Those will be posted within this thread once they are figured out. But, for reference, I'll post a link (http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/showthread.php?t=112943) to last year's Lake Run. We usually have it in May, probably Memorial Weekend...

Well... since someone asked!!! Just to give y'all an idea of the previous plans. We also concluded that Memorial Day weekend was ideal and hoped to continue. This year that would be the 22nd (Fri) through the 25th (Mon).

THIS IS THE REVISED ITINERARY FROM 2008 BASED ON ACTUAL TIMES
================================================== ====
FRIDAY May 23rd ITINERARY

These are given so that other OHIO riders will know where we'll be and approximately when to expect us. PM me and let me know if and when you'd like to join the group, and we'll stage the ride accordingly to pick you up...

DUNDEE, MICHIGAN TO GENEVA, OHIO (Shark Doctor to lead)

1030 - Meet and greet at Cabela's in Dundee; fuel.

1045 - Depart en route Toledo via 223, I-475W, to I-75N (both real short) to US 20 at I-75N Exit 193. Meet in K-Mart parking lot, 1/2mi to east off exit ramp on south side of road. Total distance 58 miles.

1200 - Depart heading east on US20 toward Clyde, then Bellevue, then Norwalk (US20 By-Pass). Then Wakeman where we pick up route 303. Total distance to Wakeman 85 miles.

1430 - Route 303 east to Lagrange, then Brunswick. Fuel and lunch in Brunswick BEFORE intersection of 303 and I-71. Total distance 14 miles. Lunch and fuel in Brunswick BEFORE 303 crosses under I-71 (major construction).

1530 - Depart en route Richfield, then on to Peninsula, probably between 1545 and 1600, then route 534 north. Total distance 59 miles.

1715 - Head north on route 534 into Geneva. Total distance 39 miles.

1830 - Arrive Geneva.

LODGE at Geneva (440-466-7100)

1900 - Dinner. TBA.

SATURDAY May 24th ITINERARY

(Chuck/Cantolina through OH; Jason's Sporty to guide through Erie, PA; Cantolina to NY and lunch destination); Shark Doctor to Canada; Iron Mick from Ft. Erie to Delhi).

This is Cantolina's post from 2005 that proved pretty accurate and we'll follow it again this year to Canada.

"On the way from Geneva to Niagara Falls, the assumption is that we're gonna "hug" the lake....

0900 exit from Geneva, we should run thru Conneaut about 10:00. We will be trying to stay along Rt 5 as much as possible....trying to stay along the lake itself...

1030 (per JASON'S SPORTY) Through Erie on Alt. Route 5(8th Street) to the Bayfront Parkway across the city to East Lake Road headed toward Harborcreek and points east. This is a nice scenic route and takes us right along the lake for 5 miles! Map of Erie The route I am talking about is the northernmost road on the map. Just find west 8th street and the bayfront will be next road north of it.

1300 Refueling at the reservation in Silver Creek, NY (perhaps as late as noon)

There is a Y where the Cattaraugus Creek is crossed....one way goes Rt.5, the other goes Rt 20.....we will refuel at the very first (Seneca Hawk?) station....its actually ON the Y...from there, we will proceed down Rt. 5 and cut down to Old Lake Shore Rd. ASAP....

1345 It will be a late lunch day. We will be stopping before Buffalo at Tony's Drive-In....in front of the Bayview Hotel in Hamburg, NY..... Lunch there for 1 1/2 hrs....(I like to be conservative), then on to the Peace Bridge....

1445 Should reach the Peace Bridge in about 45 minutes or less from there....

1530 or earlier, crossing and to Tim Hortons' in Ft. Erie

Then, we hand off to our gracious Canadian hosts... IronMick, et al.

1530-1630 depart for Delhi; ~100 miles

1900 Arrive Tilsonburg. Lodging at several motels inmcluding COMFORT INN. Dinner at COURTLAND ROAD HOUSE

SUNDAY May 25th ITINERARY

0800 Breakfast at COURTLAND ROAD HOUSE.

0900 Depart heading to Port Bruce and Beldheim.

Make it up as we go. Some will travel for awhile and depart as necessary. Some will stay in Windsor Sunday night. Some will return to Ohio, Michigan, etc.

