he was the best self promoter of his time.

ocndaf 3rd July 2006, 23:22 Back then he was the Jordan of his day. No one was bigger, he is one of the few mega stars that can be called by their first name and everybody knows who you are talking about. I owe a lot to him ( alot of boken bones an stitches trying to be like him) he is the reason I rode wheelies and jumped jumps when I was young I should have payed more attention to the missed landings. But boy did I want to be Evel, just like the kids in that like Mike commercial

One of the reasons for everyone being able to know who he is by is first name is that its not exactly a common name, how many people have you met named Evel, right now i'm at 0 and know of 1. not trying to take away from his fame or anything, but if all stars had such unique names it would be easy to identify them by their first name.
Edit-and ive seen interviews with him and he seems like a real dick... making comments like "If i had the kind of bikes these kids have, i woulda been able to do ten times what they can" which just seems like an incredible amount of disrespect for those who do now what he did when he was young.

If you would have been around when he was in his prime you would understand.
Roadster_Rider 3rd July 2006, 23:38 I understand, but if someone referred to Tiger you automattically think tiger woods right? but say if someone said Michael you dont instantly think Michael jordan, because of how common the name is.

Boy you are talking threw your a$$ and commenting on things you know nothing about. If you were dry behind your ears you would realize that he is not being a dick, he did his jumps with pretty much the same bike you scoot around on, not the super motocross bikes they have today. Nothing like them existed back then, even the motocross bikes where heavy tanks back then, It has taken guys on the new superbikes to meet and exceed what he accomplished and as far as names go, everybody knew who Knievel was and they weren't thinking about Robbie.
Roadster_Rider 4th July 2006, 00:11 Boy?
Listen old man, i'm sure all of the stunt riders of today have respect for evel, and i just think he owes them the same.
Johnny G 4th July 2006, 00:13 It was Man and Machine back then now days its Machine and Man with the big percent going to the machine . Try jumping with 6" suspension and hope you can still talk like a man after landing. Hats off to Evil he was by far the 1st nutcase on earth.

Roadster_Rider 4th July 2006, 00:35 Ever been to a FMX event? They do some pretty !!!!!ing crazy stuff, and when they go down, they get back up and get back on just as he did, theres no reason why he shouldnt show respect for these people.
birdmove 4th July 2006, 00:43 I saw him jump a mess of busses at SIR (Seattle Int Raceways) back about 1970-71. They had the ramps set up at the side of the track in the dirt. He did the jump, but came down on the very edge of the landing ramp and hit the rear wheel, bending the hell out of the wheel. He had to fight to hang on and hold the bike up. He then announced he was not happy with the jump, and had everything moved onto the pavement, He redid the jump, nailing it this time.He was bareley able to walk after the misshap of his first jump, but still went ahead and redid it.He didn't have to.He could have collected his money and went home. Like him or hate him, this man has balls of steel.

It doesnt matter, does it hurt less if you go down on a motocross bike than on a sportster? The guys who do these stunts go down in competition, and while learning to do them, and there more pain there than there ever will be from bottoming out.

H34TH3N 4th July 2006, 02:13 I think Evel had some major balls....jumping an xr750 in the manner that he did for so many years and surviving is no small feat. I loved watching him as a kid, and used to set up garbage cans in the street to jump on my bmx bike trying to be like him. The problem is, as we grow up[or at least some of us do], we learn from interviews and reading that evel, well, evel is a class A assclown.:smoke He's an arrogant, alchoholic, wife abusing piece of crapola. Wasnt really that great to his freeloading off his name choad of a son who cant jump to save his own ass either...lol. So Ya, i have major respect for a guy who can jump a 70's era xr750...i also have massive respect for a guy who can take one look at a 200 foot plus dirt gap and just hit it clean first run...no fanfare...no faggy cape. Then on the next run maybe he'll backflip the same gap...its insane. They are both pioneers of different era's....both deserve some respect and some awe. They do amazing things for little or no money. And yet,,,,i have to watch a convict throw a ball thru a net on tv for several million a year.....lol...go figure...

I make no claims toward knowing everything, or even very much for that matter, but as i said before, and as H34TH3N said, Evel did do amazing things, BUT he shows no respect to any of the stunt riders today, and is an arrogant alchoholic asshole. But I wonder if they would have the balls to duplicate the things Evel did back in the '70's.

