Yep I'm the proud new payment maker on 2007 1200R. Traded in the '05 883.
No pics yet, pick it up tomorrow. They are swapping a bunch of my parts over from the old bike to the new one and it was getting late so I told 'em I'd come get tomorrow.
But, this is the one. Fire Red Pearl. Sorry folks, I love my black but that red is sure nice. Rob (RedRider) should like this. :D

She's got a black engine. :D
Made a fair deal. Not great but I never expect that anyway. But I'm keeping my Progressives, SEII's, seat, sissy bar, etc. THen I'm going to get another Hurricane Flow from NRHS.
I just couldn't keep dealing with the problems on the '05. Especially when on this last go-round the MoCo themselves told me they wouldn't authorize any more work until I had a total failure. And I wouldn't have been able to do the conversion if I wanted to keep the protection for the problem. They would cover any related issues for the life of the bike, but not if I did the conversion. That was the last straw.
I got a whole lot more bike for not a lot more money. Yes, I lost on the '05 but I still did alright. And I get the blacked out engine I love, dual fronts, 1200cc's with XB heads, EFI, tach, new-design tranny, etc. Would have taken a lot of cash and time to get the '05 where I wanted her and it still wouldn't be all the bike this one is.
It wasn't an easy decision but it is one I think is the best for me. :)

This ain't going to come out right, and please don't take it the wrong way. The MoCo told you they couldn't fix your bike until it totally failed? So, you trade yours in on another one? I don't quite understand why you'd buy another Sporty if you weren't happy with the first one. I don't think I'd give Harley any more of my money until they made it right.

No it came out right and I don't take it the wrong way. In fact, that's almost exactly what my old biker brother in law said. :D
The most recent trouble with the '05 was just the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. The '05 took me a lot of places and made some great memories for me and got my "street legs" after years of off road. But the truth is, had I known then, what I know now, I would have bought a 1200R. It just suits my riding style much better. I was committed to the '05 and working toward making it what I needed and wanted until this last bout. I swear the parts on that bike were made and assemebled on Mondays and Fridays! :D
As for not giving HD any more money, man that was a huge consideration for me. It really was. HD is my brand and I won't change that for all the reasons it is my brand. It's strange, a love/hate kind of thing. I could have gone ahead with my conversion and said screw the MoCo and, like a very trusted friend and knowledgable man suggested, not worried about the starting issues. But always in the back of my mind it would have been there. I didn't like that. If there were an answer for it, a reason, that I could take, but the whole mystery of it would have bugged me. And I'd still never make into the bike that this one is.
So there was more than just the mechanical issues with the '05. It was about finding the bike that suits my style and desires.
In the end I just felt this was right for me. Hopefully, this bike won't give me near as many occassions to talk with the service department. ;)

Actually I'm not sure the seat and/or sissy bar will fit yet. Just know that I am keeping them. Most likely they would've pulled the sissy bar off anyway. Remember I made it and painted it red and that doesn't exactly appeal to the masses. ;) So I'm taking it. Will be making a new one And if nothing else this one will be good for referencing. Then I'll see if my buddy Scotty wants it so he can chrome it and put it on his '06XLC.
The seat, even if it doesn't fit, I wanted back. I was going to lose on the '05 I just wanted to minimize as much of that loss as possible. So if the seat doesn't fit I can sell it to help fund a new one.
I know I have seen blips about slight redesign of the frame and fender for the '07's but I don't know any more than that(?).
And as you'll recall my highway bar is homemade and red as well so I'm getting that back too. :D

Gotwa, perhaps this is how HD planned on resolving the starter issues in the first place, fool around until you finally trade it and the problems off and they can go back to marketing beef jerky... :p
I guess you and I had the same attitude about our late Friday afternoon assembled bikes and the mechanical issues they suffered and we traded our problem children away, but you're a bit more forgiving toward the MoCo than I, I traded for a Yamaha... :D

Yeah, I stuck with HD and the Sportster. It's what I love. Sort of like women, they always give you some grief but that doesn't mean you switch teams.:D:D:D Just funnin' ya Darkstar. I'm one of them ride what makes ya happy guys and I think your VMax is a cool looking bike.
As for the EFI, I'm hopeful. I don't pretend to know all the technical stuff but I can say this, the service manager at my dealer doesn't even own an HD. He's a motorcyclist first and his prefered style is dual sport. He's an old MX racer I believe. So his primary ride is a DR. He wants a Uly bad but at around 5'7" that ain't happening. But he and I were talking about the EFI, long before he knew I was interested in a new bike and he said HD's closed loop system is hands down the best out there. Take it FWIW. :)

I'm under the impression that some stuff changed toward the rear, underseat and fender strut areas, in order to accomodate the ECU and some other electronics.
The parts catalog suggests that things like the luggage racks, sideplates, sissybars and seats will all be unique to the 07+ models.
Don't know about front down-tubes, like say if crash bars or forwards would be the same.
Honestly, IF it wasn't for all those differences, Jenn and I would probably have considered upgrading from the 883L to a 1200R or 1200L, but it wouldn't be worth ditching all the stuff we currently have. And we don't NEED the power of the 1200.

Nice bike! I have to wait until January... sigh.
I truly hope the sideplates/rack/sissy bar will fit on the 07, since I kept mine from the 04. The dealer *said* they'd fit, definitely, and it sure looks like they'll fit. Obviously I'll have to buy the little posts for the new bike, but that should be it. If it *doesn't* fit, I'll have a nice setup for sale for somebody with an 04-06.
Hey, I'm in WA, too... if you want to ride up I-5 we could see if the 04-06 stuff would fit. And I could sit on your bike to make sure it's not too tall for me. :D I ordered this thing without sitting on one with a stock seat, so who knows?

A quick-check of the HD site was encouraging. Yes the detachable solo luggage rack is still labelled as 04+ which would mean the fender and fender struts would have to be basically the same (and that would mean sideplates and sissybars would fit).
Hey ERIC, that means your custom sissybar would probably still fit!!!!
Same seems to be true for Crash Bars.
Heck, I wonder if everything we have but the seats would fit on an 07???
(edit - I just checked and the tach wouldn't, but that's not a big deal)
(I'd better not wonder that out-loud too much, cause I want an XR if/when it comes and if we upgraded Jenn's Sporty that would be one more step further away from an XR :shhhh ).
Thanks for pointing that out BT :clap , I THINK :doh

Good chioce in colors there Erik.
I have a good friend here that has the 1200R 2007, he says that the FI has made the Sportster the perfect bike, no carb farts, and it runs great cold or hot.
He owns like a dozen bikes, some Harleys, others of varring brands, i do trust his opinoin.

Holy Shyt! Congratulations! I'm so jealous! I want a new 1200 Custom or Low so much, but not in the cards right now money wise due to the new baby.... *sigh* This little bub is definitely going to cramp my style for awhile ;) lol

Nice Bike, GOTWA. We'll be watching for the upcoming (frigid) ride reports. Still in the 50s and 60s down here in the Sunny South.
Now if my (Vivid Black) '07 1200R would get here, I would be a happy camper! It is due later this month, but I'm having a hard time waiting.....
Have fun with the new bike!

P.S. Red is a GREAT color too!!
