Been toying with the idea of doing something with the exhaust. I've had a lot of people suggest satin black on the whole system, but I'm torn between doing it on just the heat shields, just the mufflers, or both, and possibly doing the scotchbrite thing on one or the other or both. Figure I can try the scotchbrite first and I can paint it if I don't like it.

And what really pisses me off is that I wanted a black seat, they told me that Harley only makes the brown one....................and what does the "48" have??????

@ Unbalanced. Take a look at mine (page 100). I did the scotchbrite on the exhaust. Looks a lot better in person than the pic.

@Hildreth, The service department at my stealership told me that "no way" will the seat fit on a Nightster. Parts department told me different (figure that out). Bolted right up no problem whatsoever. Just need to relocate the ECM.

So how did you cover the hole from the ECM in the fender?

They just came out with the black version not more than a month ago so they might not have known about it yet... Unless they were jerks to you, that was a little harsh. All you had to do was show them the spring catalog update and I'm sure they could have ordered it. No offense, just my .02..

I see you have two of those Harley solo seats... How do you like it? Is it somewhat comfortable or does the seat mold to your butt pretty well? I've never seen one up close so I'm on the fence about it...

DaveP
5th March 2010, 13:40
My honest opinion, it's alot better than the stock Nightster seat (but then again what isn't). The seat is pretty wide, so it fits my butt pretty good. I also have the Mustang seat. Comparing the Mustang and the Bobber seat.........I would have to say that the Mustang is better, but not by much. I like the look better with the bobber seat, so I'll give up a little comfort.

@ Hunter Aran, My stealership, here in San Antonio, is probably one of the better ones as far as parts and sales. The service department on the other hand is the worst, arrogant, most worthless bunch of guys you will ever meet. That's my opinion, but I know about 20 other guys that will tell you the same thing.

I'm interested in the HD springer seat like DaveP has. What are some other options I should compare to? I'm not capable of fabbing my own mount, so I want plug and play.

I like the looks, and my ass really wants something more comfortable.

I run stock heads, Hooker Headers Troublemakers and Screaming Eagle Heaver Breather on my '08 Nightster. Had a Cobra Fuel Processor and was putting out 74.28 HP and 73.28 ft lbs. of Torque on the dyno. Added 12' MINI Apes, Forward controls, rear seat, rear foot pegs, bitch bar, rack for traveling, relocated the front turn signals to the upper tree, fork bag, tank pouch. Swapped out the Cobra unit for the Harley Super Tuner and then put on the Dyno. She is now putting out 83.16 HP and 80.22 ft lbs. of Torque. What a differnace. More mods to come soon.

I took my Rush Slip on Pipes along with my heat shields and had them powder coated satin black. Then, with a little magic, removed the powder coating to expose the chrome from underneath. I'm thinking I can do this with any graphic, logo, text, etc.

Also, major props to Mustang for the vintage solo seat! I can easily ride an entire tank of fuel and have no issues with sore butt...http://xlforum.net/photopost/data/655/medium/Pipes_Engraved1_Web.jpg

This is my 'Greenster' in progress - I posted this another forum but didn't get much feedback...

What do you guys think of a green nightster?

Currently my tank, rear fender and battery and oil cover are in for paint at Kustom Auto Body in Coaldale, AB. The guys there are real good at what they do and they do it for a reasonable cost...I was going to paint it gloss black with some white scallops but I've decided to go out on a limb and paint my bike bright green metallic. I've also gone to auto appearance in Lethbridge, AB and I've designed some ol' school black and white decals to be clearcoated with the paint. Im pumped to see how it all turns out. The paint should all be done by next week.

I still have a few things left to do with the bike until it's ready for spring. I've chopped and shaped my new rear fender. I installed my new hardtail biltwell struts, my tank lift went on very easy. Over the weekend my buddy and I wrapped my pipes as well. It took us a few hours but it was well worth it. Note: we didn't wear any gloves, eye protection or sleeves either. I've been itching and coughing for 2 days now. Fack.