He may be an abusive arrogant alchoholic asshole, there are plenty in life and god knows you'll find more than your share when go to a bar where the lot is full of motorcycles. But that is the way life is, and the guys I know that have looked death in the eyes have some ruff edges so to speak. I don't ever remember him claiming to be a choirboy. He blazed a path were no one had gone before, facing death with arrogance that only a true hero could. Was he a rebel yes, was he someone you want to see you sister with, no. But he was "real" at a time when America needed someone that was real. By the time he came on the scene in the late 60s and early 70s we had figured out that John Wayne wasn't real. It was a different time that you had to live in to understand and to have a hero that faced death and spit in its eye gave great comfort to a generation. It was no accident that his leathers were the color of the flag or that he wouldn't ride an Asian bike. He did things that were never done before when you grow older you'll realize that doing things second is not nearly as hard. And because you and others can't see that does not make it untrue.
Desertfox 4th July 2006, 15:55 If you would have been around when he was in his prime you would understand.
Amen brother! He did more to promote not only himself of course but the sport of motorcycling in general than anyone of the era. When Harleys had the reputation of being rolling junk, and organizations like MAN motorcyclist against noise (WTF is THAT about?) were gaining face time on tv, he single handedly brought American style bravado and panache back to the sport. He made H-D all American bike again, dispite the torrent of high performing utterly reliable Japanese bikes then just starting to conquer the American market. We ,as Sportster enthusiast especially , and H-D riders in general owe him a debt of gratitude and respect. Was he a perfect human being? Who among us is?
lagerdrinker 4th July 2006, 16:10 Evel did do amazing things, BUT he shows no respect to any of the stunt riders today, and is an arrogant alchoholic asshole.
so, whats the problem? i dont think he ever got the respect he truelly deserved. he's old, let him say what he wants. he's the guy who makes harleys look cool, not the other way around.

Johnny G 4th July 2006, 16:45 Kind of like comparing your basic fighter jet pilot to the wright Bros. I think modern day technologies have made heroes out of a lot of people , but its the pioneers that deserve all the respect for the craftsmanship and balls it took to come up with some of these crazy ideas. Evel gets my respect.

As for sticking to my guns, ive never backed down and never will on anything i say.
Read this from the beginning, and you all will see that i have said the same thing that other people have said, the beginning post said he was an ass. My age seems to be the only reason for my back having a huge target on it.
And as for working 35 years, i have not worked 35 years, but i install carpet and work for a fireplace manufacturing company, ive got back and knee problems at 16 years old, if anyone wants to tell me i havent worked my ass off, well you can just go !!!!! yourself.

Don't reckon I ever remember respect being earned without first being demanded can't remember a football coach, teacher, drill sargent, or hell even the old man ever getting respect without demanding it and backing it up too. Online it easy to be disrespectful, but sitting in a room with these old crusty farts I suspect there would be alot more respect being doled out. As for the smart mouthed kid whose mommy rides to school with him, with a mouth like his I suspect he'll learn how respect is earned sooner than later. Just read the threads always a smart a$$ remark, take up for him if you want but he'll end up either learning respect or earning it the old fashion way..

Gettin a little hot in here...

Interesting, no?
Evel is a drunken arrogant a**hole- correct
Evel blazed the trail for the guys in the motorcycle stunting world- also correct

I cant remember a f'n football coach , or a teacher, that ever diserved respect......demand all you want....beat on someone all you want...in the end...your still just a mouth screaming for "respect" that you cant earn...if you think "backing it up" means you can kick someones ass, and that will get you respect?...lol that's some funny shit right there....thats my take....nothing personal on anyone....but i dont respect anything or anyone that thinks i owe it to them...

post 20 he called evel the way he saw him...post 24 you made an attack on RR.
scuse me but you showed first sign of disrespect to him by calling him boy and whatnot.
and yes, respect is earned. i dont think you earned his by calling him boy and saying you saw things he wishes he could.
just my observation.
i think evel is pretty cool, i had the motorcycle and zipstrip launcher.
Kentucky 4th July 2006, 23:06 I was a teenager when Bobby Knievel was doing his thing and I actually saw him jump at the old Ontario Speedway in SoCal. The bike he used was far removed from the bike we rode then or now for that matter and what he did with the tricked out XR750 was awesome. One thing that always got me was why he chose to use the Triumph 650tt for the jump at the palace where he got hammered. As a showman he had no equal and he did more to promote our sport than anyone of the time however, as a citizen he has some serious shortcomings. Having said this, he truly deserves to be in any motorcycle Hall of fame....

