View Full Version : Exile Cycles Internal Throttle Group Buy
snowman 17th December 2008, 00:35 Talked to Paul Kirk at Exile Cycles and if we get three or more interested in buying this bad boy, they are $179 instead of $199 (+shipping). Let me know if you are interested. :smoke

We manufacture this assembly ourselves and believe it to be the best available. It features bearings instead of bushings for a super smooth action. We use this device on every bike we build - there is simply no excuse for an exposed throttle cable on a custom bike!
We will shoot for a January 15th order date.
Maybe 10 will get us a better discount...:banana:banana:banana

4thesporty 17th December 2008, 01:03 man, if we could wait till January, i'd be in.

I second that!!! Jan.!!:smoke
capttawes 17th December 2008, 01:07 They're cool and I've thought about it but bikes with switches on the bars and internal wired 1" bars (like mine) don't leave enough room I believe to run it. Having the internal throttle and clutch would be sick though. Maybe someday when I have another bike and hardtail this one with a minimalist setup. :)
snowman 17th December 2008, 01:31 We can wait until January if it helps all of us out. How about we go until January 15th and we can place the order then...:geek:geek:geek

I'm in for that! And, thank you for putting in the legwork Russ:):):)
Ireeman 17th December 2008, 01:35 I'm up for it. Jan or feb s perfect. I'll keep and eye here when it get's close.
Coxbow 17th December 2008, 10:58 Great initiative Russ
I'm in !
snowman 17th December 2008, 12:42 I think we are up to five so far. If we grab five more, I'll try to get another $20 off...:smoke
Coxbow 17th December 2008, 13:17 that won't be easy...
jarhead08 17th December 2008, 14:30 How does it install??
Ireeman 17th December 2008, 14:34 You have to cut one inch off your right bar, figure a exit point out of the bars, and run a set screw, through the bars into the grip boss.
capttawes 17th December 2008, 14:35 How does it install??
If I recall, you cut the end of the bars off, insert throttle assembly, drill bars and its held in by set screws.
jarhead08 17th December 2008, 14:55 kewl beans
snowman 17th December 2008, 15:06 You have to cut one inch off your right bar, figure a exit point out of the bars, and run a set screw, through the bars into the grip boss.
Actually you cut almost 4" off the throttle side, install and drill hole for the set screw. If you look at the part, the smaller section goes into the handlebar. The screw holds the part in the bar and your grip goes over the outer slide to work the "magic"...:smoke
oldmule 17th December 2008, 17:15 I'm in for one as well.
I can pay up any time the $ is needed. I'd like to get it done in Jan if possible.
One thing we need to check on is the cable, my understanding is since we will use a single it will need to be about 6" shorter than the ones we have. They may sell the cable as a side thing...... Personally, that's just a minor thing IMO
snowman 17th December 2008, 19:55 I talked to Exile and they will give us a $159 each price if we can do 10 at once.
We'll shoot for that and do it around Jan 15th.:smoke
Here's the deal with the cable:
This assembly will allow you to route your throttle cable through your handlebars. It converts your carburetor to single cable action. Provided the cable is routed smoothly, then S&S, Mikuni, etc., carbs will still snap shut when the throttle is released. The upper end of the throttle cable wire is clamped into the barrel of the assembly and does not need a ferrule on that end. This means that it is very simple to modify one of your existing throttle cables to work with this assembly. Alternatively you can use any other throttle cable, provided one end is compatible with your carburetor and the cable is long enough. We offer an over-length throttle cable kit.
I'm planning on trimming mine...:smoke
Coxbow 17th December 2008, 22:24 Snowman, I'm just thinking about something, you said you'll take the Road6custom bars, are you talking about the apes ? 'cause those bars have an angle close to 90° at the top, and an internal cable can't handle that, well that's what I've heard anyway !
Can somebody confirm this ?
4thesporty 18th December 2008, 00:28 That's a good point, as i have his 16"ers. It seems that somebody would make a cable that is small enough to be flexible, yet still strong enough not to break. I know that my stock cables didn't take much of a bend at all without binding. Time to start the research...:frownthre
bud095 18th December 2008, 00:36 i may be interested,nope cant do it sorry
oldmule 18th December 2008, 03:45 Seems to me it would be easiest to just ask the guys at Exile...... That's the only way I would trust an answer.
daniel dailey 18th December 2008, 18:21 i'm in if we can get em for $159. i'll talk to a few buds and see if i can hook at least one more.
4thesporty 18th December 2008, 18:41 Seems to me it would be easiest to just ask the guys at Exile...... That's the only way I would trust an answer.
Well, its not so much a matter of their product as it is with our bars (z-bars), and finding a cable that can be routed through them (2 90* bends + exit the handlebars) without binding or breaking. That is alot to ask for in a throttle cable. I have looked around and seen some people using piano wire with an adjuster between the carb and where the cable leaves the handlebars. Still looking though. The key is to have the cable the exact lenth, and of course not to break it.:smoke
minuo 18th December 2008, 20:30 Count me in too for the middle of January!
FWIW, their website shows a few bikes (Bar Hopper, Hot Rod, Steamroller, Softail Standard) with decent apes on them. Of course it would depend on your particular bars, but it appears that it can work with apes (maybe not Zs tho).
Coxbow 18th December 2008, 21:03 I think this can work with any type of bars as long as the cable can follow a natural bend, even is we all saw some in magazines that had twisted bars, don't forget those bikes hardly ride...
oldmule 18th December 2008, 22:38 I'm wondering about taking a mtn bike cable housing that has a nylon/kevlar lining and running the piano wire through it. I don't know what exactly is offered for linings on them, but I do know there are some really low drag ones. Worth a try.
G
snowman 18th December 2008, 23:11 Exile offers an extra long cable for $25 and as long as you don't kink the cable, it will work. Exile uses this piece on every bike they build and John Mellencamp's chop has 14" apes...:geek:geek:geek
Coxbow 18th December 2008, 23:23 What about this Russ ?