----------------------------------------------------

FINAL ARRANGEMENTS

On Thursday night, May 21, we will meet in the "chat room" where I'll have a room for the "Lake Ride" and we can discuss details and get psyched even more. We found that to be very helpful every year of the previous runs! Probably around 8-9 EDT. Will advise. (NOTE: Try out the chat sometime before then if you haven't already so you can work out the kinks...)

Hei that weekend is good for me also. The only thing is that Thursday again too many people off that week. I need that Thursday to get down there to meet up with you all in Michigan. I work till 4:00 so after work I can head out or Friday morning depends on the Lake Express out of Milwaukee. With the short time I have I think I will ride to Tillsonburg for Friday and Saturday night [that's if were still staying Saturday night there].Saturday morning I will head out for a ride up too the Falls [if I have time] then meet everyone in Fort Erie that is if everything stays the same. Staying in Tillsonburg Friday night is nice also because I can unload bike for the ride on Saturday. On the way back this year I am looking on riding back going the southern route around the Lake. See Ya

For those of you new to the Forum or this ride, the best way to keep up is to subscribe to this thread. That way you are notified of all new posts for this topic.

As you are reading posts, look toward the top menu bar and you will see THREAD TOOLS. A drop-down box lets you "SUBSCRIBE TO THIS THREAD." That is the ONLY way to really keep up with the discussion. Our past experience suggests that nearly 100 different folks will express an interest in the ride, but only 25-30 actually show up. The mail system at the XL Forum doesn't allow us to easily contact 100 folks, so keeping up with the thread by subscribing means you won't miss any of the discussion of ride arrangements. And it sure beats going back through the nearly 1,000 posts that will occur before the ride in late May!!!

We have had some terrific rides and met some great people, so, by all means, plan to join us for the 5th Annual!

Hey Skien, route 30 is not a very nice road neighborhood or traffic wise. We will probably have to go a little farther south. We can talk about that on our way around Erie. We stayed just outside of Albion on Sunday and hit IL on Monday. With all that riding in Canada and then 1/2 way across MI on Sunday (chasing Shark around the interchanges) my ass was done for the day. I plan on doing the same this year, I prefer a more leisurely adventure.

Nobody's really argued against those dates, but it is still pretty early and not many have really participated in the discussion yet. As you remember from last year, we all agreed that Mem Day weekend was a great choice, so I'm guessing there will be a lot of support for those dates. But I'd hate to have you schedule that time off and then have the dates changed!

Maybe if someone has a really compelling reason to change the dates, they will speak up now?

Yeah. I'm pretty sure today is Mac's 65th birthday, so the walker is logical. His new trailer actually bolts on to the Ultra with a rigid connect just exactly like a trike would so it holds the bike upright 'cause he's getting so old he can't keep the bike upright when he stops. It's kinda hard to watch, seeing him use the walker. The tats are being to droop a little more, his hair is beginning to fall out a bit, and, well you know... it's just not a pretty sight...

If you are not using a passport or the new card your birth certificate MUST be original with the embossed (raised) seal.

I just applied for my card today, they say the lead time is only 3 weeks, we'll see.

Yea, I know its early but I think I'm gonna put in for the time now. Its easier to not use time over a holiday than it is to ask for it late.

I'm soooo tempted - its 56 degrees here right now - I wanna ride so bad but there is so much runoff and still a lot of salt on the streets I think I may wait.... decisions decisions....

Personally I wouldn't mind using the original weekend (the weekend before Memorial Weekend) for two reasons:

1) There's a club ride Memorial Weekend that I haven't attended in a few years
2) It 'll be like the first time we all rode together.

Having said that, I will obviously go when everybody else wants to go. Perhaps a poll is in order?

I was able to get a some rooms for a special price at Geneva Lodge and conference center for Friday May 23rd The original cost was $159 and the rooms now will only will be $99 for the nite. They have a
fantastic restaurant and an adequate bar along with
pool spa etc. Call the front desk and make your reservation ASAP
440-466-7100 and tell them you want one of the rooms. PM me and I'll give you the name there reserved under It's a few dollars more per nite but well worth it and it's just a few more miles farther north than the Hojo's...

Hope this helps. I don't think plans have progressed as far as deciding where we are staying yet. I would give it a couple more weeks to see if anything is going to change.

