I asked for a quote on painting a stretched tank, and fenders (bare metal). Solid base color with flames and ghost logos. We'll see what it comes back as.

If anyone has any suggestions for a reputable painter that is reasonable, I'd be interested.

Last year I meet someone that had their bike painted by them... The paint job was Top-Notch! I think he had it painted in Candy Tangerine... something like example 484. The only problem I seen was the flames where so light that I didn't even notice them till the guy pointed out a rock chip and wanted to know if I could touch it up. That was the way he wanted it.. it did look good. :)

I've been talking to them about putting a ghost "Bar & Shield" logo on top of my ghost flames. Their stuff looks top notch to me. Kind of like this:

Got my quote back:

Total cost for the above paint job will run....$1300
Cost also includes all paint and materials
Add $160 if you would like the ghost bar and shield

*Approximate* prices on prepping and bodywork your parts for paint (not included in the above price)
Prices also include materials
Front fender--$50
Rear fender--$80
Tank--$200

So, $1790 for them to paint the bike. Looks like basic gloss black from the local body shop it is.....

Keep an eye on them...I know that after I got my quote, they e-mailed me with a special on a painted set on new tins and I don't think it was that much. Good luck.

Shipped my tank to them today for the ghost logo. I'm hoping to have it back by the ride on April 9th. You can see it there for yourself and post comments.

Just another reason to join the Jersey Sportster Run 2005!!!

I spoke to Scott from customflame.com. Turns out a major driver in the price of my quote was that I was sending him raw aftermarket sheetmetal. The amount of bodywork and prep for raw metal is alot higher than repainting factory HD parts. I assumed the opposite. His flame jobs start at around $1000. (black/blue pearl). If I would have sent him my original parts the cost for my job would be $1300.

His work is really looks top notch. I guess I need to really see how my 180 / stretch tank conversion comes out. If I can pull off my part of the job nice, then his paint would be a great addition.

90% of raw aftermarket sheet metal requires allot of body work to get straight... Time is $$$$. The tanks I've seen from CCI have to be the worst, and the fenders that are welded down the center suck a$$ too.

There are a bunch of guys offering paint jobs on ebay that do good work. I paid 350 for my bike. It looks good not great but it is worth the money and not so expensive that I can't redo it again in a few years. Each of us has dif. expectations. I know a great paint job involves a lot of care and time. Mine is more than I expected but I would have been disappointed if it were a grand. I can't complain and it sure is easy to see my bike now. My tins were raw also and that is why it took a lot longer than I had expected. http://xlforum.net/photopost/data/500/82ralph_a_small.jpg

Well, I broke down and got a $2650 job ordered from them. That includes a 4.5 tank, both fenders, and both sidecovers provided by them. Also includes a $375 airbrushed raven (my daughters name) on the tank. See sample #346 for the paint example, the raven was a pic we sent to be done. Also sent out my A/C and uprights for powder coating. I eagerly await all...

Chuck, shark doc has it. pm him and ask how he likes it. The paint is nice for the money. I think my biggest complaint is that he is slow. I would not use him unless you have extra tins or lots of time. Mine took 6 weeks to get back and shark doc took about 2 months I think. You get what you pay for. I could do better myself but I don't have the time. I will di my next job. Just in no hurry. I am getting a welder and want to do something special. Just not sure what.

Just got my tank back from Scott at customflame.com and all I can say is top notch all the way. All I had them do was to put a "Ghost" Bar&Shield logo on the tank. Then they re-clear coated it. The only problem I'm having is taking a good picture. It's so shinny now that all you get in the pic is reflections of everything that's around it. I honestly just can't seem to be able to get a clear shot of it. I'll post a pic here and you'll see what I mean.

I know they're not the cheapest, but the work is excellent.

This is SO true.........if they just primed and sprayed most of that stuff it would wave back at people as you passed them! I am almost done refinishing my own bike, I do bodywork and airbrushing. Now since I am doing the work I am not cheaping out on prep, labour or paint cuz I'm already saving a ton. I couldn't imagine if I kept track of my hours how much this job would price out to.......but it will be awesome and well worth the effort. In the artwork department I am my own customer this time so I had my idea and basically just transferred that to my sheetmetal. In the case of an airbrush artist doing work for someone else there is a lot of design, rough drafts to show the client for design approval, changes to make to that, plotting and layout of the design, masking and taping, etc etc. Some people change their minds so often you wonder just what the heck they DO want! You do get what you pay for, you can get a quick cheap job or a top notch one. Many airbrush artists don't want their name (and consequently their reputation) on a quickie job, so they refuse to do them. The casual onlooker who sees the mistakes doesn't KNOW it was a rush cheapie job for someone, (and that the guy can usually do much better) and you are judged by your work that's out there. That's why the price quotes are high and they are reluctant to do anything half-a$$-it comes back to bite them when a guy who wants show quality passes them by. I'm starting to do this stuff for others and that's just my .02 cents worth!
