I posted this info on another forum a while back, I thought it might help some one here also so I thought I would add it here too...
I am wondering if anyone out there has had any of there elc fuel pumps crap out?, I was out today and when I came back from the store to fire it up, the pump did not prime (just made a faint click). The bike only has about 5000km on it but I did run the tank dry 2 times myself. The pump always did make diffrent/inconsistent sounds priming. Anyone know if the pump is rebuildable or is it time for a new one?...
Ok, so here is some info that might interest x1 or all Buell owners. I took the pump out and seen that inside the pump pre filter was a bunch of loose crap, wondering what it was I tore off the pre filter and a there what look to be something that disnintegrated inside of it (the out side of the pump pre filter was in perfect shape), kind looks like small bits of rotted paper?, foam, or something else?, basicly looks like a tea bag. Now this bike was sitting with a low tank of fuel for a while so I don't know if this might of helped this problem happen. Just recently when I was gunning the bike it started to gargle, hesitate, die off at higher rpm. I did notice from the time I bought this bike (bought new as demo, 1500km) that the fuel pump always did sound weird at times, not consistant sounding in priming. I am off to see the dealer to find out what the deal is with this. Besides jaming up or slowing down the fuel pump, I wonder if this debree could cause the engine to lean out.

Ok I went to the dealer today and they seemed a bit shocked when I showed them this thing, I also cut the old fuel filter apart and seen that the stuff that did go though the pump got mashed into a very fine powder which could for sure plug up the filter faster. The dealer checked and seen that the pump pre filter part # for all the bikes (xb inc) is the same # and there are no other options listed. This weekend I am going to take my 01 bike tank pump out too to see if it has the same condition. At least its easy to do 1/2 hour max for me. I bought some airless paint unit metal screen filters that I want to replace the pump pre filter with, just have to mod them to fit.
here is what the inside of the old fuel filter looked like, you can see the gunk on part of the filter can.

FYI, the fuel pump is a Walbro unit #521 19099-1b simular to this one http://www.fuel-pumps.net/521.html I have also been told that some fuels/gas could cause the filter to come apart depending on what additives the gas may have in it.
Also I have noticed something that kind of bugs me about the tank safety Vent Valve. It uses a metal ball that rolls around in it's own container. After riding the bike and shuting it off, I at times hear a pressure or suction noise coming from the end of the vent line. At times it seems as if the line is blocked when I try to blow in it, as if the check ball is stuck to the side. At times when I go to refill the bike with gas and take the cap off I get a suction noise from when I take the cap off.
I feel that the way this safety vent valve is designed could cause problems with hard running of the bike, if the bike is leaned over in a corner or braked very hard or excellerated very hard (wheelied), this can make the "check ball" in it's design to move out of center (off of the post) and cause a vacuum in the tank which imo could make the fuel pump labor harder. What I have done is cut off the bottom of the vent valve, remove the ball, post, spring and reglued (jb weld) the bottom back on to the vent valve. This mod makes the vent valve work the same way as most all automotive paint spray guns which have a vented plastic cap between the paint cup and lid.

I think this is something for guys/girls to keep an eye on. When I took apart the 00's vent valve, the metal ball had corrosion on it but the 01's did not. I have also learned that there was an issue with the 99X1 version vent valve which makes me wonder about 00/01/02 being they are basicly the same bike.
