I searched and didn't find an answer to my specific question, so I'm sorry if I missed it.

I bought the kit to switch the rear turn signals to running lights/brake lights. Now I'm hearing from a bunch of people that once they installed the kit, that the new running lights are so bright that there's not much difference between them and the brake lights. Has anyone installed this kit and had this problem. I just want to know before I open it and can still return it... Thanks guys.

Not sure what kit you bought, but I have the conversion kit that turns the rear t/s into brake lights. When the lights are on, only the tail light is lit. When the brakes are applied, the main brake light comes on and the two t/s units light up. Turn siginals operate as normal.
Did you get the HD kit or something else?

I bought the kit from HD to convert the rear signals to brake lights. But, I added the insides from the front signals, i.e. adds a double filiment bulb. The HD module works as advertised, I now have brake lights and turn signal function. When the brakes are on, all three brake lights are on. Then, if I turn on a signal, that lamp side flashes while the other side burns steady. The signal and brake light functions are wired to the bright element. The rear running light element(s) are wired to the the headlight running light power source at the stock plug. Export models use this pin, domestic models do not. An easily accessed, key on power source.
I now have three tail lamps and three brake lights. Triple redundancy to allow for bulb failures. While I was at it I changed all the turn signal lamps for "long life" 1157 bulbs.

I have the HD Run/Turn/ Brake Conversion Module and I have NOT modified my rear turn signal bulbs/socket so it has but ONE filement. The unit works as advertised :clap I can clearly see the difference from run to brake on my bike. I used to have the HD "Turn/Brake" (only) module and I did like that one a lot. My logic was (and I also read a few studies) that a light coming "On from Off" was more visable then a light going from "Low to High". That is probably true, however, when I installed the extra rear brake stalk LED Run/Brake I shorted out the module(different from the LED System) and had to replace it. I had intended to get the same Brake/Turn but the NEW HD Run/Brake/Turn unit was given to me instead and I did not notice till I had it installed. I've had both and bottom line, I think the :smoke "Run/Brake/Turn":smoke is the better of the two. It give a lot of light to the rear and a  wider  visable pattern (as it is always on) and when you hit the brakes it gives :gun A LOT:gun of light:wonderlan ! Again, I've not changed the sockets or bulbs but to respond to your question the module works for me and I really checked it out, on my bike there really is a clear change from run to brake. I drive into a city hospital from the county late at night. I go through some "party" areas close to when the bars let out so I really want to be seen:eek:  . The added LED brake "Stalk" Run/Brake lights are nice and all but I see a lot more light change in the "Plug-n-Play HD module and my normal turn signals than in the LED (extra Stalk) lights. Mind you with the LED I have 5 (mo' is better) rear lights  but the HD Run/Brake/Turn module is very good:tour:wonderlan :tour on it's own and gives one 3 rear lights

I have this kit and I'm quite pleased with it. Again, this is the kit that turns your rear turn signals into
both running lights and brake lights. For my 2004 sporty, the part # is 69463-06. Be advised this part
number varies depending on the year of your bike.
Rather than go into detail, I made a 47 sec. video clip to show you. In this clip I applied the brakes
several times, then the turn signals, then finally applied the brakes simultaneously with the turn signals.
Hope this helps folks who may be unsure about this kit. The video is only a 2 or 3mb file btw.

Xena,

That looks nice--definately going to do that with mine, brighter is better! How much did that set you back?

I would agree with the logic that the run type system offers a wider field of vision but to that end, it is not as eye catching to the person following the bike as the on off system. I wired a cyclops lamp into my crotch rocket and it sits just above the plate but below the OEM taillamp. It is actually brighter than the factory LED stop/run lamp. In the case of the Harley it goes from 1 to 3 lamps, a big difference and something that really catches the eye. Just going from dim to bright isn't enough for me. The added safety of a dedicated cyclops light has been proven to be very effective hence the reason they are required on all cages.

:wonderlan I agree with you like 100% and that was my logic using a brake light that came ON from OFF, however, having had BOTH the Harley kits on my bike IMHO the added visability of the Run/Brake/Turn is a significant improvement in general and at least from my observation of my bike the brake light is really lots brighter and it's clear that you are making a change. It's a choice for sure OFF to ON or (dedicated brake lights) are excellent that is what I had and had intended to replace but in a normal SNAFU I put on Run/Brake/Turn and after seeing it on my bike :tour decided I liked it better.

Not sure what kit you bought...

I got the HD "RUN/TURN/BRAKE" kit for the 04. It replaces the amber "turn signal only" lights, with red "run all the time" lights that are also now brake lights and STILL turn signals. What I was hearing was that the "all the time" lights were almost as bright and th brake lights and there wasn't much of a noticeable difference. I was wondering if anyone here was seeing that too. But it doesn't sound like it, so I'm just going to go ahead and install it and see for myself. Thanks everyone.

Thanks Xena. I'll have to wait til I get to my other computer to take a look at it. I had the module on my 98 and it worked just fine...

hey guys i was looking at doing something like this for my 06 1200c. Id like to get rid of the the rear bulky light and use the 2 rear side lamps as the functions.

My friends big dog is set up this way except when he hits the brakes they flash 3 times them stay solid but brighter than when on normailly.

is there a kit out there for my 06 custom to make them flash like the big dogs?

I've got one of the turn/brake modules for 04-06 that I'll be putting in the classifieds pretty quick if some one is interested send me a PM. I was going to ask 25.00 shipped. It is HD p/n 68286-04. The red lenses have never been used as I have smoked lenses with red bulbs but I did try the module. I decided to go with a programmable tail light setup that has turn signals built in so won't need this one.
