mid30 16th November 2008, 15:38 1st off get a Service Manual. It will have a maint. schedule in it. at 20,000 mine lists all the 5000 mile stuff and also change fork oil and lubercate steering head bearings.
John03XL883 16th November 2008, 15:48 I know i need to get one but have not had the chance was just wondering. ps so whats all listed in the 5000 mile service:D
mid30 16th November 2008, 15:52 it is a half page of stuff including changing spark plugs, change oil, inspect air filter inspect idle speed inspect baterie Allot of inspect stuff. Two much typing to add it all here. I picked up my service manual online for about $30.00. It is defently worth it if you are going to wrench on your own bike. Buy a good set of tools, Dont purchas cheap stuff as you will strip nut bolts and soforth.
If you are not interested in doing it all your self find a independent mech. They are genuarly cheaper. The one here in town only charged my buddy 200 for the 1000 mile service and the dealer was 400
mid30 16th November 2008, 16:02 let me see if I can scan in the serive page and post it here.
mid30 16th November 2008, 16:22 here you go
*****sorry guys, it's a copyright infringement to post pages from manuals******
SpartanDen 16th November 2008, 16:37 Agree with all. Get a manual and do it yourself. Helped a buddy change oil, filter, primary and adjust primary yesterday. He said he could look at a book all day long and never come up with what we did. And all that was to really do it!!! He was more nervous and apprehensive than anything else. Good tools, service manual, patience, time, and a cold one are pretty much all you need!

:drinkbeerOnly one, or maybe two, cold ones WHILE you are doing the service... Remember, fine motor skills are the first to go when the blood alcohol starts getting high...
I think that the MOM (Motorcycle Operators Manual) also has the service item checklist... But I seem to have misplaced my MOM :wonderlan, so I can't verify this... :(

Good answer.
Get the HD manual, it will help you do everthing correctly. You'll save the price of the manual on your first hour of labor. My 2¢.
John03XL883 17th November 2008, 23:11 thanks for all the input
ZEN ROTTI 25th January 2009, 00:40 How does everyone feel about the Fix My Hog DVD's they range from 43$ to 20$ on Amazon and Ebay? Or is it still better to just get the manuel?:wonderlan

toplea 20th May 2009, 00:33 I'm doing my 20K overhaul soon as well. No problem with plugs/wires, oil and the like- but will changing the primary/tranny oil be a shock to the system that is...well...permanently bad if it was poorly maintained before I got it?
