View Full Version : [SOLVED] - No brake light mmbsr 3rd September 2006, 16:20 1992 XLH1200. Brake light does not work when I squeeze front brake lever. i can't seem to locate any sort of switch. Ideas? Help? bplinson 3rd September 2006, 16:24 Does it not work with either lever? There are two switches. One is inside the throttle front controls and the other is on the rear brake line underneather the battery. First check the bulb and insure the filiment is not broken. Next check your fuses. I dunno where the fuses are on a '92 but on an '02 they are behind the triangular plate which is located behind the battery. mmbsr 3rd September 2006, 16:29 yep, checked bulb first. Brake light works fine when I use use rear brake pedal. Fuses are good, too. The Haynes manual wasn't much help either. The master cylinder they show for my year doesn't have the switch they are showing in their illustration. mmbsr 3rd September 2006, 16:33 appreciate your reply...i'm going to go dig around some more. Thx, Mike bplinson 3rd September 2006, 16:46 The front switch can be found inside the front throttle control. Usually the switch comes out when applying the brake so it sounds like yours is stuck in. Matt 3rd September 2006, 17:11 Personally I like having a rear brake light only. That way I can stop hard w the front and pulse the rear brake to alert cagers behind me. I've got a '92 Hugger and had the same issue... My front brake handle didn't work the brake light and it ended up being the broken switch Bert was talking about in the handle assembly by your throttle. Sometimes (if you're lucky), the switch is just not seated correctly but since it's plastic, it's usually broken. Quite often, people will accidently pinch (and break) the switch arm when they're working on the throttle or installing new grips. It's an easy item to mess up and that's what happened with mine. I had the switch replaced while the wrenches at my indy were doing the 20K mile servicing. I think the actual part cost around $25. - - - Ride safe... With fists in the wind.... :tour J.W. mmbsr 3rd September 2006, 20:53 well, i just pulled the throttle assembly apart and it appears there's no switch at all in there for the front brake. There is a vacant hole in the side of the throttle body assembly which I'm going to assume a plunger passed through to mate with the contact in the master cylinder housing, am I right? The switch itself would sit in the throttle assembly, correct? Ok, so atleast I now no what the issue is...can't get it inspected without both working. Thanks! jwbradbury 3rd September 2006, 23:56 If you don't have the H-D service manual for your bike, you might just have you local H-D shop or your indy do the fix. It's a very common problem and doesn't take that long for them to do the fix. Just keep it in mind if your decide to replace the grips... that's often the time that the switch becomes misaligned and will break.
