View Full Version : Speedway Instruments - Re-Newed bike
jgaither 19th December 2008, 17:14 These are the first public photo's of my re-New'd 2004 1200XL
As you can see I went to 16" Burly apes, V&H short shots, 10.5" progressives, new mustang seat, and Kuryakyn air cleaner. The Duece wheel has been on a while. The Southern Metal Chopper paint job is better in person than the photo's. And lastly the microSpeed Speedometer by Speedway Instruments.

NRHS Sales 19th December 2008, 17:18 I like everything about that bike except the apes. the apes just look wrong IMO.
superwarden 19th December 2008, 17:20 I think I would have to agree with that..
emzdogz 19th December 2008, 17:42 I like it! rare to see a big tank bike with the bobbed rear and I think it looks really great. The view from behind is fantastic.
I would pretty much agree on the apes...but then again if the peron who is to ride this bike likes apes for comfort reasons (and I hear those people do exist!) then what the heck!
:)
Nice!
would love to see a full on side shot.
bucchi_online 19th December 2008, 17:45 I also like everything about that bike.
I never drived a bike with an ape hanger like that, i had to try if its feel good to say if its something for me. But the look is great
loki03xlh 19th December 2008, 18:04 Nice bike!
Love the apes with the bobbed fender.
Only thing I would do differently is chrome apes. But then again I'm a poser!
mrlowlight 19th December 2008, 18:17 Nice looking bike, love the speedo and the big tank with the shorty guard...the apes not for me, but then I've had them in the past.
MonkeyMouse 19th December 2008, 18:57 Nice bike man, I like everything about it! Im not a fan of apes and wouldn't put them on my bike, but they sure do look killer on there! Since when does speedway make that mini speedo??!!! Ive only ever heard of the micro tach, I want that speedo! I just checked the site and still cant find it?...
jgaither 19th December 2008, 23:22 So I forgot to mention. the microSpeed will start shipping in Febuary or March. It will be in the 2009 Kuryakyn catalog and available from any of their dealers or online on our website.
I haven't updated the webpage yet but will likely start pre-orders in January.
Thanks for feedback on the bike. I only rode one other bike with apes before I did these. Apes are one of those polarizing features. Either you like them or you don't. I like them. I would never want them on a long ride. But I rarely ride anymore than 25miles at a time. But I ride nearly everyday.
Thanks and I'll keep you posted.
Justin
Texassporty06 20th December 2008, 01:42 I love it!! Apes and all. What size Apes are they ? "1-1/4 ?
MonkeyMouse 20th December 2008, 03:47 Do you mind disclosing price on the micro speedo? Also will it just be plug into the usb on the new computers orrrr? Have an odometer?
jgaither 21st December 2008, 21:37 I love it!! Apes and all. What size Apes are they ? "1-1/4 ?
The apes are burly 16" narrow apes. The are standard 1" diameter.
Thanks
jgaither 21st December 2008, 21:40 Do you mind disclosing price on the micro speedo? Also will it just be plug into the usb on the new computers orrrr? Have an odometer?
It will be significantly lesS than other speedometers on market. But more than china made. It has a very easy to use on screen interface. And uses a patent pending touch screen interface. It does not plug into the USB of a computer.
Thank you for your interests

crospo 21st December 2008, 21:49 Now thats fantastic news! Been waiting for a micro speedo.Oh great looking machine too.
The guy with the 883C 21st December 2008, 22:36 I think MonkeyMouse meant to ask does it plug into the bike computer.
Since the fabulous tach Justin makes does just that, I would presume that the new speedo is plug and play also.
MonkeyMouse 21st December 2008, 23:26 Yeah, thats what I meant, is it a simple plug and play deal? Can you adjust the OD so that it retains the millage on your bike?

hi Justin,
able to know the costing of the speedo??
Many Thanks...
pat

:tour Already asked about cost lol.
jgaither 24th December 2008, 01:45 Cost will be $229
There is not a full odometer feature which would maintain total miles. There is only 2 trip odometers to keep track of Fuel and Oil miles.
Thanks everyone for your interest and I will keep you all posted as things progress,
Justin

MonkeyMouse 24th December 2008, 05:14 Hmm I think no OD is the deciding point for me unfortunitly. :( I really like that spedo too.

