The engine guard is there because I just started riding last year and fell more at ease with it. (I laid the bike down one time so quite happy I installed it before that)
Since its a European bike, we get the licence plate in the centre of the bike, below the fender. but that’s so ugly that I had the dealer install a side mount, couldn't tell you the brand if it was to save my life. It's very solid, one piece aluminium.

I'm glad you all like it, got a lot of great ideas from this forum!

It looks like the HD 2 up I was given but I will have to move the ECM to get it on.

Thanks! its the stock seat from a 2008 XL883R. They also have the PCU down there so I didn't have to change anything. I wouldn't recommend it for long trips, after about 1u30 I have to get of and stretch my legs.

BTW: I made a short video to put on youtube, if anybody cares :)

Yours must be a 2 up seat form an '04 - '06 then. Some folks have fitted such seats to '07 - '09 bikes by modding the seat, making a hollow underneath for the ECM, and leaving the ECM where it is.

Silverfox,
What pipes are those?

silverfox648
12th August 2010, 11:21
Sbaker,
Those are hooker rebel pipes. Unfortunately hooker quit making pipes for bikes (got these for 130 bucks on a sell out sale). You can still manage to find some for sale only through third party sellers but not at the prices that hooker was selling them at. They are nice pipes though.

Yeti
12th August 2010, 12:10
Did you have any problems with the Hookers?
I had all kinds of problems installing mine.
It seems as if they didn't measure anything when engineering them.

silverfox648
12th August 2010, 12:56
Yeti,
Yeah i knew i would run into a few fit issues from reading about other peoples experiences with these pipes on this forum, but at the price i decided to give them a whirl. I know they fit extremely tight if at all on bikes with stock control, but i was putting on forwards so that was no an issue. The thing i did have to modify was the exhaust mounting bracket. I had to take about 3/8" off in a spot where it was coming into contact with the rear brake linkage. This i think would happen regardless of your control location, but it took a few minutes with the angle grinder and some flat black paint and that was fixed. So all and all it went as smoothly as i could have hoped for.

It must be because I cannot get it on without either moving the ECM or modify the seat.

I have the nightster wheels on my bike. I broke the wheel down and had the spokes powder coated which ran me $100 only because the labor of taping up all the threads and strining safety wire through the tape to be able to hang. I then laced the wheels up myself then took the rim to get trued up and tightened by a shop with the equipment. That ran almost $150. The end result was very nice but it wasn't cheap.

Rhinehart Slip-ons and a Arlen Ness Big Sucker A/C. The A/C cover and exhaust shields were powder coated to match the engine / frame colors.

It depends... I let my bike sit for a couple days which let the lifters bleed down, so when I cracked open the rocker box bolts, there wasn't even enough pressure to break the gasket seal... So I went to slide the cam cover back on, and it went back on like butter... Torqued those bolts, and then the top end and never had an issue...

well ive been so busy with work(commercial a/c and refrigeration), that i only get to ride on the weekends, so i can let it sit for a while lol, so if i let i sit for a few day it should slide right back on if i understood that correctly? no need to tuch the rocker boxes?

Yeah for sure! It actually has the same padding in the p-pad as my solo seat does. It's nothing like a true passanger seat but the girl likes it, and says it's not too bad! She said she'd take that over just sitting on the fender! Check out motheroadcustoms66 on ebay. He's the one where I got it from!

Well, I'll give you the scientific answer of "probably." I wouldn't say 100%... The upper rocker is just a cover... the reason for taking the lower off is to relieve the pressure from the lifters and push-rods... Since they're metal gaskets with silicone anyway, some guys still just take the pressure off and then re-tighten 'em. Follow the manual when doing this though, you want to relieve pressure evenly, so 1/8 - 1/4 turn at a time for each bolt...

Guy I know here has had his off and on several times with the same gaskets... Again, :dunno

Guy I know here has had his off and on several times with the same gaskets... Again, :dunno

o ok thanx for the help, i figured it was one of those have to do it to tell things, ill order the gasket just in case.

