View Full Version : LED Turn Signals and Tail Lamp
bplinson 17th July 2006, 14:40 Has anyone tried these turn signals and tail light? CLICK HERE (http://www.jpcycles.com/productdetail.aspx?PID=382-261)
I have to replace at least one turn signal bulb a month because the pop due to vibration.
$199.00 is kinda high when you figure a replacement bulb is on $.97.
Is there a less expensive LED kit?
chrishajer 17th July 2006, 16:15 You've been a busy boy, Bert.
Try these: they're just LED bulbs, single or dual filament, but they're only $15. I'm sure other distributors have them too. This is just the first source I found.

ZenBiker 17th July 2006, 16:22 I've been looking at these Bert. They're also not cheap but a little better than $199.

Trust me when I say you want a good LED replacement... there are many out there that only have a couple LED's in a cluster or that aren't high quality (bright) ones, and they will not be very visible. I think good LED's are more visible than the regular bulbs and are therefore safer, but bad LED's are much worse than stock bulbs.
bplinson 17th July 2006, 16:22 Thanks! I will order a couple!
sspeer 17th July 2006, 20:01 I've had bad luck in general with LEDs..they just don't have a good spread of light...even the bulbs with leds on the sides. My analogy is trying to find something in the dark with a laser pointer versus a flashlight..the laser may be brighter, but for only a small point
I never could find an acceptable solution for my 98 when I put a smoked lens on it..I think it's more of a reflector issue with a laydown lens. Something changed on the 99s as I see 99-03 listed as separate parts.
Kev M 18th July 2006, 18:05 Yup, do your homework on LEDs...
here's an image I've posted before. This was a test with the current 1157 replacement clusters I'm running instead of the incandescents on the Guzzi.
The difference was enough that I've since added another row of LEDs to the plate bracket. I'm told by my wife (who has the most to loose) that even when riding behind me in bright daylight I'm now good, but before with ONLY these 30 LED clusters it wasn't sufficient if the sun was bright enough or at the right angle).

dmraco 18th July 2006, 18:27 I went to LEDs all around...They ARE MUCH brighter...day and night. I did not use the replacement bulbs. They are cheap, but do not throw much light. I actually purchased the Kuryakyn stuff.

You simply take off the stock lens and remove the bulb. You then insert the Kuryakyn part that screws right into the stock bulb location. With this, you get a nice chrome end cap, a panel on 25-30 LEDS. You can also see them lit up on the side! The whole setup with laydown tailight and turnsiglans cost less than $200. Go to M&M cycles and get 20% off
wakeup 18th July 2006, 21:22 My mechanic, not sure how to refer to him since he works at a dealership, but works on my stuff on his own, said that at the dealership a lot of people come in with LED's and complain that they don't work after a month or so. Has anyone here ran into that problem, because I would also like to run LEDs

No sir, my main tail-light clusters have been in service for a year or so, not a single problem.
The rest of what I just added has only been there a couple thousand miles, but also no problems.
It takes VERY little voltage to power LEDs (one of the benefits and reasons I installed them), so I suspect IF he is seeing problems it has to do with cheap parts or bad installation. And it is PRETTY damn easy to install an LED, so I lean towards the former.

TheTick 18th July 2006, 23:52 Heavy Cycles use to make turn signal replacements, in addition to their tail lights. I spoke with a him last year, and he'll still make them, just not listed on his web site. Not cheap, but nice and bright. He uses much brighter LEDs than Kurklyan does.

I wanted to buy their tail light but for around $225. for the basic one I still cannot get myself to shell out that kind of money for a tail light. I have the kuryakyn laydown LED tail light and it works fine for me. I also have the mini silver bullets from kuryakyn and the run/brake/turn module with hotflash which has all worked good for me so far.
Definetly do your homework on LED's. Don't buy cheap ones off ebay or any other place. They only sell crappy ones that don't get that bright. A good LED will be bright enough to be noticed and will perform much better than the cheap ones will.
Hear are some good resources for LED lighting. This guy does reviews on many different products:
