View Full Version : Cool Firefox Tips & Tricks
bplinson 2nd March 2005, 19:37 One of the cool features of Firefox is the Live Bookmark. This is like an RSS reader.
If you would like to see all the titles of the new posts on XLF and not have to visit the website itself set up a Live Bookmark.
To do this click BOOKMARKS and then MANAGE BOOKMARKS
Then at the top left side of the window that pops up click FILE and then NEW LIVE BOOKMARK
In the the new box the pops up at name type in XL Forum or XLF or whatever you want.
In Feed Location copy and paste the URL below.
http://www.xlforum.net/forums/external.php?type=rss2
Now click OK.
Now before closing the Bookmarks manager find the new Live Bookmark you just created and inside Bookmark Manager drag it up to Bookmark Toolbar Folder so it will show up on your Firefox toolbar.
Now just click on the XL Forum Live Bookmark and you will see the titles all of the new posts!!!
You can do this with any RSS feed. I like to have CNN and Fox News Live Bookmarks on my toolbar.
One thing though...do not forget to sometimes right click on the Live Bookmark and click REFRESH LIVE BOOKMARK or the feed will not update. Opening anc closing Firefox will achieve the same thing.
If you know of any other cool firefox tricks post them here!!
bplinson 2nd March 2005, 19:39 Almost forgot!! When you click on the Live Bookmark and see a post that you are interested in just click on it and it will open right XLF right there.
Kath 2nd March 2005, 19:43 Is Firefox free or is it expensive? I've never seen/used it before...always used IE.
bplinson 2nd March 2005, 19:46 Firefox is not only free but it is the best browser going. Get it at www.mozilla.org .
It takes a while to get used to but I think you will like it much better than IE and it is much more secure.
All the geeks use it and so should you...well the only geeks not using it are the ones working at Micro$oft.
barry1967 2nd March 2005, 19:56 Bert, I can't get the live bookmark into the bookmark folder thingy?
barry1967 2nd March 2005, 19:59 I got it. Thanks This is my first time with firefox. I'll see how i like it.
gunlocators 2nd March 2005, 20:02 I used firefox off and on for a while and it is a great browser. Very secure and well programmed. Nice tip just finished setting mine up.
Gone 2nd March 2005, 20:07 Make certain to right click on the bar on top -- go to customize -- and drag the tab icon up into the bar -- it is the hottest feature that firefox has TABBED browsing -- I can never go back!!
willprevale 2nd March 2005, 20:07 Firefox is a great browser. I use it for almost everything. I say almost... the google search tool in the tool bar doesn't work.
gearhead 2nd March 2005, 20:12 Firefox is a great browser. I use it for almost everything. I say almost... the google search tool in the tool bar doesn't work.
I wonder why it doesnt work? my works fine. I google as my home page but dont need to now with it in the toolbar. This forum seems to be the next runner up in it's place.
bplinson 2nd March 2005, 20:12 Hmm...works for me. Which version are you using?
willprevale 2nd March 2005, 20:14 I can't figure it out but I have to go back to IE for internet searches.
Gone 2nd March 2005, 20:14 Firefox is a great browser. I use it for almost everything. I say almost... the google search tool in the tool bar doesn't work.
Mine does try downloading the newest version -- that will reistall -- without changing anything --
I have mine set so that all of the new windows open up as tabs rather than new windows keeps things really clean -- it is great to be working in one tab and open another tab for a google or dictionary search.
willprevale 2nd March 2005, 20:18 Should I uninstall what I have?
bplinson 2nd March 2005, 20:20 Will, click on HELP and then ABOUT. It will tell you what version you are running. If you are not running 1.0.1 then download the new one and install it. DO NOT uninstall the one you are on now or you may lose all your bookmarks and other settings.
willprevale 2nd March 2005, 20:21 Thanks Bert. I'll try it now.
willprevale 2nd March 2005, 20:23 It says I'm running 1.0
willprevale 2nd March 2005, 20:42 I reinstalled firefox. The google search engine still doesn't respond.
bubbahog 2nd March 2005, 20:52 Anyone heard of a site called Bugmenot? It's (duh) www.bugmenot.com .
It's a listing of login ID's for sites that want them. If you don't want to register to look at content, this is a place to look for a login. Great for security - nytimes.com does NOT need my name and email address.
Anyway, bugmenot has a Firefox plugin on their homepage that will allow you to right click in the login name box, and it will automatically insert a name and password, if one exists.
bplinson 2nd March 2005, 20:58 Holy Shit!!! That site works!!! I just logged into a different forum with someone elses account info. I will definately check that site daily to insure no account here shows up.
gearhead 2nd March 2005, 23:58 I reinstalled firefox. The google search engine still doesn't respond.
man, i dunno, I'll see if google has anything to say about it.
As for bug me not, it's great. I havent registered for anything flippant, like a news site, for a looong time.
midnitewolf 3rd March 2005, 04:59 Gearhead ,
you might need to add google to your extensions . ( tools drop down to extensions click and see if it listed if not go to bottom right and click on get more ext. )
FastFwd 3rd March 2005, 10:35 WillP,
I had trouble with using the search on Firefox. You have to hit the enter key after you type in your search info. I thought you had to click the green arrow or whatever. Maybe that's the prob. If not someone will find out what's up.
SixMilesFromHell 13th March 2005, 08:24 One of the cool features of Firefox is the Live Bookmark. This is like an RSS reader.
You can do this with any RSS feed. I like to have CNN and Fox News Live Bookmarks on my toolbar.
How do you find the links to other RSS feeds. This is a cool feature

'
you have to use Mozilla FIREFOX..
there is a difference..
gunlocators 13th March 2005, 22:35 My toolbar icon says mozilla firefox?
Darhawk 18th March 2005, 02:32 Okay, got my computer all back up and running, and have more spyware, adware, virus blockers, and firewalls than Carter's got liver pills. Got rid of Internet Explorer by loading Firefox. Now I have me a problem...........when I use the reply to a thread box, new thread box, or reply to a PM box, and I try to use the cut, paste, copy, upload picture, etc., functions, I can't do it. I get a message that says I have to "edit my Mozilla config file to allow this action". I can't find such a file, and how do I edit it if I did find it??????????
jimmyheadgear 19th March 2005, 19:55 I'd like to pass on a quick tip that would help speed it up just a bit. If you are a broadband user, this is something you won't want to pass up, especially with how simple it is to do.
First, open Firefox. In the address bar, type "about:config" and press "Enter."
In the page that comes up, scroll down and edit the following entries:
Locate "network.http.pipelining" and set it to "true."
Locate "network.http.proxy.pipelining" and set it to "true."
Locate "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" and set it to "30."
Finally, right-click anywhere on the page. Select "New" and then "Integer." In the box that comes up, type "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and click "OK." Then give it the value of "0" (zero) and click "OK." This simply denotes how long Firefox waits before acting on received information.
If you are on broadband, your browsing experience should be quite a bit faster, now!
BigBrotherWatching 5th July 2005, 15:17 Firefox is great!! I have been using it ever since my bro told me about it and have quit using IE. Most of all I LOVE not getting the pop-ups anymore.
I have found a good program that really helped me out a lot. It is called PROCESS PATROL. It enables you to investigate all those processes that you see in the Task Manager and tells you which ones are spyware or not. My computer was having a lot of problems with spyware until I got this. It will not remove the spyware but does enable you to create a list of bad processes and then you can kill the process (you have to do this every time you reboot). You can also keep the program running in background so that these spyware programs do not come back (which they have a tendency to do). You can download this program for free by clicking here (http://www.freewarefiles.com). It takes a little work to get it set up, but it is a great program.
bplinson 5th July 2005, 15:26 Come on Big Bro, you are a computer programmer!! :p If you do not want to have to shut down the unwanted processes everytime you reboot do this:
Right click My Computer then click Manage.
Click on Services and Applications
Click on Services and then on the right side find the pesky service. Right click on the service you do not want the click STOP. Then to make sure it does not come back on right click on the serice again and click PROPERTIES. Now in the STARTUP TYPE drop down box change it to MANUAL or DISABLED.
Click OK.
If this does not work search the registry for the offending program and delete all occurances of it. (be careful with this one and be be sure you back up the registry before deleting anything in the regisrty)
BigBrotherWatching 5th July 2005, 15:45 OH my head is spinning - that is too much work !!!!
Clark_2510 5th July 2005, 16:38 Just downloaded FireFox. I must say it is amazing what good info you find on here. I did what jimmyheadgear said and bam my broadband acts like broadband. So far it seems like IE and the bookmarks remind of netscape.
All thanks for the good gouge. Much easier to browser for new parts now ;)
John
BarAndShield 12th August 2005, 22:30 Great tip- just downloaded Firefox myself :)
thanks guys!
