View Full Version : The World's Fastest Buell - 217.9mph

5th September 2006, 12:48
Greetings from my hotel room in Wendover, NV. NRHS is here for the International Motorcycle Speed Trials by Bub (http://www.speedtrialsbybub.com). It's an all-motorcycle event on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

I have been pretty quiet lately because for the past several weeks I've been working about 25 hours a day, between my two jobs and getting ready for Bonneville. My main bike, which already held the World's Fastest Buell title with a record speed of 205.642, got set up for nitromethane this year. It's been a hell of a learning curve. I first fired it up on the nitro just over a week ago, and since then I've been trying my damndest to get my arms around the tune and figure out this nitro stuff.

Well, yesterday all the work paid off as we cranked off a pass at 217.9mph!. XLTimbo was again doing the riding duties for us, he's also an XL Forum member. This betters our previous best single pass by about 10mph!

Unfortunately, right after we made our pass, some bad weather moved in, and we were unable to make a backup pass. Since backup passes under AMA rules have to be made the same day, the pass won't count towards a record. Still, it was exciting to crank off that number.

We're in the lead for fastest US V-Twin ($1,000) and we're only 3mph away from being the fastest sit-on motorcycle ($5,000), currently held by a turbocharged Hayabusa. We may just have to tip the jug a bit and go for it, we'll look at a few things and then decide.

My apologies to everyone who's tried to reach me for the past few weeks. I know my PM inbox is full. I just haven't had the bandwidth to do anything else. Please be patient with me for a little while yet, until I get home and on top of things.

I'll post many pics when I get some more time. There's an awful lot of really interesting bikes here, of all brands. Lots and lots of fast Sportsters too.

Thanks everyone!

Yes, it's been a LOT of hard work, and nitro is some weird stuff. I had one difficult learning curve but I managed to get through it, or hopefully much of it, without hurting the motor. Torched about a dozen spark plugs is all! The stuff tells you when you're going the wrong way.

Yesterday we ran 212 on the qualifying pass and 213 on the backup. Conditions were not as good. Such is Bonneville.

The 'busa boys raised the stakes to 236 at the same time. They had been having handling problems, sounds like they're getting their arms around them.

Not sure what we'll do today, now that we have the record in the books. We could put the bike on gasoline and go for that, or we could raise the nitro percentage and see how fast this thing will go (putting coinsiderably more risk on the motor). Or, we have another race bike sitting here ready to go, a Buell S1 on nitrous with over 170hp on tap. This bike already holds a couple records in the 167mph range that were done on gasoline with no nitrous, and I've never run it on the nitrous, but the math says it should be good for 180 or so. Decisions, decisions. We need to take a closer look at the orange bike to see what shape it's in, if it's hurt at all that will make the decision for us.

There was also some high drama yesterday in the shootout for the World's Fastest Motorcycle. Ack Attack had set the record the day prior at 342. Chris Carr (the flat tracker) riding Denis Manning's streamliner (Denis is "Bub" of pipe making fame, Bub is his nickname and an acronym for "Big Ugly Bastard") qualified at an astounding 354mph, and backed it up for a 350 average. Impressive stuff.

Lots of famous folks here. Jerry Branch has spent a bunch of time in our pit, wow what an interesting guy. I hope I'm in half the shape he's in when I'm 84! Really doubt I'll even make it that far though. Matt Hotch has one hell of an impressive tow rig, let me tell you. Many, many others.

The world's fastest motorcycle. This was after the record runs, but these guys were not celebrating. They were hard at work getting ready to defend. I guess they blistered a tire, they had a spare but not the machine needed to mount it, so someone took it to SLC.

Thanks again everyone!

We had something of an uneventful day today. We tore down the bike in impound to put the 213 record into the books. Then we put it back together, got onto the course late in the day, only to have an issue.

That's more or less the nature of racing though. You have days you can do no wrong, but most days are hard work and little return. I have no complaints, I've been blessed with many successful days, and this is part of the game.

