View Full Version : Drive Pulley 27 to 30 tooth install advice
Stratwhak 2nd October 2006, 07:13 I just purchased a 30 tooth front drive pulley and I was wondering if anyone had some tips to make the installation go smoothly. A few questions;
1. Is the sprocket nut and main-shaft reverse or normal thread?
2. Assuming there is a butt-load of torque on the sprocket nut what is the safest way to break it loose without damaging the transmission gears?
3. Do I need a gear puller if so what type would be best (and cheapest)?
4. Do I need to apply lock-tight, antisieze or nothing to the spline before installation of the new pulley?
5. Is the stock 883 belt large enough for the 30 tooth pulley?
6. If you've done this to your bike, what did you think of the change?
Thanks for looking

Mattbastard 2nd October 2006, 14:26 As per my 96 sporty going to a 29T:
Reverse thread
Put it in 5th and reef on the rear brake while you use an extension on a breaker bar. Or what I did was clamp on a C-clamp around the master cylinder and compress the caliper that way. Just dont reef on it too much, just enough so that the tire dont spin.
No gear puller
Blue locktite
Not sure about the belt, but with my 29T I've still got a little play for the axle to move up
I love it. According to my friends Honda Hawk, I'm at 68 where I used to be at 60. Even for an 883, I didn't miss any torque in the lower gears, and it can still pull a bit in 5th. You've got the ideal extended interstate setup there. I like where it put the rpm's for the local highways (65ish), but if I head out west I'd like to be able to hold 75 at no more than 3 grand.
Hanoverfiste 2nd October 2006, 14:34 its a 1 - 7/8 socket for the pulley... I have heard of guys going up by one tooth in the front.. but not 3...... 1 added tooth on the front pulley moves the rear tire about 3/16 of an inch forward...
Question for anyone reading this..? is the 1200 belt and the 883 belt the same length?... if so. you shouldnt have anything to worry about..
Stratwhak 6th October 2006, 09:10 Thanks for the info and tips, This bike has the 1200 kit in it so I think it should be ok on power.
4banger 6th October 2006, 15:34 I have the 30t and just put a thunderheader on that moved my power up in rpms and was thinking about going back to a 29t. But after a couple of high speed runs I'm sticking with my 30t. I guess harmonics plays a role in my outlook. At 80mph, which is were the big rigs run, she is very smooth and when I go WFO she leaps to the ton, so for me the 30t is great. I just down shift to 4th if I need to pass when I'm going less than 70 in 5th gear. It is like having one more gear compared to a 28t.
chipdog4 9th October 2006, 01:28 30 tooth is great on the highway. I have a stock 02 883 and it hasn't any take off.
It does take a little more patience getting the belt bakc over the rear pulley because the axle will be very far forward now.
If all you do is stop light driving, don't change it. I'm thinking about stepping down to a 29 or 28.
Mattbastard 9th October 2006, 02:23 So, you've got an 02' 883 and you installed a 30T countershaft pulley?
If you have the info, what's the part number of that 30T? I take it the larger pulley fit with the stock belt? Also, wanna trade your 30T for my stock 27T? I installed a 29T on my 96 883 and would like a little more top end smoothness.
chipdog4 10th October 2006, 16:28 BDL's part number is TPS-30
Custom Chrome 42742
Drag Specialties DS360048

I still have my stock 27 tooth pulley, but thanks. Yes the belt fit, but the axle adjusters are way far forward.
prowler 10th October 2006, 16:45 Mt first post...... I put the 29 tooth on the front and a 55 tooth instead of the 61 tooth on the back. Had to go to a shorter belt (125t instead of 128t), but the reduction in RPMs is great on the freeway, I just have to remember that my speedometer is 20 percent off...... i.e. 60mph indicated is more like 72mph actual
GOTWA 10th October 2006, 17:24 Anyone have a source for a 28T or 29T pulley for '04+ models? I kind find them up to '03 but not for my bike. I know they're out there. Or is there no difference?
Thanks.
Mattbastard 10th October 2006, 18:27 Thanks for the reply. You've got the aluminum one I assume. Is there a steel counterpart that I could get from HD? I've heard ppl on here complain about the aluminum ones and quality issues they've had with them wearing too quickly and whatnot.
chipdog4 13th October 2006, 21:09 I remember someone a while back getting a steel 29 tooth from harley for around $60? That wouldn't be bad at all.

Stratwhak 14th October 2006, 08:43 I got the 30t on Wednesday, piece of cake. The belt was plenty long enough, I slipped the pulley on with the rear wheel still on the bike. The rpms dropped about 500 at 70mph and taking off in first was still smooth and quick. Thank you all for your helpful responses.

Glad everything worked out good for you. I really like having a 30t when I'm flying on the interstate.:clap
Ericxb9r 20th October 2007, 03:55 I have a 2005 Firebolt 900. I want to make an acceleration improvment.I'm thinking quite a few teeth less. My question is are there sprockets available and how many teeth should I subtract.