ForensicSgt 12th August 2005, 23:08 Here's a link to a handy little freeware program for Firefox called "FireTune"
http://www.totalidea.com/freestuff4.htm
old head 9th October 2005, 21:57 Firefox is much better than IE< been using it for awhile, switched from another browser-forget the name (old age I guess). Still can't the wife to switch though.
Oh yeah, I used to use Opera.
Chucky 9th October 2005, 23:33 I have heard good things about Firefox and followed the instructions in this post to install and customize. It works great. But, I can't get the live bookmarks to load. I have tried a couple of ways but keep getting a failed to load line. Any ideas?
MusclePump 10th October 2005, 06:57 What's the new live feed URL for the board now?
bplinson 10th October 2005, 17:35 http://www.xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/external.php?type=rss2
Carl-04XL 13th October 2005, 16:10 I finally got it to load correctly.
Bert, the abreviated link in your post doesn't copy correctly, so I moused over it and got the link info to show in the bottom left status box of the Firefox window and then manually typed the missing info. Now it works great.

cjburr 27th November 2005, 06:02 I am running the latest Firefox, I have Firetune and optimized Firefox with it, my problem is I am unable to see any thumbnails that are posted on the forum. I have been unable to find any help from the mozilla site and have played with every setting I could find to no avail. Any help from the Firefox users out there would be appreciated immensely. This problem has plagued me since I switched to Firefox, I was able to view thumbnails with IE, however when I put Firefox on, somehow IE was wiped from the computer and without it I can no longer download anything from Microsoft, not even a new version of IE!!!:censor :censor :censor :censor
MrJimi tried valiantly to help and I believe Raysheen was looking into the problem for me and I appreciate the time they took to help me but I am still in
THUMBNAIL HELL!!!!!!!!!!:wonderlan:
cjburr 9th January 2006, 01:10 Yesterday I viewed the forum on a computer using IE. I cannot believe what I have been missing, thumnails all get displayed, smilies that move, I get none of this with firefox. I have reinstalled firefox to no avail, and I cannot download IE because after the download of firefox the latest version of IE that I had was somehow corrupted to the point that I cannot even reload any version of IE from the microsoft download site. Any help in this matter would be appreciated immensely.:dunno :dunno
I thought this site was optimized for firefox:dunno :dunno
decman 9th January 2006, 01:43 You have something else wrong, virus maybe?
I have IE, Firefox and Netscape and they all run fine.
What operating system are you running?
cjburr 9th January 2006, 01:51 Windows XP, ZoneAlarm, McAfee Antivirus, Adaware with Adwatch. Just reloaded firefox again, version 1.5 same as I had before, thought perhaps it was because I had not downloaded any add-ons so I got the shockwave, java runtime add-ons from the firefox add-on page . I will check things now.
cjburr 9th January 2006, 02:01 Still no thumnails and no moving smilies, this sucks:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor
I had this posted for quite awhile if you guys can't help I'll just try a system restore. Don't really want to do that as all my Sportster bookmarks will disappear and I'll have to start over:censor :censor :censor :censor :censor :censor
Sorry for all the profanity but this is driving me crazy!!!!!!!! The only reason I downloaded firefox was because the site said it was optomized for it.
Oh well, live and learn:( :( :( :( :(
No viruses either at least none detected. It's got to be a setting somewhere I just can't figure it out
a45junkie 9th January 2006, 02:18 have you checked the tools/options an checked the settings in there?
cjburr 9th January 2006, 02:38 Yes I don't see anything there that would prevent me from viewing thumbnails or letting the smilies move. Thanks for the help though I appreciate it.:D
bplinson 9th January 2006, 07:35 I don't know what is wrong with your system but before you do a restore be sure and save a copy of your bookmarks to diskette or a USB memory stick.
To save your Firefox bookmarks click on Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks > File > Export.
Your bookmarks will be saved to a file called bookmarks.html which you can then import into IE or Firefox.
For your image problems the only thing I can suggest is click on Tools > Options > Content. Make sure there is a checkmark in the LOAD IMAGES box and insure there is nothing in the Exceptions area.
Also what version of FF are you running? The latest is 1.5.
bplinson 9th January 2006, 07:36 Are you running Norton Security Center?
Sportster1200 9th January 2006, 10:31 Firefox? Bwahahaha.
Firefox is the greatest. Firefix is sooo much better than anything. Firefox never causes any problems. Firefox is so secure. Firefox is compatible with every website in the world.
Bwahahaha.
Stick with IE. Might not be the latest and greatest but at least it works.
I would check for a virus/exploit/worm. Stopping downloads from a anti virus or the microsoft windows update site is one of the first things they do.