The plan hasn't changed (yet)... The Canadians will line up the stay for Sat, probably at the same place(s) where we stayed last year. You remember that we actually cross into Fort Erie between 3 and 4 and then ride to ??? for lodging and dinner... right? That's a several hour run if you're planning to ride to Ft. Erie, meet us, and then ride back.

Maybe the thing to do (if that's your plan) is to consider riding into London for Friday night, meet up with the Canadians there, and ride with them Sat to Fort Erie? That wouldn't be much out of your way at all and would make Sat more enjoyable for you. IronMick (Mike) or Force50 (Steve) can help you with arrangements when they start answering up... (This is what I would do... and London is a neat town.)

I made a mistake, I started at Ludington took all freeeways home. I live about 45 minutes southwest of Cleveland and the Ohio pike and I was home in 6 hours.

If I had staed on the pike I would have made cleveland in that 45 minutes and Clevelands an hour from Geneva. I think you can make the trip easily in 8 hours and that won't be pushing it. Take 96 to 23 to 80/90 across to Geneva
You will be waiting on everyone else to arrive.

No worries mate, I would take the Fat Boy too (if I had one) for all the interstate riding. Take the price break on the ferry, it will make for an easier ride home therefor a more enjoyable ride too. This is supposed to be a fun time - no pressure. I have extra days off on both sides of this trip so I am in no hurry either way, I'll probably take the long way round coming and going just to stay off the interstates and see some sites along the way.

this sucks, if moe hasnt filled anyone in, i wont be attending this year.

Im using all my military leave up this month, i go on leave for 30 days starting the 20th of this month, to attend a CDL class to get my license, prior to me departure of the Army. My seperation of the Army is July 29th, and im planning on drving a truck for a living til my wife graduates here in 2 years. Not a glamourous job, but its gonna pay the bills. Id wait to tak the class, but with todays economy I have to hit the job market ASAP, ive already applied to a few local postal carrier jobs and UPS jobs. right now were jsut trying to get our future set. The decision was hard but, i just cant carr the military torch anymore, 6 yrs now over 3 yrs deployed. Its time to start a real life and a family sooner or later.

Although i will have Fri-Mon off for memorial day, theres just no possible way for me to make it home. I havent brought it up to the wife yet about, going to geneva and then turning around. But im pretty sure its a 98% no.

If you are not using a passport or the new card your birth certificate MUST be original with the embossed (raised) seal.

I just applied for my card today, they say the lead time is only 3 weeks, we'll see.

:tour

I applied for my card February 27th and it just came in the mail today. :clap So, 5 weeks - the tracking on the passport site never worked. If you need to apply I say do it quick. Also, last year it took 3 weeks to get an embossed copy of my birth certificate from the great state of Kentucky.

Don't want anyone to miss the ride or not be able to get back into the U.S. so...

sorry to just chime in but I thought you may have some interest in this. There is a newly constructed covered bridge that your group will be practically riding beside and if you don't know its there you will never see it. I've been taking rides to it last summer during the construction. Its now the 4th largest covered bridge in the country. pretty cool to drive thru and would be even better with a group. Enjoy your ride guys (and girls). here is the link.....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_Ashtabula_County_Covered_Bridge

DEFINITELY!!! I betcha Chuck will guide us there; he is a real bridge guru and actually gave us a terrific pin the year of the first ride. That area comes on sat after we leave Geneva... And you know I just live to cross every new bridge I come to!!!

I haven't finished that leg (don't go into Canada), but if remember right, we've always been ahead of schedule on that leg, haven't we?

Sounds like a real nice detour....

Chuck should let us know how far out of the way it will take us, as I considered my OWN detour this year, for just this reason.....but this trumps any ideas I had...Mine was a "different place for lunch" detour...:laugh:laugh

Not that I don't love Tony's, but for us regulars, there's more to Western New York than Tony's Drive-In steak tacos...:shhhh

You know how this works: the list is assembled when we meet at Fort Erie's Tim Hortons!!! Whoever shows up is "on the list!" LOL

We'd be glad to have you along. We'll start refining the plans in about three weeks or so... I assume Steve and Mick will scope out hotels, etc., and we'll make it up from there.

Well...
Toward the end of last season, I noticed a slight rattling that sounded like it was coming from the front cylinder. My plan was to pull the top end apart over the winter and check into it. Unfortunately, I had a busy winter and didn't get around to it.