Tomorrow is the last day and we'll probably make one more pass is all. We're extremely happy with the way things went and we exceeded our expectations coming in.

We were so busy working for most of the day that I took very few pictures, but here they are ...

http://www.nrhsperformance.com/pictures/ackwaiting.jpg
Ack attack wants the world's fastest title back, after they lost it yesterday to Bub's. But infortunately for them, they never got a pass in today. The winds were above the safe-for-streamliners threshold. They waited patiently at the zsero mile though, and I snapped this pic late in the day when we went down there for our pass.

http://www.nrhsperformance.com/pictures/samtornup.jpg
This is the Easy Hook streamliner of Sam Wheeler. He's the other "big gun" going for the overall motorcycle record. Sam is doing it with a fraction of the power of the Ack Attack or Bub's though. Anyway, Sam showed up today, made a pass at 355mph which is the world's fastest ever recorded time for a motorcycle, but he blew a tire on that pass and put the liner on it's side as you can see. Those speeds are really tough on tires. Sam's streamliner was a Cal Tech research project, it's so slippery that he goes those speeds on a single 1350cc turbocharged motor. Ack has a pair of turbo'ed Hatabusa motors making in excess of 900hp and Bub of course has his own custom V4 which is turbocharged and I'm sure also making a mountain of power.

http://www.nrhsperformance.com/pictures/rootbuellright.jpg
This is one of Brian Klock's (Klockwerks) creations, called the "Root Buell". I took a little more usual interest in this one than most because I built the motor. It's an 88 incher. I was talking with him about it, and he said he put it on the dyno, ran it to only 5000rpm, and it made 108hp, so he was happy with that and rolled it off. Sheesh. That motor ought to be power peaking at about 7000rpm according to my calculator.

Okay, last report ...

We made a last pass but the same thing that bit us the day before happened again. I think we've got a handle on it though, and nothing's hurt, so it's not a big deal. Another nitro learning curve thing, that's all I want to say. I'm doing some dyno time over the weekend, testing a fix, and plan to be out there next week for World of Speed.

Aaron's ability to build and tune never ceases to AMAZE me. He is the BEST! To do what he has done over the years...consistently getting world record results again and again...with different bikes, motors and fuels is nothing short of astonishing.

Nitromethane is not trivial, and once again Aaron nailed it!

Well, I'm back home now. Not our best race ever. It started out good, I took the first ride on the bike and got this:

http://www.nrhsperformance.com/pictures/206timeslip.jpg

The bike is a monster on nitro. Scary power right from idle to redline. Just pulls like a freight train, you have to really watch it and fear the throttle. So I took it up through the gears, short shifting and being gentle, until I got into 4th, at which point I wound it out, clicked it into 5th (doing probably 180-190 at that point), pinned the throttle and hung on. Nothing to it, collected the time slip and put the bike in impound. Got to set a record above 205 to collect the 200 club red hat like Timbo has.

We flushed the fuel system, changed the oil (mandatory after every nitro pass) and the next morning we refueled it and took it to the line for the backup pass. The same scenario repeated itself, I went as smoothly as I could through the lower gears, trying to keep that monster from throwing me off, wound it up in 4th, pulled in the clutch and pulled it firmly into 5th, let out the clutch and rolled on the throttle, and ...

nothing.

It was like I had hit the kill switch. No noises, no explosion, no smoke, and no forward thrust either.

When we got it in the trailer and dropped the side bodywork, I could see the timing rotor wasn't spinning when I cranked the motor. Uh-oh, this looks serious.

Pulled the cam cover and this fell out:

http://www.nrhsperformance.com/pictures/pinion.jpg
This is the end of the pinion shaft. For those of you who haven't been in your cam box, one of those gears runs the oil pump and the other one runs the valvetrain, to which the ignition pickup is connected. The motor runs much better with a oil pump, valvetrain, and ignition. Damn hard to set a world record or collect a red hat without those things.

Damn. I was 30 seconds from having the hat.

I called the shop and got the parts coming. I'll do my best to fix it before the final event of the season which is next month. So there's still a chance.