I'll be checking this maybe tomorrow. I just looked at my 8" ZBars (Road6Customs) and they have 90* bends at the top and the bottom.
I'll take off my throttle cable, slide it into the bars and see how well it works...:geek:geek:geek
S TOWN ROLLER 19th December 2008, 16:25 Has anyone used any other internal throttle assemblies before?
I have no problem spending $160 because I know that their stuff is high quality and built to last. They also use bearings instead of bushings which should roll much smoother and I assume last longer. I was just looking at some others online as a comparison, some that sell for as little as $65. My question is: has anyone used any of these cheaper ones, to attest to their quality? I know it's probably another "you get what you pay for things" but I'd like to know peoples' opinions on the others.
And if it's that much freakin' better, then put me down for one too.

There was a guy commented on that fact in another thread but I think he had buddies who used the cheapies and said they started binding after a while. Metal to metal on some of the under $100 parts without bushings just isn't going to work on a daily ride...:geek:geek:geek

oldmule 19th December 2008, 17:42 Hey Russ,
What is the count at this point? Do we need to PM you to "set in stone" our GB intents? Also, do you guys usually send in PMOs to one person or to the company? This is the first GB on this forum for me and I like to know the working of them. I've been in 30+ GBs and most are run the same..... But, I don't like to be the ars that screws things up for others.
As a side note, kind of a WOW thing. I'm in a GB for AR-15 lowers that started out with a goal of 50 to order. When the guy placed the order it was for 4000 lowers.:wonderlan

The way this will work is I will get with Exile the first week of January and set up the way to place your order with them. We will probably get a few days to get them all in and they will total up the results for the final price.
Way I see it now, we need 4 more to get the $159 price...:geek:geek:geek
I also tried to test the two 90* bends on the ZBars but my cable was too short. The one 90* was no problem, but I'll have a 52" cable next week and will let everyone know the results...:banana:banana:banana