You are right about post 24 but you need to reread post 20 where he was lecturing me about Evel's name and his popularity. And I stand by my statement that he was commenting on things he knows nothing about. In post 19 I made a statement about something that I observed and know to be a fact and I will not be taken to task about that statement from someone who was not alive and would not be alive for the next 20 years. When he asked me how many people I knew that was named Evel and chalked up a 0 & a 1 is where the rub came. I was alive and very aware when Evel jumped in the late 60s and 70s I know what I saw and what I knew to be the facts at that time.

I saw an interview in which Evel stated that he -preferred- the Triumph for his jumps. The Harley, he said, had 'too much torque' and a tendency to twist sideways in flight.
The reason he switched to HD? Money, of course. Harley offered him more than the ailing British company was willing to match.
saltman241 4th July 2006, 23:44 Wow nothing like picking on some kid cause he thinks your idol is a washed up drunken old hack. Which in my opinion he is. Did you see Metzger do that fountain jump? He threw a back flip over the foutains and made it a snoozefest. Better equipment well sure. Did he then start talking shit about Evil and his washed up drunken ass? No of course not the whole show paid tribute to them and there attempts. Funny I don't see Arnold Palmer, or the Jack, berating what Tiger or Phil does these days simply because they have better equipment. OCNDAF your a disgrace to everything this forum is. This is by far the worst thread I've seen on here and we owe it all to you and your attacks on a 16yr old kid who works two jobs to afford the same steel we all ride every day. Sorry it took you 36yrs to get your's. But that green shade of envy you've got for this kid makes me wanna :headbang YOU my friend need to grow up.
Roadster_Rider 5th July 2006, 00:11 thank you to everyone who took the time to see my point of view, and not just continuing the flaming against me.
ocndaf, i understand that you do not want to see your childhood idol as being an imperfect human. and I will hold no ill will toward you. As for the comment about me riding with my "mommy" by any chance did you ride with your father? or would you put someone down who did? i dont know my father, and never have, i have my mother to ride with, and i am happy to ride with her.

Sportster Girl 5th July 2006, 00:33 Ah geez, come in from a ride and see all this.
Let's play nice from now on guys.....please.
obinella 5th July 2006, 01:04 gonna have to side with RR on this one and i'm probably older than both of ya put together. my wife is a cousin to evel and she is nuts two. what the hell is it with old people? the older they get the smarter they think they are. i'm baby siting my 89 year old FIL and he thinks he's smarter than Einstein. has an answer for everything. old people suk! and evel is an asshole! yeah, he was a hero of mine also, but that doesn't blind me to his character RR is entitled to his opinion without old ass bites coming down on him, he was not unreasonable in his views.
Not Too Sporty 5th July 2006, 01:13 Let's see, RR works his ass off at 16 years old and when he had the bucks for a Gixxer, he bought a Sportster?
TOMGRUNT 5th July 2006, 01:14 Different opinions are one thing,.... but this thread sucks.:frownthre

Roadster_Rider 5th July 2006, 01:26 I rated it terrible myself, use the rating system, then it warns others of what this contains.
Kentucky 5th July 2006, 02:14 Read this from the beginning, and you all will see that i have said the same thing that other people have said, the beginning post said he was an ass. My age seems to be the only reason for my back having a huge target on it.
Your age in some mind sets would bring people to turn a deaf ear. I have never felt this way because age is a relative factor and often overlooked when an intelligent point of view is expressed. It's not what the young individual says so much as how that individual says it. Male or female, young or old, it's the mind behind the thought that gains my attention and respect. Your thoughts are well expressed and to many, including myself, right on. Based on what I have read in this thread you have done well. However, you make a young ones mistake in being sucked into the expressions of individuals that are clearly designed to agrivate. Don't be misdirected by those expressions or move to their level and you will do fine.....
Roadster_Rider 5th July 2006, 02:31 Kentucky, yes i know i have a tendency to get sucked into arguments... ive got a short fuse, and i'll be the first to admit it, i try my best to control it, maybe that does have to do with being young, but i dont really know.
And thanks for not turning a "deaf ear" to me.
greanmeany1 5th July 2006, 16:57 im 59 my heros when i was young were ALWAYS good guys, they stood for good things. maybe in their real lives they were flawed.
that was the mentality then.
today it is dennis rodman types, gangsta rap etc. get away with something and you are cool.