Hear are some pics of my bike in progress and some of the changes and mods I've done. I've thrown a few in of what it looked like right out of the box back in July of 2008 when I got it. It's come a long ways since then.

This is the color Im going for - I hope they can match it - Ive also drawn up an old school design for the sides of the tank, the rear fender and the number 03 for the covers...I did one set all white with a black outline and I did another set with the colors swapped - I need to see how the paint turns out before I decide of the decal colors - once the decals are finished we will clear coat and buff the shit out of them fo a nice finish.

Green Biltwell - Old style metalflake - This is the color were shooting for on my bike...

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4045/4420209281_d94761e978.jpg

I was thinking of a dark green megaflake - but I kept going back to lighter, limer green, both colors would look good.

Still lots to do...If it snows again I won't fell as bad...

I will post more pics once my paint is all done! It should be all finished up next week - thats what my buddies saying - it's his shop - so what he says goes...and I hope he pushes my tank and fender to the front of the line. He usually does car/truck repair and paint - when he gets anything different - such as bikes, he tends to get excited and jump right on it. I'll keep you all posted on the progress.

Heres a few shots of the workspace...my garage

Still lots to do...If it snows again I won't fell as bad...

I will post more pics once my paint is all done! It should be all finished up next week - thats what my buddies saying - it's his shop - so what he says goes...and I hope he pushes my tank and fender to the front of the line. He usually does car/truck repair and paint - when he gets anything different - such as bikes, he tends to get excited and jump right on it. I'll keep you all posted on the progress.

b. luke - Its just a tank lift I found on ebay - you have the choice to set it at 1, 2 or 3 inches...

I love my garage, I finished that last summer - Its alot nicer working in there rather then in an unfinished workplace.

I got the lift from a guy in my hometown, I only paid about $200 for it. You can find them on ebay, but there usually running around that $400-$500 price. Those bike lifts make winters alot easier on the back.

Nightkid3,
Green is an excellent colour for the bike. Personally, I'd like to take the just the silver off and have it painted a dk green satin like HDs blue that they came out with. I'd leave the black as is (satin).

Roughly, what would that cost in USD? Anyone able to provide a ball park cost? Man, these scooters are like hole that you just throw money down. It's funny though that when you're done, you say "that was worth it". How could you explain to anyone but a HD rider?

Thanks guys. It's actually a nightster seat. I just cut it down... cut it down some more... reshaped the foam... cut the foam down some more and then sewed (badly) a cover together. It attaches the same except for the screw in the back that mounted it to the fender. Yeah... if you wiggle it it moves but so did the original and if I'm sitting on it it's fine. I'm thinking about making a fiberglass seat pan that fit's more snug though (and uses the same hardware from the front and rear).

I do not have a tank lift... just a wire tuck. My ECM is between the rear fender and the battery area / frame... suspended with zip ties. The seat as I mentioned is just cut and shaved down so it's lower profile which may make it look like the tank is lifted. I'm not really fond of the spring seats as I think they sit too high. OH... my PCIII is behind the left side cover.

- Bars... are original... but I want to swap them out for more of a frisco style. But thanks... I did run the wires internally which is subtle but makes a big difference (I think).

- Passenger pegs... Who says "she" isn't a "he"? Just kidding... I have a sissy bar that slides off and on so she sits on the fender (with a pad) that's left. She used to basically sit on the ECM with the old seat which was close so it's actually just enough room.

So wait, you running the same size wheel and tire on the front as on the rear? If so, did you have to make any mods to the forks and trees or does it clear on its own?

I replaced the trees with the vulcanworks mid glide triple tree set. The front wheel is a 16" DNA that I ordered through my local HD dealership. I also replaced the front headlight. I was a pretty easy job.

That is my favorite stock seat. Its the one I use most on my 2003. Great pictures by the way, especially if you used a cell phone to do them.

