After 42000miles riding my 96'sporty it lost the 4th gear. When I shift from the 3th to the 4th, I'm in neutral, after shifting again, I'm in the 5th. My local dealer told me, that he never saw a trouble like this.
Am'I really the one and only sporty rider with that problem? Are there any speculation where the 4th gear is gone?:dunno

Sounds like the dogs are worn on the gears inside the transmission causing them not to engage. Can be a problem with the shift mechanism too, but that's in the trans also. First, you have to rule everything else out (primary chain and drive, clutch, rear belt, rear pulleys) and if that's all OK, then you have to go into the trans.

could be either the fork or the gear since fouth is the only one that is alone in the tranny the other four are paired up 1-2, 3-5 might just be the fork pin. cross your fingers and good luck with that.