I fired it up a couple weeks ago and have done some riding. Again, I'm hearing a slight rattling and it's driving me nuts. So, today, I decided to pull the front cylinder and have a look around. Everything looked nice. However, it seems I have a very slight "looseness" to the front connecting rod. Side to side seems ok but there is an almost imperceptible up/down. (probably just enough to make the noise) I'm not ready to pull the whole thing down and split the case just yet so I'm gonna put it all back together tomorrow and ride it. With any luck, I won't be walking home from Buffalo. ;)

On a side note...
I've done plenty of wrenching on Sportys over the years and for some reason, my brain just left me this afternoon. While reinstalling the pin and clip, I forgot to stuff a rag into the hole and wouldn't you know it...that little prick went boing and flew straight into the hole. Fortunately, I was able to fish it out with a magnet. I'll finish it up tomorrow if my head feels right.

Should be there ~1015 - 1045 (if we follow the customary plan).

THIS IS THE REVISED -- TENTATIVE -- ITINERARY, MODIFIED FROM 2008 BASED ON ACTUAL TIMES
================================================== ====
FRIDAY May 22nd ITINERARY

01Sporty says new lunch spot this year.

TBA.

SATURDAY May 23rd ITINERARY

(Chuck/Cantolina through OH; Jason's Sporty to guide through Erie, PA; Cantolina to NY and lunch destination); Shark Doctor to Canada; Iron Mick from Ft. Erie to Delhi or Tilsonburg).

Maybe a covered bridge ride en route this year?

1030 (per JASON'S SPORTY) Through Erie on Alt. Route 5(8th Street) to the Bayfront Parkway across the city to East Lake Road headed toward Harborcreek and points east. This is a nice scenic route and takes us right along the lake for 5 miles! Map of Erie The route I am talking about is the northernmost road on the map. Just find west 8th street and the bayfront will be next road north of it. Jason says maybe a new route this year...

Cantolina says new lunch spot this year.

1445 Should reach the Peace Bridge in about 45 minutes or less from there....

1530 or earlier, crossing and to Tim Hortons' in Ft. Erie

Then, we hand off to our gracious Canadian hosts... IronMick, et al.

1530-1630 depart for Delhi or Tilsonburg; ~100 miles

1900 Arrive Tilsonburg. Lodging at several motels including COMFORT INN. Dinner at COURTLAND ROAD HOUSE. Lodging unknown... Canadiens haven't joined conversation yet.

SUNDAY May 24th ITINERARY

I only know one regular poster here, and have never attended this "run". I'm thinking of going this year, but have a few questions.

First, I won't know till the last minute if I'm able to go; is that a problem? (I certainly understand if it is)

Second, even if I don't do the entire trip, I'm thinking of attending the dinner at Chops grill in Geneva on Friday evening. Is this still on the schedule?

And, finally, I'm not a U.S. citizen, but a resident alien. Does anyone know if, under the new rules, my "green card" is acceptable identification for returning to the U.S.?

One more thing......I love visiting Canada and have been numerous times. I've never had a bad visit and even received a compliment on my mauvais français once, when visiting Quebec City. :laugh

Your Green Card is fine to return to the U.S. for this trip. That is what I use. Starting on June 1st however you'll need a passport as well (assuming from your handle that would be a British passport).

A couple notes here...
The lodge in GOL is real nice. Great rooms, great breakfast, and so on. However, the dinner left a lot to be desired; Just not my cup o' tea. I've already reserved my room for this year but I will be eating dinner elsewhere.

Secondly, the crappy motel we stayed at last year in Tillsonburg (The Hilltop Motel) will not get my business again. It was dirty, no heat, no towels, very little hot water, non-working television and owners that wanna argue when you complain about any of it. Avoid it like the swine flu.

Because of my work situation, I'm still very up-in-the-air about making it this year...

It looks ok TODAY, but things could change...

Being in management has its good points, but sometimes, it sucks!

As such, I have not made a reservation in Geneva, so I'm hoping I can either still get a room that day, or bunk up with someone...

I'll know more as the week progresses, but it looks better than even so far ;)

BTW....no new lunch location...It will be the same...Tony's Drive-In, Blasdell, NY

I'd LOVE to hit the Varysburg Hotel (Varysburg, NY) instead this year....GREAT food, and owned by a good friend of mine....its a "biker destination" around here.... but its too far out of the way for us to be able to stay on time, I think...