The Exile part (and one other manufacturer) are hands down greatly superior to anything else you will see on eBay. I definately would not touch the cheap ones.

trozenhorse 30th December 2008, 04:53 so for a newbie but little experince doing his own work, is this something i can handle? im pretty handy and have recently started doing small little things on my bike.. I;m into working on my bike and would you believe for xmas my stadd bought me this new full platform lift to make all the work much easier...i really like learning and pretty meticulous when i do things like this. I would be in for the buy but the whole thing is to do it myself. thanks guys.
Coxbow 30th December 2008, 16:05 The wallets are empty with all those presents and stuff…
trozenhorse 31st December 2008, 05:32 ok lets try this again, i want to be in on the group buy, my question is for someone with little bike work experience is this something i can handle doing on my own? i am pretty handy and enjoy working on the bike, have most of the tools, even received a full platform bike lift from my staff for xmas...i take it this will work on a fatboy as well? hope i get some responses...thanks Ted

YES. I would think so. I don't see why you'd have a problem as long as you follow the instructions...The only thing to worry about is making sure you don't cut like 9 inches off the right side of your bars.
Coxbow 1st January 2009, 15:37 I know some of the buyers in this group will put the throttle on asap, (looking in the Snow direction...) and that the "how to" will be explained, so sit back and relax, it will be a piece of cake...
snowman 1st January 2009, 19:59 I will be doing mine as soon as it gets here and will document the install. It really shouldn't be that difficult to do. I also got the longer cable yesterday and ran it thru a set of 10" mini-apes NO PROBLEM!!!!:smoke
Here's a pic:
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj198/snowman3773/DSC03212.jpg?t=1230835977
Any tighter curves and you will probably have to drill the bottom of the bar for the cable to be guided around the second tight corner, like on these bars:
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj198/snowman3773/Road6bars.jpg?t=1230836084
If you are looking at getting a set of these, Seth will install the cable at his shop for you if you are interested. I got the cable installed thru the first bend no problem, but getting around the second would require a guide hole at the bottom of the left downtube, or use the hole to bring the cable out there and down past the trees...:geek:geek:geek
I'll get with Exile next week and get the buy set up.
I'll also send out instructions for ordering to all that are interested...:banana:banana:banana
trozenhorse 2nd January 2009, 06:01 if i am keeping my original bars do i need to purchase a new cable or any extras? ok so my next foolish question, where is the entry point at the bottom, by the risers? i am just a real newbie, dont even know all the terminology yet.

I have those in the 16"ers, so you are saying that you should drill a hole at the bottome of the bars so the cable would not have to make the second 90 degree bend? That would make the install alot easier, as most of my concerns for the install would be with the cable routing.

Exactly!! Or you could use a flatblade screw driver to guide the cable pass that last turn to the center opening in the bottom bar. I used 8 tie-wraps to fasten the cable on the bars where they would make the turns and there was very little binding on the cable movement going thru the sheathing.:geek:geek:geek

dean2d 3rd January 2009, 00:55 I'm not seeing how they work ... I see the allen screw and take it that you said that is how it attaches to the origanal bars but looks like that piece has an end cap so how or where does the cable hook up to it and work?

The throttle cable goes into the small end thru a hole and mounts into a slot on the large part (that your grip goes over). The cable sheath stops at the hole end. The small diameter end is held in place on the handlebars with the setscrew so it does not move, when the larger diameter tube is turned (pulling the wire cable and opening the throttle)...:geek:geek:geek
http://www.exilecycles.com/UserFiles/Image/parts/handlebars/handlebars2.jpg
64physhy 3rd January 2009, 07:48 So, do you have to cut the length of the girp part off the bars, or what?
snowman 3rd January 2009, 15:34 So, do you have to cut the length of the girp part off the bars, or what?
Yes, you cut off about 4". It's the length of the larger diameter tubing on the part. Then the smaller piece slides into the bar and is held in place by the setscrew that goes thru a hole in the bar that you drill. Then your grip goes over the whole piece...:geek:geek:geek