Why do you need an odometer?
I just couldn't figure out a good way to display 6 digits on the 3 digit display.
I always appreciate feedback good or bad.
Thanks
Justin
Brad 25th December 2008, 02:39 I'd like an Odo too. Not exactly sure why, not like I'm giving up my Sporty, but I still want one. (Maybe... Gonna give it some thought!)
MonkeyMouse 25th December 2008, 06:14 I guess I don't need one, but I'd surly like to be able to keep track easily how many miles are on my bike. Plus if I'm to ever sell it for tittle purposes its kinda needed. I don no, I guess I have no good reason for it but its for one reason or another it's a big selling point to me.
jgaither 4th January 2009, 23:55 Ok, so I'm listening, and I think I figured out how to implement the full odo. So the question remains. How would you set it, initially?
My first choice would be to have it come set to zero and can not be changed. because setting it would be a pain though the limited user interface available.
What do you guys think about it?
Thanks,
Justin

The guy with the 883C 5th January 2009, 04:09 If I were you I'd contact someone at your state Dept. of Motor Vehicles.
They may have the correct legal answer or they might bump you up to federal level (since the product is available in all states).
I know HD won't sell you a speedo unless you buy it in store, so they can set it to match the one you are replacing.
A friend of mine got a new in box HD speedo/tach combo via the internet and NO dealer would install it with zero miles, citing legal requirements.
The guy with the 883C 5th January 2009, 04:10 That said, I'd love one of these.
The guy with the 883C 5th January 2009, 04:15 Another idea - anyone ordering it must send you a photo of their existing speedo showing mileage and you set it to that and then ship it.
MonkeyMouse 5th January 2009, 06:07 Yeah, maybe if we could tell you the millage when ordering and it could be set that way? I'd be completely fine with not having two trip meters and having a dedicated OD. Or im not sure how this plugs into our computer, but if it uses the usb style port on our bikes, maybe you could make it so it can plug into your computer to set it? Not sure, just tossin ideas out. As is that is one bad ass spedo!
doxbike 13th January 2009, 06:48 Justin, I need a micro tach for my new FatBob-any forum discounts?
Also, how do they plug-n-play? I thought you had to splice into 3 wires on the speedo harness?
FWIW, most riders use the odometer to determine when to fuel up.
Thanks,
Bill
Deimus 13th January 2009, 15:39 I use my trip meter for tracking the fuel and I use my odometer for tracking maintenance intervals.
Stingray 13th January 2009, 21:00 I just stumbled across this. I have been looking at other similar items, but they are much more costly! I would consider this too, but for maintenance and resell I too would want a total odometer (set at my current milage), with the resettable trip to.
By the way your bike looks killer! I love the apes!!
Stingray 13th January 2009, 21:10 I guess while we are all asking... Any chance on one unit to do speed/tach/odo/and trip? I'm sure that would require more digits (I'm guessing 6), but would be ideal!
Keep up the great work!
jgaither 14th January 2009, 03:44 Dox,
For the microTach, I don't think I ever used the term plug-n-play and if I did I appologize. If you install the Diag Connecter, then it would become plug-n-play. But you have to install the connector. Instructions are online for using the diag connector. The splice is the easier install, less wires to run and possibly extend.
I would be interested in doing a Group buy if someone wants to organize it. I would give a 20% discount for > 10.
Thanks for your interest

jgaither 14th January 2009, 03:48 So then programming is done. Now I can build em up.
The microSpeed now has a full odometer which you program at first power up. Not changable after that.
There are also 2 resettable trip meters setup specifically for Fuel monitoring and Oil change monitoring.
Thanks for all the feedback and I hope to have a video of it posted by end of the week.

Justin,
Thanks for the reply. I couldn't wait for the group to materialize, so I ordered one of your tachs from Phatperformance parts near here. I just hate not knowing what the motor's doing.

That sounds great! I guess I need to start looking for smooth top clamp now. Be sure to keep us posted with updated photos/videos.

MonkeyMouse 15th January 2009, 07:55 March is tax return time and I know what I want now!
Ahh thats right! mmm I want this! Does the plug in like stock or how does it wire up? How does it attach to where ever you wanna put it?

Top clamp is $15 at any Harley store. The risers are what cost $$
Hookup is 3 wires for 2004 or later. If you are willing to cut the original harness you can just butt connect to where the old speed connected.
Other wise it may be 4 wires to the speed sensor and power.
Justin
MonkeyMouse 16th January 2009, 05:01 So fairly easy to hook up then. Theoriticly I could just go pick up a plug from an auto store and some pins and make it plug into the stock harness it seems.
jgaither 2nd February 2009, 03:54 You can see the videos now on YouTube

Yes, you need the tc88 standard and a tachAdapter.