Certainly it would pull us off the lake route (not necessarily a bad thing) at the fuel stop in Silver Creek.

My route from Toledo to Cleveland I am looken to take the TPK. I think I will arrive Cleveland area around four pm. Should I take 480 over to 271 or take 90 though Cleveland. Just don't know how the traffic is in the big city.

480 is just as crazy as 90 through Cleveland. If those were my only choices, I would take 90. Any time but rush hour is not bad either way. If you take 271, be aware the local lanes northbound are all chewed up in preparation for a new surface. Express lanes were pretty good this week, subject to change, of course. What time are you planning on passing Cleveland? Oh, I gotta add, I like Rt 2 from Toledo to Cleveland.
I was on Rt 303 from Oberlin to I-71 Friday. 303 is smooth as a baby's behind on that stretch. Also 303 is good from Hinkley past Rt 44. 534 should be good too. That got a new surface within the last couple years.
See you all Friday, weather and work permitting.

Cantolina, there is still the Ho Jo's at Rt. 534 and Rt. 90 where you guys stayed before also there is a motel or two on the strip (Geneva On The Lake) they should be less. They are what I call biker motels. Lodge is nicer of course but............
Also since you guys are running during Memorial Day weekend, the strip (Geneva On The Lake) should be in full force there are a couple good hamburger joints, Sportsters Bar and Grill and the Bermuda Triangle Bar and Grill have good food. GOTL is all about bikes. For those who never been to the strip, you should spend Fri. hanging out there. Bikes, beverages, food and less than a mile away for those staying at Lodge! Just saying is all.
Let me know if ya need any info.. Kell and I will ride part way Sat. and may join up on Fri. wherever you guys land.

Keep in mind that, regardless of the weather reports, we will be riding close to the lake all the time. The temperature will be colder and the air more damp than inland, and it will be colder in the morning and late afternoon that the expected high for the day. And we will have a constant in-your-face wind of about 60 MPH while riding. So dress appropriately.

I will be wearing thermal underwear top and bottom; jeans & sweatshirt; and leathers. I prefer leather mitts to gloves for cold weather riding; some have a concern about lever control with mitts but in my experience this is not a valid concern - mitts are definitely better than gloves.

I will have rain gear in the saddlebags - not so much for rain, but to wear in the early AM or late PM if i need to keep out the dampness.

This is Canada. We have 4 seasons here: Cold, Wet, Windy; and sometimes Summer. I am old enough to actually remember that time we had Summer; i think. Or maybe that was a dream.

Whatever, you want to be comfortable regardless of the weather.

For now, for those who will meet in Brunswick (SteveK, Glazgowboy, and any others), let's meet at the STEAK 'N SHAKE on Route 303 just west of I-71 on the south side of the highway. If the restaurant doesn't suit all tastes, we can move. But let's set that as our meet-up place so we don't have to rely on cell phones. Should be close to 1430 when we finally arrive.

Tony Roma's closed unexpectedly last fall.

Route 303's surface has been greatly improved. The downside is it is getting more and more crowded and harder to get a large group out on*.

I looked for better-sized sit downs on the south side of 303* and didn't do too well. I did find one place 20-30 mins. west of Brunswick a mile North of 303. Shark Doctor has the details.

I doubt I'll be making lunch this year, not enough time these days.

Steak and Shake is on the South side of 303 (Center Rd). Assuming the folks meeting-up there are coming from the east (303, I71 etc). I would suggest actually passing it and turning left at the next light ahead and back-tracking. It's in front of a Home Depot store, but you only see the side of the Dumpo from 303.
If you're coming from the west, you'll pass a Giant Eagle & Get-Go station, make a right at the next light, just past Giant Eagle.

Okeydokey, here are the first ride pics from Peninsula, Ohio. I was going to hook up there where they have always stopped in years past. Parked my bike and waited with my camera. Couple of them smiled and waved at me as they drove by. I realized they were not stopping though. Boogied over to my bike and proceeded to chase them down. Damn was there a lot of traffic. Finally caught up in Streetsboro before the gas stop.

The group leaves Geneva at 8:30, check the posted intinerary. My wife and I will jump in with them in Conneaut as they pass by. We should be taking Rt. 5 all the way to Buffalo. My wife and I will turn back in either Dunkirk or Buffalo.
We'll try and look for ya, what's your ride?
