I have an 87 883 with a 3.3 gallon tank. I am considering putting a peanut tank back on it and I need to know what year tanks will fit my bike.

Any peanut tank for '82-'03 should work without problems. The petcocks on the pre '95 (?) were all on the right side, those later on the left side. Thats the only difference. My guess is that your 3.3 gallon tank's petcock is on the left side which is not stock for your year. As you can see it's easy to use either one. Just have to run the gas line a little different.

I thought the 3.3 gallon tank WAS the peanut tank.

The petcock on my current tank is on the left side next to the ignition switch. I thought the capacity was 3.3 gallons, but not positive. The tank has two caps, one is a dummy. Thanks for the info.

If you want a real harley peanut tank get one from a 1996 sporster its the last year they came from the factory. I got mine on EBAY for about $100.00.

Maybe he's thinking of the 2.2 or 2 gallon tank from the 70s?

The 2.2 gallon peanut tank came stock on his sportster just as it did on my 1993 sportster.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. Every picture I've seen of the 2.2 has been from the 70s.

I was thinking instead of calling it a 2.2 gallon tank, Now you can call it a TEN DOLLAR tank

nh roads
17th October 2008, 20:08
I don't really know why you'd call it a TEN DOLLAR tank?
Here's a 3.3 gallon tank.
I think these are called peanut tanks too.

Maybe its just me, but I prefer the look of the 3.3. The 2.2 just looks way to small.

I like them both, and the extra range is great with the larger tank.
I like little one's older look and seeing the frame and rear cylinder when I'm riding.
The black bike with the small tank gives the illusion of being lighter.
It "feels" lighter and smaller when I'm riding.

10 dollars worth of gas, DuhHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Ha! yep, now I get it!
Just a few years ago it was always $2.00 with the little tank!

technically, the 2.2 gal tank was known as the peanut tank, and the 3.3 gal was known as the 'king' tank.

From people ive talked to the 3.3 is still the king tank and the 2.2 is the peanut. I am hopeing to get a 3.3 cause i keep running out of gas on my 2.2

What would it be called for the Nightster and rubbermount 883 low, as opposed to the new custom tank?

Only a real Sportster Enthusiast would've even known that..:clap

I always thought the king tank referred to aftermarket peanut tanks 3.3 or 3.5 gallons bought to replace the 2.2 gallon stock Sportster tank.

I didn't know the 3.3 gallon tanks Harley started putting on Sportsters were called king tanks.

My buddies ironhead has the aftermarket 3.5 gallon king tank I mentioned.
It's about the same shape as the 2.2, but it's wider.

The 2.2 gallon peanut tank IS the original XLCH Sportster tank and became the standard tank for three and half decades until H-D changed to the 3.3.

The King tank was offered for years and was the same length as the 2.2 peanut, but was wider and offered 3.1 gallons. Harley made for 1996 a 3.3 gallon tank in similar shape to the 2.2 but wider and longer and rounder on the under side. I like all the peanut style tanks, but prefer the original look of the 2.2.

Right, so the Nightster and the 883 low are the last production harley's carrying the peanut tank.
That's how I see it.

And to confuse matters even more, Moco offered a 3.2 gallon peanut style tank as an add on right around 1990 ish. Petcock was on the same side as the 2.2 (right), had a flat bottom (just like the 2.2). Was a little fatter, a little longer, a little taller. Bottom edge was not rolled like the 3.3.

It was available in solid black with a red pinstripe (or other colors special order) and had the "harley-davidson" decal/logo in script form. Was available in their catalog for about 4 years. Used same mounting points as the stock tanks. KD

Hell if I can find a good tank if you pay shipping ill send it to ya.

.

How's about one of them 14 gallon aluminum
tanks they make for boats. It'd probably be a
bit on the big side, but I bet it'd polish up real pretty.
Might have to get one of them cute little pull-behind
rigs...

(My ass don't get sore, I gotta' stop every 65-85
miles for gas...)

2.25 gal tank all the way!

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c237/rotcorp52/P1000133.jpg

Actually, the "peanut" is a custom tank, like on Billy's bike in Easy Rider. The 2.25 Sportster tank is......the Sportster tank. The tank used on the Nightster has sort of the same shape as the old Sporty tank, but sits too high on the frame. To me, it looks like a bad Asian copy you'd see on a Madura or something....:p

Nice looking bike!
I like it with the fork boots, and that's a great old classic tank!

I saw some real cool looking Kegs at H.E.B. I was thinking of using 3 of them as gas tanks and putting a sight gauge on all 3, might make for a better gas mileage. :D I do roughly 150MPG, my buddys nightster has to stop a good ways befor I do.

I bought my '97 with the 2.2 peanut tank. Although I bought the bike used, there is no evidence of the tank ever being changed. The petcock is on the left.