the world has changed and not for the better.

sex for most of us was maybe getting a feel:banana on a date.
sports and fast cars ruled the day. i loved that life i was lucky enough to have it. i would not trade it for what the kids have today. i bet i enjoyed my feel up more than the young folks get out of a [rainbow party].
ocndaf 5th July 2006, 19:34 thank you to everyone who took the time to see my point of view, and not just continuing the flaming against me.
ocndaf, i understand that you do not want to see your childhood idol as being an imperfect human. and I will hold no ill will toward you. As for the comment about me riding with my "mommy" by any chance did you ride with your father? or would you put someone down who did? i dont know my father, and never have, i have my mother to ride with, and i am happy to ride with her.
It has nothing to do with my childhood idol. My first post was a statement plain and simple didn't expect anyone to agree, I really could care less if his wife and kids like him. He did what he did and no slant chanes that. Maybe the whole thing boils down to my lack of internet knowlege. My understanding is that if you quote someone you are talking directly to that person. My take is that I was being lectured about things that I know to be fact. If I am wrong or that was not your intent then I too am an imperfect human, but I am man, and I am man enough to appoligize. Things got way too personal and for that I do appoligize.
greanmeany1 5th July 2006, 20:41 Keep doin what yer doin Roadster rider....you have it right in my opinion....Evel Was a pioneer....had big balls, and i respect what he has done.....but i have NO respect for a belligerent drunk asshole...which he is.And as far as some of these old crusty farts on here...you owe them NOTHING.. respect is earned...not given...dont ever pass out respect to some asshole just cause he's old and went to work for 35 years and thinks the world owes him two shits. Stick to your guns kid...And remember....you're arguing with a bunch of guys who ride antiquated, overweight, leaky slow bikes......and are proud of it... :D :D
Happy fourth Kid.....i hope you have a good one....:smoke
how dare you insult my bike. you mean they make faster bikes than my sporty:whisper
roadster rider you are ok in my book. i was soooooo stupid at 16, now that i am 59 i am just slightly smarter . i think you handled us old farts pretty good. hang in their.:tour
Lucifer 5th July 2006, 20:53 Still have my autographed Evel picture from my childhood on my current bookshelf. Back when he did what he did for the money, there were none better or any even close for that matter (most died trying). I am also old enough to remember live footage long before paid preview. He definately had the biggest balls of them all or at least of those who survived. No doubt! We never got much of the tabloid asshole coverage stuff until he beat up the author of his book. He also pulled his time and would do it again (beat the crap out of the author), right now! Ya gotta respect the way he handled his business whether ya agree with it or not. He didn't need any help. Ever see where he grew up? Definately the land of opportunity. Ya can also bad mouth Robbie, but he can ride, heck he could ride better than most when he was just a child. As for the new guys, the ones makin the money are the best, it's just already been done for the most part. The true pioneer Evel was! Makes ya want to put on your roller blades and be pulled behind one of them Hyabusa's though the 1/4 mile with nothin but a rope to hold on to! Would that be showmanship or stupidity or both? Evel sure made the money and the show always went on! Shows what a few ludes and some booze can do for saying yes to the no answer! I went 33 feet on my Raleigh 3 speed Sting Ray off a 6 ft embankment way back when (early 70's). Don't think any of the other kids even came close. Still got the bike at my parents house and the rear wheel sure stayed bent most the time. Thanks for the memories!
Dave
Ride to Live!
greanmeany1 5th July 2006, 21:14 one of the things i respect him for is he had to know it was going to cost him his freedom and a lot of money to beat on that guy that said that stuff in the book. he did it and i respect him for it. he never made excuses in court ,just took it like a man. that is in short supply today.
Sportster Girl 5th July 2006, 21:25 ASSOCIATED PRESS
CLEARWATER - Evel Knievel, '70s cultural icon and poster boy for fast
living and derring-do, has trouble now just walking from his Clearwater
condo to the pool.
His 67-year-old body broken by years of spectacular crashes and ravaged
by a multitude of serious ailments, the king of the daredevils can
hardly get out of bed most days, let alone straddle a Harley.
On bad days, Knievel wishes he had gone into another line of work. On
better days, he doesn't regret a minute. Lung disease sometimes makes
it hard for him to talk, but his stories still drip with swagger. He
can be kind and gracious one minute, irascible and profane the next.
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition, is scarring and
hardening his lungs. He's recovering from a stroke and has diabetes.
He's broken about 40 bones, is full of plates and titanium parts and is
constantly in pain. Repeated concussions have affected his short-term
memory.
The man who survived 300 perilous motorcycle jumps and once climbed
into a rocket-powered cycle to fly over a canyon, now stays close to an
oxygen tank, ingests 50 pills a day and sucks on lollipops that deliver
fentanyl, a heavy-duty painkiller.
"People think I've been through something in my life from what they've
seen on national television, my accident at Caesar's Palace for
instance," Knievel says. "Look at what the hell I'm going through now.
How much can the human body endure?"
Knievel is preparing for his annual summer trip to his hometown of
Butte, Mont., which celebrates his legend every July with the Evel
Knievel Days festival. The event gets larger every year, but for him
the journey gets more difficult.
"Over time his legend has kind of snowballed," says Knievel biographer
Steve Mandich. Other daredevils, including son Robbie, have made longer
jumps, but Knievel was the original article, a brash showman in his
signature red, white-and-blue leathers. Oddly enough, the horrific
crashes, many captured by ABC's "Wide World of Sports" cameras, made
him even more popular.
"He kept jumping longer and longer, and he kept crashing harder and
harder, and he kept getting up and doing more stunts," Mandich says.
Once a carouser of legendary proportions, Knievel slowed down after a
near-fatal bout with Hepatitis C and a 1999 liver transplant. He lives
with his longtime partner, Krystal Kennedy-Knievel, 36, who looks after
him and helps with his business affairs. (They divorced in 2002 but
remain together.)
Roadster_Rider 5th July 2006, 21:35 good article, thanks SG
planb 5th July 2006, 21:37 "I went to Idaho and bought a canyon. It's mine, and I'm going to jump it. The only thing that will get me out of the air is an anti-aircraft gun." Gotta go.... Robert Craig (Evel) Knieval