Did you install the seat yourself? was it hard?
How is the ride on the springer compared to the original seat? softer? better? worse? can you ride for 1h before your ass gets numb? Please tell me

I enjoy the spring seat a lot better then the stock seat. It absorbs a lot more of the shock then the stock seat does. It's a little different of a ride on the solo seat, but if you could ride with the stock seat you'll be able to ride on the solo seat with no problem. I did install everything on my own. The only thing that was a little hard was installing the fender p-pad, but if you use your head you can figure it out. If you need me to take close up pics for you just PM me and i'll get you some!

How do you like your rush slip ons. Ive been thinking about those for some time now. Did you have to remap the ECU with the 2.25 baffles?

Love them. They sound really good: nice deep, throaty sound most of the time. They are loud, but not obnoxiously so; but when you get on it, WOW. They really bark with authority. You don't have to remap with just the slip-ons (you won't hurt anything), but it still helps.

I've also got the Rush slip-ons on my '06 R. They were on it when I bought it, really like the quality and the sound is great-just like tekdiver describes. Can't compare to performance over a stock bike, but I love the way mine runs. :D

I really like the tank badge! I was coming up during the whole changeover to and from AMF, so that really brings back memories. Very nice job with this one. What's in the front fender mounts? Purpose? They look cool, but I've never seen anything like that before, so I'm a bit baffled. Where did you get them, or did you make them yourself? Really like the headlight mount, too.

I have the 2.25 as well, and agree that they sound really good. Don't let sgtt45 scare you off, though. They really aren't all that loud, and setting off a car alarm isn't very hard.

Try searching on here, that's where I found all the info. I think it was Cosmo Kramer, or howardpowered (sp) that had all the part #s. Super easy to do and was under a $100, I think around $75. I did it this past winter so the details are a little foggy. If you can't find it let me know I should have the part #s around here somewhere.

The AC is a 4" Velocity stack with internal filter, picked it up off E-Bay as a kit but I am sure you can piece it together if you canít find the set up. Do a search on EBay for Sportster Velocity stack with filter and it should turn up.

i've had my 79 ironhead for about 20 years now. a couple years ago got a 95 engine and put it into a modified 80 frame. have rode many carbed bt. and honestly i had never given an EFI engine a second thought. didn't like the way they sound didn't think there was really any advantage to having EFI carbs are easier to tune and so on and so on. but tonight i was at a buddies house and i have a set of fog light on my bike for headlights he was asking me how good they were. i told him to take it for a ride and see. well he did comes back we BS around some more and he asks if i've ever rode an EFI bike i told him no and of course he tells me to take his 2008 Nightster out. and of course i had to do it. well i pulled out on the road. the first shift i just hit the throttle like i normally would my 95 and that think really snapped. going down the road i took it easy getting the feel for the bike. at the end of a good long strait stretch i turned around and got on it pretty good. it amazed me how much throttle response it had. i hit second gear i was prob around 5000rpm when i shifted into and crack back into the throttle about half way or a little more and with the bike strutted in the rear i almost lifted the front tire. i was shocked i mean honestly i expected the bike would have a little more pep than my 95 1200 BUT NOT THAT MUCH MORE!
and i must say again i was really surprised and loved the throttle response that had. I had never even considered buying an EFI bike but now i may have changed my mind. not that i'm gonna go out and buy one tomorrow or anything but i sure wouldn't pass up a decent deal on one.

here's some pics of my buddies 2008 nightster. done up his way. he bought it new off the showroom floor and didn't have it 2 weeks before the mods started!!! which i also love!

how much to get one made for a bike with shocks?

A bike with shocks won't work unless you've got your fender hard mounted somewhere...the strut stays still and the fender travels with the shocks...a recipe for breakage...

It *seems like* you should be able to simply not mount the fender to it, and it'll live. You wouldn't be able to use it for anything but looks, though.

