I was wondering if it is worth it and how many riders out there have extended warranty? If not why would you not want it? :doh

I don't know but I got a strange phone call the other day from " someone " saying that they were the underwriter for the Harley warranty program. My warranty isn't up until next April. They knew something about me and my bike and wanted 1800 bucks.Scam city!! I'll talk to the dealer this spring.Anyone else have this happen?

I bought the extended warranty. I could afford it at the time so I figured why not? I've had them in the past, only had to use it once, but that one time repair cost me only my $50.00 deductable. Without the extended warranty the repair would have cost me over $3,000.00. It's like any good insurance if you need it.

I haven't ever gotten extended warranty's on anything. They are usually rip off's. But, I would never get one on a sportster. It's a very well established product, has been thoroughly tested, and not likely to have that many expensive problems that I cannot fix on my own for much less than the cost of an extended warranty.

Been riding Harleys since 1973 and never needed it, not once. 35 years X $???.??, you do the math. I never buy extended warranties on anything. My 2¢.

When I had 63K miles on the 05 bike after the 06 riding season, I started thinking about buying the extended warranty. Thinking if I blew the motor, or just wore it out I would be out ahead. I bought the extended warranty in DEC 06 because you couldn't have more than 65K miles on the bike to buy it. 2 years for 600 or 800 I think, at the time the money wasn't that big of a deal. I won't do it again. Less than half has come back in saved repair bills. Litterly the carb housing fell in peices when they went to replace the jet and it wasn't covered. Now what could I have done to the carb to cause it to do that? come on. The front forks leaked, but not bad enough, so I had to go another 20K miles with them leaking. When they were really bad they paid for it. I know the warranty company thought they would deny it and I would fix it because it was needed and they would be off the hook.

Effie is in the shop now because she is weeping oil through about all the gaskets she is blessed with. When I asked they said they would be covered, but its been there a week and I havn't heard a word. I told them to not do anything that wasn't covered by the warranty without my permission. We'll see if they cover this.

Cindy Dietz, what was the result of the warranty repair(s)? Did they cover it?

I bought one, salesman said I'd need it. Next bike, I won't buy one, never used it.

I bought one, salesman said I'd need it.

Salesman also looked Jenn dead in the eye and asked if she "wanted to see the chrome consultant because you gotta decide early if you're going with flames or skullz"

She laughed in his face and said "I don't want any of that crap on my bike."

This applies to extedended insurance.... I mean extended warranties too.

No for me,and it would mean I'd have to wait that much longer for my engine mods.
I don't believe its warranty...but an insurance with a lot of fine print.

I thought about buying the extended warranty when I bought my bike new off the showroom floor. They had some gorgeous blonde chick (Tall and well Endowed) pushing the seven year warranty on me for something like $3500!! Good thing my wife was with me.

I decided against it am I'm glad I did. I had a couple of problems with the bike in the 2 year INCLUDED warranty and they always found an excuse to NOT do the work.

So why would I have wasted my money? Harley (as well as any manufacturer) knows that if anything is going to go wrong, it's a high probability that it's going to go wrong right away. The extended warranties are a CASH GRAB.

My advice, FWIW, would be to get the bike with the two year included warranty and PUT AS MANY MILES ON IT AS YOU CAN IN THE FIRST TWO YEARS (or up to the limit of mileage of the warranty) and leave it bone stock since the stealership will use upgrades done by yourself as an excuse as to why what has gone wrong did go wrong.

I was fortunate - my bike came with an extra 4 months at no addiitonal cost (Thank you for securing that, Highway 101 Harley-Davidson!). Statistically, extended warranties on all products are a very bad deal for the consumer. Like all product insurance policies, they are banking on very few failures and raking in huge profits on that "secure" gamble. If a person put in $50 a month into a savings account, they would almost always be money ahead if and when a problem does occur.

I never buy one on anything.
The standard warranty should get you past any factory defects. If nothing breaks by then the time it expires it's probably got all the bugs worked out.
Extended warrantees are big money makers for the sellers but rarely work out for the buyer.
It's betting against yourself, I'd rather pocket the money and if nothing breaks it STAYS in my pocket. If something breaks then I'll use it toward fixing it.
If you choose to buy an extended warranty on something, be careful of warrantees that PRORATE. Those are simply a coupon toward replacement (that you paid for) from the same seller ensuring they get your business again instead of someone else.

If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't have opted for the extended warranty. Most of the factory problems are solved now. But we'll see since I have a good 4 more years of warranty left.

All the motor work they did. HD replaced every gasket on the motor that she had. Including the inspection cover gasket. They replaced the shifter assembly. Reseated the valves and a bunch of other work to refab the motor. It was all covered by warranty. The only thing that was not covered was the rebuild of the rear brake, which I didn't ask for anyway. I was in a kind spirit that day so I paid the charge. I have a whole rear swingarm assembly I bought off ebay, which has the rear brake. If I had wanted that done, I would have just swapped it out. They said I got $3k worth of motor work done. I made out okay this time but, next time I won't get the extended warranty.

they had her for a month and a half. That was okay, but I bet if it was in the middle of the summer, most of the work would not have been done. They were just bored and needed some thing to do, so they went through her with a fine tooth comb.

