I stopped by the Harley dealer on the way home from work this morning (no doubt looking for another hot chick to buy me lunch:p ) and there was 2 guys there one was buying a Street Bob and was waiting for all the dealer stuff to be completed. Anyhow he was looking at the bike and said to the other guy "one of the first things I am going to do is take off these reflectors, all you have to do is heat them with a hair dryer and pull them off" Ok here's the stupid part, the other guys says "dude you don't want to do that, it'll void your warranty... "
Time for bed...

hmmm, I always heard that it made one cylinder run way hotter than the other and that it caused your timing to be off by about 30* ... are these related...I also heard that the tires would wear out faster but that's just plain crazy talk...that doesn't even make sense :laugh

It's possible I 'spose. But what I'm wanting to know is if you remove the reflectors what kind of oil to you recommend running. I yanked my reflectors a long time ago and stayed with dino juice but some people say that the reduced front end drag concentrates the air mass passing over the forks and toward the engine and thereby in turn causes the air to move faster which ultimately means less cooling. So do you think I should switch to synthetic?

I do know that removing the reflectors on the forks will beat your jeans to death. Something about disturbing the aerodynamics..................
I'm betting that removing the back ones will reduce the contact patch on your rear tire too.

The main problem when you remove reflectors, and I can't believe anyone has not mentioned it yet, is that there is a decreased likelyhood of other traffic seeing you at night which, by the way, is a very dangerous time to be riding a motorcycle anyway.
It will only increase the chances of being involved in a motor vehicle accident. All the other affects are just plain rubbish. Those people are joking with you and if I may say so, a very dangerous joke indeed. They are playing with your personal safety and possibly the safety of others.
Reflectore ARE NO JOKE people. They are on your motorcycle for a reason.

When asked about them, I have my standard answer:
Most of today's reflectors have the main purpose of "reflecting" the air-dam effect of nearby trucks and buses at higher freeway speeds. That way you won't wobble on the road surface. However, you can safely remove them as long as you remember to compensate with anti-counter-steering....

When aproaching a traffic light in the RED phase, I will, at precisely 200 meters before, slow to 10mph and continue at this rate until the light turns green, at which point, I steadily accelerate to to my usual 32mph.

I think the warranty is voided because of a catastrophic chain of events cause by reflector removal.
When you remove your reflectors you mess with the tuning/harmonic properties of the front forks. This usually leads to head bearing failure due to the inharmonic properties that counter the factory settings at the time of build. This can lead to injury or death to the riders.
From what I understand at 3842 rpm some people suffer from severe nausia due to being on the verge of the brown note.
At 3845 rpm...well... lets just say that "the shit hits the fan".

That on works on the standard models. The Street Bob has apes on it.
The point from which the wave begins to the point where it ends is much longer due to the bar height.
Longer wave = More Damage to the bike therefore voiding the warranty.

I understand if one separates the reflectors from the forks using twice-used, day-old dental floss, removes the adhesive residue with Jet A-1, and replaces the air in the tires with orange and black air, the warranty will still be valid. Also, insurance premiums can be reduced if dino is replaced with synthetic after the 1k service, provided the service is performed on an even-numbered Wednesday under the moonlight of a waxing gibbous.

Just my $0.02.
Actually, it's the ODD-numbered Wednesdays. GEESH! With this type of mis-information, we may have to form a congressional task force or subcommittee. Let's get our facts straight before we void someone's warranty.
And while were speaking facts, remember you can't use dino oil in the crankcase and synthetic in the forks. If they mix, it could seize the butterfly valves in your hypercharger.

The spark plug fuses are near that right front reflector, so if you're doing the hair dryer trick to get it off, keep the heat away from the fuses! Ask me how I know...

Tell the reflector story to all the riders that have cars turn IN FRONT OF THEM!!!! Freaking cagers can't see a halogen headlight, what makes you think a reflector will be a lifesaver?????
Pirate
So so true. I just remeoved them from my bike and my wife gave me a load of shit for it. I asked her if she could ever recall seeing a reflector on a bike at night. Answer: NO.

I always thought that removing the reflectors is what caused bearing skate

removing the reflectors will redirect the signal from our alien overlords! Take them off quick!!! I suggest tangled fishing line and goo-gone for the residue. just be sure to wear a foil beanie and do it when Haliey's comet passes over to not void the warranty. seriously the year or 2 year warranty is a joke anyway. look cars now have 100k or 10 year warranties. besides nothing will happen in 2 years anyway so dont worry about it. Just remember the H-D brand Foil Beanie!!

This thread reminds me a little of the self professed custom builder a month or so ago with none of the flames. Having said that can I convert my Sporty to gear driven cams or do I have to send my Caddy's after you! LOL (If that sounds wierd you missed the earlier posts) Matt

Hi all.
Ok, it will not void your warranty, But it may effect you Insurance.
Picture this....
Your riding home one night, no reflectors, but all your lights on, wearing your black leathers.
Your going down a four lane road, in the slow lane, when the car next to you decides they need to make a left turn, so they make a lane change into you and run into you.
And of course wile you are being scrapped up off the pavement, they saying to the cops that they just didn't see you.
At some point, if the cops don't note it, the Insurance adjusters will look for these FEDERALLY MANDATED SAFETY DEVICES ARE IN PLACE.
Once they find that they have bean removed, they will decide how much of thus accident is your fault, you can find yourself being told that it is mutual fault, and they will not pay to fix your bike, or your medical.
Good luck in court fighting that, the fact is, you removed a safety device, and federal crime, and the courts don't like that.
I don't like the looks of mine, but as long as I ride on the street, they will remain in place.

If you want to see how well reflectors actually work take a picture of your bike at night with flash. It's kind of hard to be cool when you're dead.

you know that reflectors attract bugs.
I took mine off and now never have any bug problems.
The synthetic teflon should only be used with a digital analog, counter reversed, spiral fluted, spinny thing in the front otherwise you are asking for problems.

The whole point of the post was not whether the are safe or not, it was that the guy thought it would void the warranty.
