View Full Version : So These Oil Filters Are All OK To Use?

I'm still struggling to be sure I cover all the bases prior to doing the 1200 conversion at the end of the week. There are no HD dealers close by and I know I'll be needing oil filters for breakin changing. I'm tired of ordering stuff and would like to be able to purchase some filters locally. I've found the following oil filter list from the forum here:

http://www.sportster.org/tech/oil_filter_cross_reference.html

Assuming I can find something off this list at a local auto parts store are they safe for my Sporty? I would hope to at least find Fram, NAPA, and Motorcraft locally. Do they provide the required anti-drain back feature and approx 30 micron filtering? That is to say they don't filter too finely.

I'm also getting paranoid about the synthetic currently in my motor.:o

The problem with the car filters on a bike is that you can see them. Car filters usually have writing on them and they are weird colors unlike the Harley ones. IMO, it is worth the time to order the ones from HD because they look a lot better and you know they work well. Just my 3 cents. :)

Oh, and 30 microns is ridiculously small and it is pointless to filter such small particles.

Since this is for breakin miles only looks really isn't an issue to me. Maybe a black marker would take care of the lettering.

As I understand it, 30 microns is the preferred filtering size due to the XL having a low pressure oil pump.

Does anybody use one of these Fram, NAPA, or Motorcraft filters?:dunno

Anybody?:banasad

I use an ST-3600. It is a black Wal-Mart filter. The base is the same as the Harley filter I took off. It is a little longer. Very easy to remove. The only writing on it is a sticker.

I have had good luck with it.

I use a Super Tech FL1A equivalent, but my bike only has 50,000 mellow, easy miles on it...:roflblack

Thanks guys!:clap

We've got Wal-Mart too of course.

But, ours isn't a "Super" version so maybe not. I'll check.

I'm sure there are a lot of good filters out there but I'll stick with the HD 30 micron 63776-77A and/or 63813-90T.

Normally run the extra length 63813 in the summer months (100+ temperatures) as the larger filter surface area probably provides a little additional cooling, and run the shorter 63776 in the winter.

We 'chip in' and purchase these by the case, so we get a great price on them. Besides the Sportster EVO engines, they are also used on every BT EVO out there, so we go through a lot of them. :D

Anybody know if the rubber mounts and the rigids use the same filters? I would imagine they'd be the same.

Oh and to you guys thinking you are getting a "HD" filter. Those are not made by HD. They are subbed out. Just like genuine "HD" oil. Show me the HD oil refinery . LOL

Just a heads up on the WIX. NAPA filters and WIX filters are one in the same. So if you can't find a WIX filter and you have a NAPA near buy its the same thing. The P/N is the same other than WIX uses a 5 in front.

Picked up a NAPA filter this morning. Picked up the 1348 because it looked like the right one. I asked the guy behind the counter to check and see if it was right. He says "nope, looks like 1215 and 1225 are the only ones" So I got the 1215. Hmmmm....

I use the Bosch 3500. It's black, so it looks good. It's big, so it holds an extra half quart of oil. It's for a Ford V8, so it's cheap and I can buy it at Schucks. It has a 8-12 lb bypass valve, so it works just like the Harley chrome unit.

I get a kick out of all the worry about 30 micron this and 20 micron that. As if the Sportster engine is high-tech or something. I hate to rain on anybody's parade, but our beloved Sportster engines have all the technical sophistication of a 1956 John Deere.

Change the oil and filter regularly and the engine will last a long long time. Much longer than most of us will own them for.

Like someone mentioned in a post above, they used to not even come with filters. My first car was a '62 Chev Pickup... with no oil filter. It had done 15 years on the farm before I got it, and I fed it a diet of bulk oil every 2000 or so, and never had any engine troubles.

We worry too much.