It shouldn't, if it's mounted well. But, if that's a concern, bend a tab at the bottom and one at the back, that will keep it from moving around.

a sissy bar if for your old lady or to strap stuff to. that wouldnt do either, so what would be the point? looks? looks dumb on a swingarm bike without a purpose.

why yes it does :smoke, all im saying is make it usable. you can make a sissy bar almost exactly like that or probly buy one for that matter and it will be functional. then you have something to stap your duffel bag to or whatever. no need to get your panties in a wad.

it is mounted to the fender. it has a piece of flat bar that runs under the fender up to the frame. there is more than enough support there. if the sissy bar wasn't attached to the fender how could someone ride on the rear seat if the fender is just hanging out there?

asasial
25th September 2010, 10:16
ok i see what you are talking about. to do one on a bike with shocks it would have to be attached to the original strut tabs or somewhere on the frame not the swing arm.
it is possible to mount it to the swing arm but it's gonna move everytime you hit a bump and wouldn't be really all that functional. but if ya hit a hard enough bump and the sissy bar is close enough to the passenger it could come up and hit them in the back. hey that's one way to get the ol lady off the bike if ya don't want her there...

The hole in the fender can be worked around....do a little searching on this site and you'll see plenty of people that have done it and how it was done...(it varies...everything from replacing with an older fender to "patching in" a piece of metal...)

The tach is a HD part available on their website. I got mine through Zanotti's & it is plug & play. You also have to buy, if I remember correctly, a new top clamp since your old one is part of the speedo housing. The tach kit is listed as working only on the 883's - the only difference is the redline on the display is not correct; no biggie

It is not a billet aluminum piece... far from it. It is plastic but it seems to be of good quality, only time will tell. The outer ring is installed with a double face tape (the gray 3M strong type). You have to align the outer ring so that it is even in all sides with the cap. It really transforms the look of the tank. I like it.

Thanks!

The air cleaner assembly is from S&S, part# 17-0448. It is designed 2004-up sportsters. It only comes in chrome, I simply had the cover powdercoated black.

I did not lift the tank (personal preference as far as looks go), but I did do a wire tuck and coil relocation. The wire tuck is a lot easier if you do a tank lift. (you'll have room for the wires above the backbone.)

The speedo clamp was created by another member on this forum. You can find it on ebay, just do a search for "fishboy clamp". It is a little pricey, but a very high quality part.

Good luck!

Here (http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/showthread.php?p=2625071#post2625071) is a thread that has a better pic of the headlight. Its a Dyna headlamp bucket I got on ebay for about $20. I took the guts out of mine and transferred them over. Then went down to the harley dealer and got the mount for the dyna, and drilled a hole in my triple tree to put the mount there. In the thread it has a link to where I got the bit. And a pic of it. It worked perfect. Hope this helps.

It was done being built 2 days before sturgis so paint was a miror detail in my itch to ride! It snowed yesterday where I live so its all gonna get stripped down and powdercoated once i figure out the colour scheme i'm gonna go with.

As for the exhaust I would never ever deal with fsdexhaust again. The heat sheild was cheap aluminum and broke off on the ride to sturgis leaving just the bolts with little chunks of it. The ceramic is terrible quality and there is a hole i can stick 3 fingers through in the bottom!! He was months late sending them so i could not even use them last year when i ordered them in the early june. Trying to right his wrong he promised me a flamethrower kit which never came, then he quit answering my phone calls and e-mails.

Firstly, Thank you!
Secondly, i mailed my frame to them from canada. I just wanted to be double sure with the welds cause I don't always have access to a TIG and riding down the highway fast is not something i wanna make a wager my welding skills on. I welded the oil tank mounts. It may be pretty costly to mail a frame from far away back and forth, you may be better off just getting a frame made and sent.

That being said, i went with the tail section kit just so i wouldn't have to change anything with my registration and insurance or need to get it safety'd.

Thanks Gents! That's a hell of a compliment considering the talent on this forum.

to bad youre also using the V&H shortshots...