santansporty 5th July 2006, 23:04 I understand, but if someone referred to Tiger you automattically think tiger woods right? but say if someone said Michael you dont instantly think Michael jordan, because of how common the name is.
WTF? what does it matter if a name is unusual or not? What does that have to do with the original post??? And I DO think Michael Jordan when I hear a reference to a basketball star called Michael... and I think Judy Garland when I hear Judy... and yes Cher is an unusual name, but I think after years of what she has contributed to the music of my generation, I would know who "they" were talking about if her name had been Susie, or Sandy or WHATEVER...
Young or old, some posters simply like to stir the sh*t and it's getting to be a drag and it's also pantywaisted when so many others whitewash the crappers...
How about some moderating going on here....
H34TH3N 5th July 2006, 23:51 I agree...how about some moderating....anyone with a big twin shouldnt be here stirrin up shit....:smoke :D
ocndaf 5th July 2006, 23:56 Wow nothing like picking on some kid cause he thinks your idol is a washed up drunken old hack.
I am going to say this for you to understand This is not about Evel being or not being an idol. My original post was a statement plain and simple I do not care one way or another if anybody agrees with it... when he followed that post with a quote of my post chalked up a 0 & a 1 and said how many do you know that was not a post to the forum but was directed towards me. At the time I took it as a smart a$$ remark directed at me and responded accordingly. I could careless what he rides or how he got it and nobody said that I waited 36 years to get a bike I had a ride as a matter of fact 2 when I got this one. I have since extended my apology and he has read and posted here and not acknowleged it so I guess my first instincts where right. And if anybody fails to see this I am sorry you had to endure it.
Sportster Girl 5th July 2006, 23:59 How about some moderating going on here....

Has more moderation been needed since post #70? Am I missing something here?
I am getting old and do miss things from time to time....
saltman241 6th July 2006, 00:18 Some are a little slow on the draw. Things seem to have worked themselves out. Like they usually tend to do. Can't believe all this rucus over Evil of all things. What ever happened to dino vs. synth, tassels super cool or suck ass, and the such? Think I'll go check out the drag pipe thread NOW there's something to argue about.:smoke
