View Full Version : no head light or flashing, are there fuses in a sporty?

I was installing a set of hard saddle bags and had the turn signals off off the bike. I went to turn on the lights to take a look at something and one of the turn signal's wires were crossed and all of a sudden my headlight and all my turn signals went out. I don't know if it blew a fuse or what. I searched the bike all day and could never find a fuse box. I pulled out the HD "running lights/brake-light flasher" circuit and the blinkers will turn on when triggered, but will not flash, and the head light still doesn't work. I tried a couple different bulbs, and even checked it with a mulitmeter, and there's no power getting to the harness. I know there is a grey box mounted to the rear fender that when it is unplugged, none of the lights on the bike will work, but I don't know of a way to get it open to see if anything blew.

When I have the brake-light flasher circuit plugged in, the brake light won't work, but the blinkers will flash, but when the right one is on, the left still blinks a little and same for the other way. When a blinker is on, the brake light will light up when the brake is applied, but it blinks with the other lights (which is not normal).

No matter anything I have done, the head light still doesn't work. Harley doesn't open until Tuesday, and if I can find a fuse or something to replace without having to pay a fortune for them to fix it, I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

Rubber mounts have a fuse block located behind the battery cover.

On your 99, the fuse block in in the triangle shapede cover behind your battery. PUll that out and then pull out the four fuse block....2 minutes and I'll take a picture. BRB

Sounds like you blew a fuse. I'm not sure on a '99, but on my '03 the fuses are behind the triangular panel just to the rear of the battery. Pull the panel off, you don't need to take the screws out it just pulls off. Then if the fuses are in there, there will be a large chunk of plastic with a bunch of wires going into it. The fuses are burried inside that. There's a plastic tab that you have to press in and then the fuse block assembly will slide out. It takes four standard 15 amp spade type fuses like the kind in a car. Headlight and taillight share one fuse, turn signals are on another fuse.

I have an 01 and my fuses are stuffed up there above the battery kind of behind the battery cover I guess. Maybe they are suppose to be in that triangle shaped thing but they are not. Look around you'll find them.

Are the fuses the "mini" type spade fuses, or the full size? (Obviously, I've never seen mine either).

They are the "mini" style. There should be a spare fuse there (a gift from the factory) along with a plastic fuse puller.

Fuses can be purchased in most automotive sections. I got mine from Target.

Replace yours with the spare, get everything normal and then take the blown fuse with you to the store and buy some more. It's quick and easy.