As for the Short Shots, and their pervasive use among new Nightster owners...My opinion is that they are the cheapest and easiest way to correct the aesthetic and acoustic problems with the stock setup.

As for their performance, the few tenths of a second they would cost me on the drag strip has little affect on the way they complement this bike on the street.

If this is what I was going for, I promise you, it wouldn't have Short Shots on it.

Details, please!

the webman

All hardware and mods installed by Yours truly.

Hardware:
2009 Nightser
SE Air Cleaner
V&H Short Shots w/baffles (Yeah What of it!!) :gun
HD Forward Controls
Customized front spoiler (definitely not made to easily fit a nightster much less with forwards)
Dyno Jet Power Commander 5 (yet untuned)
SE Spark Plugs and Orange Spark Plug Wires
Biltwell Tracker Bars
HD Silencer Grips, Shifter and Pegs (Great look and light weight)
West Eagle Slim Solo Seat
Autometer Speedo Mount
Heat Demons Grip Warmers (because cold, stiff fingers are hazardous)
Harrison Specialties Turn Signal Relay
Harrsion Specialties LED Turn Signals
Progressive Front "drop-in" springs
Progressive 412 rear shocks (Another cheap and easy way to fix a shortcoming in the stock setup.
DEI "Titanium" Heat Wrap
Paint by Joann Bortles http://www.crazyhorsepainting.com/index.shtml

Modifications:
Front Fender mount bracket removed and front fender moved to rear. (It's a tad too skinny but covers the contact strip perfectly. I'm currently considering a "48'ster" front fender for the extra width)

Sprocket Cover, Upper and Lower Belt Guards removed

Stock mirrors inverted. (Because they work just fine...)

Speedo relocated to front tank bolt I chopped the ring from the handlebar bracket that held the speedo and used it to keep the speedo looking like a "finished" part and kept the indicator lights on the handlebar bracket.

Wire Relocation (stock wire management parts removed)
All wiring is wrapped in black leather under the tank along the frame and down behind the battery cover on the primary side.

ECU relocated to battery (required trimming of the mount tabs)

Ignition relocated to frame where oil tank bolt used to be.

Front Forks, Headlight Brow, Progressive Shock covers SE Aircleaner and LED Signals "Scotch Brite'd" to get a some premature wear on the powdercoat of those items

Brass colored washers used where washers could be used and some parts colored gold to tie in the "gold'ish" Heat Wrap.

Drilled more holes in the Oil and Battery covers then I care to count. Actually does a very good job of cooling the Oil Cover (used to get uncomfortably hot)

Fender rails chopped.

Shaved that mount tab under the top tube.

LED Front signals mounted to headlight brow

Uh! I think thats about it.

Future:

PC V Dyno Tune

"48'ster" front fender for the rear

Cam Cover chop

Paint Derby Cover, Primary Cover and Cam Cover

Considering 2:1 pipes... Either V&H Comps or D&D Bobcat to make "scarfmace" :geek happy. :D

Considering drop-in cams but I have some learning to do.. This is my first bike and I never so much as turned a bolt on anything mechanical before I got it.

Possible NHRS "Displacement Upgrade" at the far end of the daydream spectrum. :danceele

Internal Rewire "ala Cosmo" His work as well as others who've done it will be invaluable when I decide to do this.

Thanks Esa

The pic of the oil cover has the best shot of the seat plugs. Hard to get a better angle I think.

Yes, there are rubber plugs/stoppers on the seat bolts. I picked 'em up at Lowes, drilled all the way through them with a 1/4 drill bit then half way through with a 1/2 drill bit. I filed them a bit with a round file so they would fit snug onto the frame under the seat. Then pushed 'em onto the seat bolts that I cut down to 3/4". I had to lube my socket to get it into the hole drilled in the rubber plug to tighten the nut down but the rubber on the stopper was flexible enough to not be too much of a problem. It's by no means a spring and will not save your back but it does is provide a clean looking and somewhat softer interface between the seat and the frame than just leaving the seat bolts exposed to tap on the frame at every bump.