Also check http://www.mozilla.org/security/ to see if your problem is documented there.
Kong
cjburr 10th January 2006, 11:55 Bert, I am running McAfee and Zonealarm, not Norton. All the things you said to check were O.K. I am running version 1.5 of FF. I think it's in the config file for FF somewhere. If you are running FF 1.5 could you make a copy of your config file that I could then check line by line against mine ?? Jimmyheadgear asked me to check something in my config file and it wasn't even there, so I added it but to no avail. perhaps there are more missing pieces to my config file ?? You probably already know this but to get to the config file you open FF and type about:config in the address bar then hit enter.
Thanks for all the suggestions from everyone
Chris
jimmyheadgear 10th January 2006, 17:08 Chris
This is probably a stupid question, but, have you installed the current Flash program?
bplinson 10th January 2006, 19:44 I don't think is is possible to copy the config file.
gronk62 11th January 2006, 01:11 I don't really know anything about fixing software problems.
Its all a bit of a mystery to me but about a year ago when I was havin' a few niggling problems that made my IE crash and do wierd things, I contacted microsoft customer support.
The bloke who replied told me to try this...
I would like you to run the System File Checker to replace any missing or corrupted files that might be causing this issue to happen. Please follow the steps below:
1. Click on Start then Run
2. Type in sfc /scannow and hit OK
Note that there is a space after the sfc and you will be required to insert Windows XP cd to CDROM.
After I did this, everything started workin' properly again, 'cept for the occasional glitch which is prolly normal anyway.
Its worth a try.
cjburr 11th January 2006, 04:10 Thanks Gronk, I'll try anything at this point. Bert I believe you are correct , I don't think you can copy the config file. I did however find this link that explains every entry in the config file and what they do. http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config_entries
I checked everything in my file but I'm not sure yet what controls the animation for the smilies or what the thumbnails I cannot view are exactly.
Perhaps the more puter savvy people could look at this link and perhaps give me a clue as to what to look for.
Going to try Gronks idea now, wish me luck.
bubbahog 11th January 2006, 04:56 cjburr:
Are you running any extensions on Firefox? There are some extensions that allow running animated gif files once, vs. over and over (which smileys are, and do).
Also, there is a preference to allow viewing/downloading of images from the original site only - if that is checked, it might be stopping you from viewing the thumbnails, although I don't know why. Just a thought.
cjburr 11th January 2006, 05:22 Hey Bubba, no that is not checked. I have downloaded a few extensions, the latest flash plugin (for jimmyheadgear thank you for your help jimmy). Ran Gronks suggestion and still cannot install IE. Have got my FF running O.K. except for the thumbnails and gifs. Will keep searching for the answer its got to be somewhere.
Thanks again everyone, keep the suggestions rolling in we'll whip this thing yet.:clap :clap nonclapping claps for me:(
Mrprez 11th January 2006, 10:25 Have you checked: Tools/Options/Content/check box for load images and uncheck box for load images for the originated website only.
Is this happening on all websites or only this one?
John
cjburr 11th January 2006, 22:49 Thanks Mrprez, that box for load images from original website is not checked.
thatbikerguy 12th January 2006, 00:03 save a copy of your bookmarks
To save your Firefox bookmarks click on Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks > File > Export.
Your bookmarks will be saved to a file called bookmarks.html which you can then import into IE or Firefox.
:doh Wish i'd done that!!!:doh :doh :frownthre
VisualFeast 30th November 2006, 08:09 If you are always checking the weather like I am, this extension for Firefox is *awesome* -- it always shows the weather at the bottom, and you can hover & click to see more detail, radars, etc. instantly.
http://forecastfox.mozdev.org/
(when installing, "code" means "zip code" btw. :) )
It's fully customizable too... I set mine to show 2 extra days under 'extended forcast.'
milkacow 19th July 2007, 21:33 I have heard good things about Firefox and followed the instructions in this post to install and customize. It works great. But, I can't get the live bookmarks to load. I have tried a couple of ways but keep getting a failed to load line. Any ideas?
Just a quick tip to do this for any website in firefox:
Look in the address bar, which now reads xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/ *etc... and look at the very end of that input box, you will see an orange square with a circle and two 1/4 circles. click that once.
Depending on the website, you will either be given a drop down menu, to pick an RSS feed, or if there is only one, the page will reload (kind of) and you will then be given an option at the top of the page to subscribe using Live Bookmarks, Click the subscribe now button, and you should be done. No typing, no fuss.
When using firefox, any website you see that orange square icon, you can load that to a live bookmark.