Coxbow 5th January 2009, 22:38 Russ,
Wouldn't it be better that everybody on the list already pays and when the 10th guy payed he's share you order ? otherwise we could be going from 10 to 9 and 9 to 10 all year long !! (this isn't ment for you S TOWN ROLLER, just a thought)
oldmule 5th January 2009, 22:50 Only problem with doing it that way IMO is that we would have to pay the 179 and get a refund when the 10th guy paid. Otherwise, it wouldn't be fair to the company to take 159 for only 9 sales and us say "sorry pal we couldn't get enough".
But, that said. I have no problems paying the 179 up front and picking something else up from them w/ the credit. IE some grips..... It could get messy though....
Coxbow 5th January 2009, 22:54 I was thinking about paying the 159$, us 9, and wait for the 10th !
snowman 5th January 2009, 22:58 I was thinking about paying the 159$, us 9, and wait for the 10th !

I didn't mean that ONE article. I printed THREE of them before I stopped looking at them..... I had to quit scrolling down the page or I would still be there.
Coxbow 6th January 2009, 21:44 know what you mean, I took me 2 days to look at every article that was interesting ! (to me)
kilroykarr 6th January 2009, 21:48 could i use this same setup for the clutch?
Coxbow 6th January 2009, 21:53 could i use this same setup for the clutch?
Well Exile has a clutch kit including this internal throttle system, but since a clutch demands a lot more effort than a throttle you’ll need something to ease that effort, several systems exist, HD has one that’s working pretty well
check on Exile's web site
minuo 6th January 2009, 23:18 Unfortunately I've got to be out for now too, times are tough and an internal throttle just isn't fitting in my budget for this month :(

Exile uses a pulley for the inside of the housing of a BT to assist with the pull effort. No way to do it without one...:geek:geek:geek
snowman 8th January 2009, 19:25 The buy is a go!!! Call Paul Kirk at 818 255 3330 and place your order using Visa, Mastercard or Money order. Paul is tallying all the orders we have up to January 15th. Depending on how many we have, that will determine the final price + shipping to your specific location. His email is paul@exilecycles.com if you'd rather do it that way. If you want to send him a money order, their address is:
Exile Cycles

Make sure you mention the internal throttle group buy for the XL forum, or my name (Russell Nieves)...:smoke
I already placed mine so we're at ONE...:banana:banana:banana
Coxbow 8th January 2009, 20:51 Cool !
How much is it for me ? I suppose that I won't have the same shipping rate...
oldmule 8th January 2009, 23:25 I called and got my info to him...
Two down.
Coxbow, it will depend on how many people end up doing the GB as to price, he is taking info now and won't charge us till the 15th when the GB closes. He should be able to tell you a shipping price though.
Coxbow 8th January 2009, 23:28 Yeah you're right, I'll e-mail them

Paulie420 10th January 2009, 17:28 So Wed 1/14/09 is the last day to order?
Russ, can this be used on a STOCK set of Custom bars? I know you gotta cut and stuff but it would still be nice on a set of stock bars yea??????
snowman 10th January 2009, 17:51 You have to cut off 4" from the right side of the bars (stock is cool) and it only uses one throttle cable. The cable runs inside the bars to the riser clamps. It has needle bearings so the return spring on the carb gives plenty of return strength...:geek:geek:geek
We will probably go thru the end of next week...

snowman 13th January 2009, 15:18 ok lets try this again, i want to be in on the group buy, my question is for someone with little bike work experience is this something i can handle doing on my own? i am pretty handy and enjoy working on the bike, have most of the tools, even received a full platform bike lift from my staff for xmas...i take it this will work on a fatboy as well? hope i get some responses...thanks Ted
Yes and Yes...
if i am keeping my original bars do i need to purchase a new cable or any extras? ok so my next foolish question, where is the entry point at the bottom, by the risers? i am just a real newbie, dont even know all the terminology yet.
You may be able to cut down one of your original cables. Entry point can be between the risers.
Hope this helps...:geek:geek:geek