Sorry guys, I just can't stop changing things. Most recent: New metzlers, lowered the rear fender back down, lowered and rotated the bars forward a bit, painted over the gear graphic on the tank and put some big honkin' tank badges on. I'm not sure how I feel about the badges in retrospect. Almost make the bike look too polished. They'll stay for now, but I'm not sure how long.

Anyway, enjoy if this one is your kind of thing.

Feral, Lot of cool work, original, one of those rare times I like a bike's left side over the right. I think the big distractor for me is the rusty front pulley, thought about putting the coveer back on but rounding the rear end of the cover (have seen it done on another bike here and thought it looked good) and plus I am just not a fan of tape on the pipes, but lots of folks obviously do.

The steel is at least 1/8" thick and very sturdy. I thought it was a good design and it fits the bike perfect.

The wrap came from cableorganizer.com. The material is more flexible than corrugated plastic. It is split so you can place it over existing wire and it wraps one and a quarter times around. The smallest size is 1/8" which is big enough for two round wires. The prices range from $1 on up per foot depending on the size. I bought 5 foot each of 1/8", 1/4", 1/2" & 3/4". I should have bought a foot of one inch for the area at the forks. I wrapped the wires first with electrical tape to organize them in groups and to compact them. I should have taken pics without the tank, but I was ready to see what the bike was going to look like. I can remove the tank if you need to see more.

Got the stage one installed and had to take it in for a new rear tire. I might add that it was only 36 degrees.

i almost didn't get the pipes cause of how popular i found them to be on these forums, then once i decided that it didn't matter cause none of these bikes are anywhere near me i went ahead and got em. The sound is aboslutely awsome!! The 16" bars are PERFECT, i mean i have been on the bike for an hour straight which i couldn't do with the stock set up cause i was so cramped. You'd think that with your fist in the air your hands would get tires but they don't.

Maybe if they were rediculously tall it might matter but these bars and the forward controls are frikin comfortable.

you should shoot some pics up if you get a chance of how you mounted them, i've been working on welding some brackets , but with them being kinda heavy i have and issue with them flexing on me.

I LIKE! I think my iron would look pretty hot with that paint scheme. I might eventually do something like that. And those ammo cans are perfect. Finally, you found a saddle bag solution that doesn't require relocation of the tail lamps! Is there any way we could get some pics of the mounting of the ammo cans, like what on the bike they are bolted to?

Waiting to have enough time to start really messing with it. First ride was fun though, 2 and a half hours of rain, fog, mud and loose gravel, with brand new tires. Scared the crap out of me in one go!

uKnightster,

They are Nash 12" gimps, very comfortable - esp since I am of shorter build. To be honest, the struts are obviously stiff but over the stock I can't tell much of a difference. I rode an hour on the highway without any issues so I am ok with them.

J.R. aka Jesse

Looks like you removed the reflectors from the rear. I need to get around to doing that. From what I can tell, I can just remove the right side by unbolting it. But it looks like I'll have to cut the reflector off the right side side to keep my license plate bracket. Did you find an easier way?

It's actually not the easiest thing if you want to remove the reflector AND the piece it attaches to like I did. I had my fender off to have it repainted, and I took the struts off too so I was forced to take both pieces off of the fender where they are riveted on. Then I actually cut the piece that holds the reflector OFF, smoothed it down, and shot it with black spray paint. It's completely gone and it looks much cleaner than if you just rip the reflector off. It isn't the hardest thing to do, but it does involve unbolting the rear struts and possibly taking the fender off/drilling out the rivets that attach the struts. It's an at home job, it just may take some time. Hope this helps you!

Yeah, that's what it was lookin' like to me... just been too lazy to tackle it. Almost took my Dremel to it with the mounts on the bike (I new better, but my lazyness almost got the best of me). Def looks a lot better with the reflectors gone. Thanks!

My Burly cable kit was for the 14" bars and I found that I had quite a few inches of extra length after I installed them internally. You will probably be OK with the 12". The wire extensions were about 8" long.