We've had many successful days at the salt flats and set many records over the years. And I came away from this event with my personal best time slip ever. I can't complain too much. Well be back.

The nitro is fun stuff. It took us to the next level, that's for sure. I've learned much about it and there's much more to learn. We're not getting everything out of it and we don't yet know how hard we can push it and how to set things up to make it live the best it can. So I look forward to higher speeds in the future. Timbo went 217 on the bike last week and I'm reasonably sure it'll eventually take us above 220 and possibly above 230. Just gotta get my arms around it and learn how to get everying out of it. But it sure looks promising so far!

Narley

Pinion gear, killed my season too...hmmmmm.
What a thrill it must have been to inch that clutch out and roll on at that speed...any wobbles?

XLTimbo
16th September 2006, 05:43
Well I guess it was our turn to endure some heartache.

We have had such great success in the past that I guess it's unrealistic to expect it everytime, and now we know the flipside, intimately.

I know Aaron must have felt like he got gut punched when the motor let loose. Heck, it made me feel sick. But I also know, first hand, that Aaron is not a quitter. He showed all the determination in the world trying to get the S1 back into race form once we discovered the cause of it's power loss. And that was after the emotional/physical gut punch from the pinion shaft on the S2. In the end the weather took over and turned the salt flats into a shallow lake, but that's the only thing that stopped us.

Jim, the Bennett's only ran PS at the BUB Event. They probably would have run unfaired, had they gotten it sorted out, but they had a few gremlins that bit them.

Narley, No wobbles. That bike is rock solid. Although, occassionally when your at top speed and the ass end breaks loose for a sec then grabs and the back tire decides it wants to be in front of the front tire and you get a little fish tailin' going on...well, that DOES get interesting!

Pinion shaft got me once too. Shifting into 3rd in a final that I was clearly going to win. East St Louis, AMRA Harley drags in 1996. It is a sick feeling to lose all power and coast down the track. I yanked the clutch and hit the kill switch and just made the finish line. Wouldn't wish any bad luck on anyone, but it would have been nice if the other guy broke too and I coasted across first,, hehehe. Saw two nitro bikes break right off the start and both of them pushed the bikes down the quarter mile. Hell, it's still a win as long as you leave the start under power and get there first.
Very good showing on the salt guys.

Hey Aaron and Timbo, looks similar to what happened with the Rocket, huh? Hope you can get it sorted Aaron, you deserve to be in the 200-mph club for sure! Timbo, hope you got my e-mail, glad you are home safe. We'll have to go for a ride sometime soon.

Jim,
Yes, Paul was there and we talked a little. I wasn't able to follow his progress to closely though, I was kinda occupied on my own.
James, how did you know that was Paul's bike? He was classed in M/PF but what displacement? Anyone have his e-mail address? I don't think I've heard from him since '01.

It looked some of the bike parts he had on out there in 03.

nitro-turbo Fe at that time, he brought almost a complete machine which was very useful to us.

Paul Woodman is an amazing guy. He has done the 4-corners tour, which is more ironbutt than the iron butt tour.

Aaron - Timbo : Going to Oct's World Finals?

Wasn't Paul working on some sort of wild streamliner?

What a thrill it must have been to inch that clutch out and roll on at that speed...any wobbles?
i'm curious too, how does it handle?

i've never been to the salt flats, but it appears the salt comes up easily.
are you ever worried about it getting into the carbs?

The salt is like hard packed dirt but less dusty. Because it's a lake bed, there's a lot of moisture in the salt. Very unique place with stunning natural beauty.

Jim: that's the plan. The bike is all apart, parts are on the way, unless something unforseen happens, we'll be there.

Moker: What Crim said. And the salt gets everywhere. Every nook and cranny. Yes some gets sucked through the motor, and we don't use air cleaners. But it doesn't seem to hurt anything. The nitro is causing far more wear than the salt, that's for sure.