I can change my oil, I can do all kinds of things with the electrical, but the motor is foriegn territory for me. They told me but it could have been spanish for all the good that did. Its a couple pages of parts. If I find it I will post it.

I bought a 3 year extended warranty when purchasing my used 2005 XL1200 and would not do it again!
When i had a problem with it running too rich last year was leery of taking it to incompetent H.D.dealer thinking they may blame it on hyper charger air cleaner i installed.
So i paid a performance shop to rejet carb. and dyno tested after finding faulty fuel valve/ petcock was the over rich problem.
Bike runs great now but yes i would not recommend an extend stealership warranty !

Unless it covers anything and everything including user fault they are worthless. I have some for my cameras that cover me dropping it or running it over with the car and have used them several times.

But vehicle warranties blow!

WOW!! How'd you score a deal like that?? That saves a lot of money, having free oil changes for the length of the warranty.

I paid $900 for a 5 year total (including factory, so that's an additional 3 years, correct?) warranty. Lasts until July 26th, 2011. Hit one warranty repair that fell within the 2 year timeframe that would have cost me around $400. I wouldn't be surprised if I hit a few more of those over the next couple of years. Like some others, I felt it was worth it.

I know nothing about my bike. I just about know how to ride. I bought an '07 used from
the dealer and figured with the price I got, buying the extended warranty would also help my resale value down the line when I upgrade; it's transferable. I am NOT one to buy warranties, never bought one in my life and being that I was in retail for almost 20 years I know what the warranty is, its an upsell almost never used and for the most part a waste of $$. But given that I know little to nothing about the bike, don't plan on any engine mods and got a good deal on the bike I went for it.

I've never bought one and didn't when I rolled my 09 off the show room floor. They sure tried to talk me into it and a service program as well, but it was a no go. 90% of the time if something is going to go wrong it will before the 2 years is up. After that it's going to the performance shop for serious upgrades.

Well when i bought my 08 sporty the salesman told me i could buy it but he didn't recommend it. He said the only way it would ever pay for itself is if the motor and tranny both locked up.............. So of course i didn't get it, my factory warranty will be up in september and i have no worries because the bikes are so simple to work on......

That's refreshing. By the way, did you know that Sporty trannies and motors are prone to lockup after three years?

:) not really

Good morning, Last month My friend used to work for harley davidson and I called him to check primary chain and Friend adjusted primary. He checked intake seal by spray to see if leak or not. Yep, it was leak and I asked him, would u replace it for me and He said, call harley davidson to see if I have extended warranty service so I called harley davidson and man wanted my vin number then I ran to get vin # then call ed back to harley davidson and I give my vin # and Yes, it is still under warranty. I was so surprised because last year, I bought used 04 xl sportster 1200c it was only 5k miles on it. Now, it is 16k miles on it. I thanked to my friend. oh by the way, HD said, my extended service plan will expired next 2011. I asked hd, how do i get ESP. HD said, transfered from owner to me. WHEW!! I am glad that i have ESP. We rode my bike alot. I said myself, I wonder could I afford to buy ESP when 2011 arrive. I heard that if you want to buy ESP, be prepare to save money now until 2011. Be honest with you, I think Extened service plan worth because We travel alot on weekend and week like we rode around 500 to 800 miles a weekend. If my bike break down on the road or out of state. HD will take care of it to fix.

Wow, very useful information you guys have provided. I'm gonna be buying an iron in March, and in the back of my mind I've been thinking about this. Now I'm pretty sure I won't be getting the extended plan. Just a copy of the service and parts manuals... Thanks guys.

As most have said extended warranties are ususally worthless. I use to sell cars and learned a few little tricks about them. One thing you can do though is use them as a bargining chip. :) Because they are almost pure profit, dealers usually push them hard and heavy. This means when negotiating the price of the vehicle, find out about the extended warranty. IF you can cancel the warranty with a full refund within three days of purchase (and many of them you can) you can tell the salesman you are interested in the extended warranty but only if they can reduce the price of the vehicle.

Then, after the paperwork is signed, you can cancel the warranty and get your full money back. :) Don't know if Harley extended warranties are set up like this but it would be something to look into. :)

I do not have one on my Sporty...prolly won't.

I do have one on my bagger. Good thing too, the engine grenaded at 50K miles and I got a new one for $50.

I think it all depends on how many miles you ride and how hard you ride.

Even before I got the new engine, the extended warranty had almost paid for itself---and it still had 3 years left on it!

Extended warranties are just insurance policies, and they are in biz to make money. If you are not riding many miles, then they are prolly gonna make $ off you...might be better not to buy one.

If you ride a lot of hard miles, it could very well end up saving you thousands.

As Robotech stated they are a good bargaining chip. I pushed pretty hard on my XL1200R purchase, and as it was a used bike I was interested in some kind of warranty. I ended up with a 3 year thrown in at a total selling price I was happy with. Good luck.
