I am going to start a build early next year code named Project Delphi. It is going to be very trick, but I don't have everything planned yet. I have not decided the color combo or several little details. So far here is what I have planned:

The cases are going to come from Cruel Intentions. I'm using these so I can run an electronic speedometer and have the better cam-oiling design. I will have them split and cleaned and put new seals, bearings and cylinder studs in them, and if it can be done reasonably I will have the bolt holes for the pushrod covers filled, redrilled and retapped to use XB pushrod covers. The crank will be from an '07 Sportster; the shaft will be modified to fit in the earlier cases and the wheels will be knife-edged. I will weld in a crank positioning sensor (CKP) in the cases because the bike will have Delphi EFI from an '07-up sportster. The rest of the build on the motor will include .536 cams, NRHS 1250 with 11:1 CR and 15* squish, stage II XB heads and rockerboxes, bored throttle body and polished intake manifold from sporty, Crossroads MaliAir air cleaner and Early style Force pipe fitted with O2 sensors.

The wheels, sprocket and all three rotors will be from a Ducati 999, and front calipers will be 6-pot radials from an '07 Yamaha R1. Front forks will be stock WP ROMAS with Racetech springs, rear shock will be a Penske. I'm thinking about a JMC swingarm. I haven't thought much more as of yet. Any ideas?

Geeze - :dunno what else to say... Sounds like an aweful lot of work (...money and time) JUST for an engine. But if your capable, and it's your thing- go for it. I, although would love to know, don't have a clue how to accomplish 1/2 of what your talking about... but know enough that if YOU can't do it yourself that you'll have close to $10K into the engine by the time it's done (case splitting, bearing/race removal & installs, etc...). Labor's a B!eotch now-a-days- unless you've got some really nice friends that owe you some pretty big favors. Again- I commend your talent- weather it be hand's-on skills OR deep pockets. One thing begs to be questioned- what's wrong with the drivetrain in it's current form?
Sounds like you've got one helleva stock of high-end parts laying around: rotors/brakes, Marchensi (sp?) wheels, high-end suspension... NICE. I could DEFINITELY make a killer ride out of that stuff. Personally- I think your going to be forced into using a wider swingarm to clear that wheel out back. My thoughts also dictate that you SHOULDN'T be using a stock frame with all these trick components!!! IMO- you need to look for a frame with a steep(er) rake- 30*(?) and either have it be a rigid... or go over the top and look into single-sided swingarms!!!
I really think the mis-mash of high-end donor parts on an otherwise stock set-up would look, well... like a parts swap:frownthre- just wouldn't do the final product justice. I think if you not going to go with something so obvious (rigid)... then you need to high-light as many of the complementing parts as possible. For example- incorporating a single sided swingarm AND a mono-shocked frame to a one-off mutated drivetrain would be SUPER TRICK!!! Doubt you'd ever see that again- but I think you get what I'm trying to say.
As for the paint... you've got a LOT of time to think about that one. As long as you know you want it painted- that's a start. It'll change a couple times by the time everything actually makes it to the booth!
Keep this thread alive and POST PIC's!!! We all love to SEE progress...
Good Luck...

Ross, any idea on how much this is going to cost? I'm guessing several thousand total, even with cheap EBay parts. :doh

Vtwinscoot, remember this is all on a Buell, which already has a 25* rake, monoshock under the motor, and a 180 rear tire. Rich, I can pick up all of the electronics, wiring harness, ecu, late controls and race tuner for under $800. If I'm patient, I can pick up the 999 wheels and axles for under $400, less than what I sold my first set of PM Buell wheels for. The efi crank can be had for about $300, then figure about $600 more to knife-edge the flywheels and modify the shaft to fit in the earlier cases. There is a guy on BadWeb whose raceteam has been using XB9 cranks in tuber cases for years now, and they know how to retrofit them. I haven't yet figured out the most cost-effective way to start the project, but the goal is to complete the build under $10K. Keep in mind Thor is basically a ground-up build unless I somehow keep Priscilla and make her a co-donor for the build. The motor will cost about $5K.

Guess I forgot to consider the obvious... but seems to me that most of the work/parts (unfortuneatly) will go unnoticed (to your 'average' person). I'd DEFINITELY call you out on the high-end/non-stock parts but think you need to incorporate something besides a flashy paint job (single sided swingarm?) to set it apart from the crowd. <-- Just my thoughts
I'd like to see progress as it's made... no matter which way it goes - if it becomes reality it'll be a KILLER sleeper!!

At one time I was doing a lot of research and planning to build a single-sided swingarm, grafting a flipped 996 swingarm with a Buell aluminum one and using the 996 wheel and sprocket, but that was before I started for this project. I didn't like the fact that all the Ducati single sided wheels are directional, save the 748/1098 Marchesini wheels, but those are super-pricey (over $1000 each usually). The 999 Marchesinis are aluminum, and much more available, and as I stated earlier I can pick them up for the same cost as Buell wheels. Whichever color scheme I decide on will really set the tone of the custom build, because it will include powdercoatint the frame and wheels, among other pieces. The S2s only came with white frames and the S2Ts came with dark gray frames. Before I decided I'd like to put some 10-spoke Marchesinis on the project, I was planning on using some OEM Buell 3-spoke Marchesinis (only used from '95-'97), having them, the frame, and the spring on the shock powdercoated blood red, and painting the body GunMetal Metallic with some Pearl in the clear. I don't know if I want to keep that color scheme though because I don't think the 10-spokes would look good red. I think they look better silver or gold in color.

No photoshop designs??? I always enjoyed seeing them.

Rich, I would love to make some, but without PC access I can't for now. Maybe Monday I'll find access to a PC and start playin' around for a bit.

I know it's been a while, but here's the latest update on Project Delphi. I have changed a lot of the features that I want and don't want for this build, and I have decided to use my current S2 as the base for the build. The motor and electronics will most likely be the last thing I do to the bike, so you will hear about the other stuff as it happens first.

Some of the stuff I've added to the list of wants: S&S cases, modified S&S crank, Baker 6 speed tranny, FBW throttle, cruise control, heated grips, FUELING 4 VALVE HEADS, one-off intake runners for Fueling heads, dual throttle bodies, 88" conversion, XB inverted front brake rotor on modified Ducati 1098S/848S wheel, custom single sided swingarm with 1098S/848S rear wheel, S2T hardbags and lowers, JC Whitney Top Case with custom mount, carbon fiber bodywork, etc.

More realisticly, it'll look like this: '00-'02 Buell or '00-'03 Sportster cases, stock tranny, lightened crank with teeth cut to match '08-up FLHT crank, Wiring harness/ECM/Handlebar controls from '08-up FLHT (for FBW throttle and Cruise), NRHS 1250 kit, XB heads and rockers kissed with a dremel, '07-up Sporty manifold, '08-up FLHT throttlebody (for FBW throttle), one-off S2 EFI Hurricaneflow A/C, O2 sensor-fitted Buell Race header with custom stainless megacone, SE 536 cams, modified Ducati 749/999 wheels (cast instead of forged), XB inverted front brake, chain conversion, heated grips, S2T hardbags and lowers, JC Whitney Top Case with custom mount, etc.