October world finals....hmmm
kill several birds at once...get the bike to the guys at nrhs for some tuning after the event....pick it up later as our riding is over by then...run it on the salt myself ,I have heard there is a 150mph group....where is this race?

Thanks to NRHS for the great info and pics!!! Dunno much about nitro myself but wow a week to try to get a handle on it - that's impressive. Stripbike has a Nitro 101 forum that Jim McClure used to post on ... too bad some of the old archives aren't still there. There a lot of fodder out there but some decent info it seems. They mention AFR's in the range of 4:1 on nitro or even lower vs. normal gas being around 14:1 ... crazy stuff!

Sure NRHS already know this but in anycase at those speeds too Aero Cd or Cda is just as important as HP. SportsRider has some interesting articles at sportsrider.com/0610 - the latest issue and June '01 issue. They've got some interesting grids with est. hp needed for 200mph and 220mph vs the Cd and Cda. Of particular interest is their coverage of a Hayabusa and a modified 'busa with significantly lower Cda. The modified 'busa needs about 21 percent less HP than a stock 'busa to go 200mph! 156hp vs an estimated 196.3hp! The modified 'busa's Cda was 2.61 / Cd was .400... wonder how the Buell compares.... Should see if Eric would provide some XBRR body work seeing as all the testing they did down at Texas A&M or maybe the Cd / Cda figures ;)

Actually our bodywork is more aerdynamic than an XBRR. Our body is based on the original Buell RR1000 which to this date is still the most aerodynamic production motorcycle ever.

Are you talking about just Buells or all motorcycles? So does that mean you are saying more aeroodynamic than a hyabusa?

Have you ever looked closely at an RR1000? They make a Hyabusa look like a cinder block. (OK, I'm exaggerating a bit.)

Yup CB .... that's most aerodynamic production MC ever.... not just the most aero Buell

:) Ok, inquiring minds want to know - what are the Cd and Cda? Why didn't Eric use similar body work from the RR for the XBRR? That's curious.

XBRR bodywork was developed in wind tunnel as was the RR stuff.

Narley,150 club is only at USFRA meet in sept. But it costs about the same and the requirements for bike prep are the same as running for a record. So just run in a class, get as many runs in as you can, have a blast.Pay attention to the rulebook and especially the "all leather" leathers rule.

I quickly did some reading and noted the 150 class doesnt allow nitrous, so that was out.
Got the vanson one piece so leathers are covered.

This is Timbo and me, after setting the 213 record at the Bub meet. It's in the current issue of Ironworks. They have a nice article on the Bennetts' effort and they gave us a mention.

I dunno if anyone is posting this under any other heading on these forums ? But here is NEWs about Aaron and Susan's attack of the Bonneville Salt 2007 !
__________________________________________________ _________

Aaron has one bike in impound, Susan rode it to a new record.

Aaron rode the nitro bike and qualified, but didn't have time to turn it around.

Salt conditions are marginal.

Suzy was up against a 146 record in 1350 MPG and ran a 158 in mush. Parasite weight was added to stop wheel-spin-run-rampant and she backed it up with a 150 into a 21 MPH headwind. The bike likely has 160 in it.

Aaron crusied to a 204, well short of what he's run before, and has parked the bike waiting for the salt to improve.

***End of the day report just in . . . got in the line at 0700 and ran at 1530, that gives you a sense of the crowd.

Well Susan Wilson, on a unfaired 1350cc Buell, waxed a GXRR1100 (who ran low 150's WITH a fairing) and one of the fancy new Concours with that 1400cc motor . . in fact, Suzy made famed Valerie Thompson (of Go-Daddy fame) look slow in comparison. This is serious speed.

On a mushy course Suzy banged out a 163, backed it up with a 159, generally made trash of the old 146 record, and claimed it at 161.

Suzy, running in the 1350MPG class is currently outrunning the folks in 2000MPG . . there's a lot to be said for being aerodynamic.

Aaron has the Fastest American Twin (it looks like at this point) in the bag but won't take the Buell S-2 back out until Wednesday when conditions are hoped to be improved.
