View Full Version : How many guys run with high beams in the daytime??
kvanderlin 2nd August 2006, 21:29 I was checking my lighting the other day before a ride and noticed how much brighter the headlight is on High beam. Seems like it might help increase visibility somewhat during the day time (for those that want to see you). Just wondering how many actually run daytime with highbeams?
whispanic 2nd August 2006, 21:31 Studies prove its helpfull and that is why I run mine on high, but nothing is fulproof.

SpartanDen 2nd August 2006, 21:58 no high beams, but my driving lights (aux lights if you please) are on and they are brighter than my headlight. Lights always on!
Samickguy15 2nd August 2006, 22:01 Same as...It's funny though, b/c the a$s clowns still try to run you over. Might be b/c they're on their cell phones<-my buddy about got t-boned the other day by a guy on his damn phone, or putting make up on <-just saw that one the other day going down the interstate.

cphilip 2nd August 2006, 22:11 allways high... um... headlamp thats is. Sometimes I forget to turn em to low beam when night falls...

kvanderlin 2nd August 2006, 22:31 Well, that's what I've been doing since I noticed the significant difference the other day. Seems many others are too so I will continue to do so. Thanks for the responses. Ride safe.

kdarejr 2nd August 2006, 22:53 i do but they still dont see you !
cantolina 2nd August 2006, 23:01 Always on high beam during the day until I got my aux lights... :)
DC in PHX 2nd August 2006, 23:15 High beams for me..Every "Flash" Friday!!:p :p
Kentucky 2nd August 2006, 23:41 If that funny looking blue light isn't on something is wrong. I run the brights all the time day or night and that would include the crotch rocket which runs H4 bulbs. I have however turned the lamps down a bit so I don't blind others at night......
41caninek1 2nd August 2006, 23:46 I guess I'm odd man out on this one. Always on lows an fllash to hi and low at intersections or when I think I may not be seen. kind of like a slow oscillating system I guess.
bs2100 2nd August 2006, 23:46 I have however turned the lamps down a bit so I don't blind others at night......
I get really annoyed by people (since lots cars drive around with the high beam on anyways too) that are behind me at a light and I have to tilt my mirrors away so I'm not blinded. But when motorcycles do it it seems like my windshield is extra dirty so I just use a lot of the windshield washer fluid trying to get it super clear.
skratch 3rd August 2006, 00:08 didn't we just have this thread? a couple of points from the other thread, flashing your lights from low to high at an intersection may have the unintended consequence of the cage driver thinking you are telling him to go ahead... and...
its really hard to blind someone with your lights in the daytime.
anyway, most of the motorcycle manuals (driving types) that i have seen have recommended driving with brights on in the daytime. if conditions deteriorate to the point where your high beams would distract other drivers, then of course, revert to low beam. or better yet, seek shelter :hidechai

:doh No way - really? I gotta check that out! :roflblack You might also be surprised to learn that the taillight gets brighter when you put on the brakes!
(wise ass, I know) :frownthre
Just kiddin'. Actually, I ride with my aux lights and low beams on. Makes for a wide pattern of light that I think makes it easier for cages to judge your speed and distance. My problem with the single high beam is that it practically blinds the drivers so they can't tell how far away you are or how fast you're going.
grizz420 3rd August 2006, 14:40 always on high beem in the day time
Snuffy 3rd August 2006, 15:02 High beam always

While I do agree that bright lamps should always be on, I do not agree with leaving them at the stock aiming point for this very reason. I am by no means out to make things more difficult for people in terms of their ability to see; after I pass or when I am coming their direction. The whole point is to be seen and yet remain safe both in terms of being seen and allowing others to still see. Some of the new lamps are very bright and I am not talking about the off road lamps people switch to that are not "street legal". I'm talking about the standard wattage "cool blue" or "Silver" lamps. Either of these make a world of difference to me
2wheeltodd 3rd August 2006, 17:38 Always on high, except when following LEO.
sportysrock 3rd August 2006, 18:19 Mostly on high beam, nobody flashes back so it can't be too offensive.

My question was primarily directed at riding during the daytime. I've yet to be blinded or blind anyone during daylight.;) Others have also mentioned the blinding situation which is not an issue during daylight hours.
Thumper26 12th August 2006, 22:30 I ALWAYS ride with my high beam on during the day...:tour

toe 12th August 2006, 22:37 In a car, it's usually the low-beam filament that burns out.........
So I figure that I'll equalize the burn time on the filaments (or burn out the high-beam filament first) and save the low-beam filament for night when I need it..................

True dat:smoke :doh
Crash03 24th August 2006, 14:16 I run highbeams day and night unless someone "flashes" me, then I'll dim it.
1STONE 24th August 2006, 22:58 Always high beam day or night, want to be seen as much as possible
rikrak 24th August 2006, 23:38 I run on high during the day. I run on low after dark and go to high when there is a reason and no on-coming traffic. I do run a "brighter" H4 light then stock, an 85/100 I feel there is no need to "blind" a cager just to be seen :doh I guess if one lowers the aim somewhat it's not too bad and might make some sense but a blinded cager who drifts to his right "might" freak when he hits (gravel, curb, drop off, whatever) then jerk his wheel left thus spinning out of control and as in Batman SPLAT:buddies . Not your normal MVA but not really all that unusual.:frownthre :frownthre :frownthre

wilson_nick_w 25th August 2006, 00:14 i run high beam during the day because i would rather my high beam go out from being on all the time rather than the low beam and being stuck w/just the high beam at night blinding people.
speedster 28th August 2006, 22:14 Funny you should bring this up. In our local newspaper, someone wrote the editor and stated that people SHOULD start turning on their headlights on motorcycles to make motorcycles more visible like cars!!!! Don't know what planet he fell from, but hasn't this been part of the manufacturing process for the last 10 to 15 years? That said, I run with my low beams on in the daylight, but it makes sence to use the high beams....thanks for the idea. Tim
Randy U. 29th August 2006, 20:50 Someone mentioned that to me a couple of weeks ago, ever since I’ve been running on high beam
jaws 29th August 2006, 21:10 Interesting, never thought about it...can't hurt
spatial.hd 29th August 2006, 21:24 I always run with the high beam on during the day. I usually don't switch to low until it's dark enough to switch out my dark goggle lenses for clear.
roadogette 29th August 2006, 21:29 Run my high beam all the time during the day.
release 29th August 2006, 21:57 Always high beam day or night, want to be seen as much as possible
Same here - I've only been flashed about 4 times in 3 years. It's very easy to keep the motorcycle high-beam from bothering someone, as opposed to running highs in a car. Heck, my bike with highs on, doesn't come close to many cars with fog lights, running lights, halogen bulbs, etc.
MacDuff 29th August 2006, 22:22 Yes I run my Highbeam during the day.
Albie1200 29th August 2006, 22:26 Always on day or night for me as well.
hybriDatsun350 29th August 2006, 22:37 Always run with the high beam during the day and low beam at night. It sure as hell doesn't hurt, but it makes me feel a helluva a lot more visible! :)
rikava 30th August 2006, 00:01 I use high beams day and night unless I'm behind somebody at a stoplight.
40-45% of my riding, 28 miles one way, is at night.......I work a swing shift.
I have 20 of those miles through heavily deer infested country and if I pass somebody and they dim there lights I motion for them to put thier brights back on. I really helps me and them too but they don't know that.
