View Full Version : How hot does your right thigh get when riding?
bmcdonau 10th November 2006, 17:05 When I'm riding around town, the lower part of my right thigh gets noticeably warm either from the head or the exhaust pipe. Its worse when I stop at a light. Its not real warm here now, only in the mid 80s, but I can see this being a problem this summer when its 100 degrees. Does anyone else notice this happening?

gymrat523 10th November 2006, 17:20 no never noticed, should not be an issue.
Casper 10th November 2006, 17:23 Never had a problem with it. Then again, I'm guessing it gets a mite hotter during summertime down there in Texas than it does up here.

Since your bike is a 2007, being new it might run a little hotter until it gets broken in. Plus the exhaust and hot oil tank are both on the right side. You've got to remember you're sitting over an engine that's producing alot of heat too. Once you're moving the breeze should blow all that heat behind you. It really shouldn't take much speed to leave the heat behind, except for summer but that's not coming from the bike. If you're feeling to much heat while riding then ride faster.:D
hogpreacher 10th November 2006, 18:02 I notice the heat only when stopped for long lights or traffic. I have forward controls so heat does not affect leg when riding. Also, I suspect it is more noticable if you have shorter legs and thus are closer to engine.
debster 10th November 2006, 18:06 I only notice that when sitting in traffic or waiting for long lights, and then only in summer. For me, the heat is coming from my oil tank. Soon as I get going again, it's fine.
JohnT 10th November 2006, 18:35 Normal. You're sitting on several pretty significant heat sources. Actually, all open engine air-cooled twins do a pretty good job of dissipating heat. Try a bike with a full fairing (like a Yamaha FJR) in the same conditions. Now, they get hot. And even when you're moving, the ealier ones vented all the heat right onto you. Bottom line: H-D does a pretty good job at this, but when it's hot, it's hot.
bmcdonau 10th November 2006, 18:39 Thanks for the replies. It only happens when stopped at lights so I guess that's normal. I'
dombell 10th November 2006, 18:45 Hot thighs bad?
Screw Loose Dan 11th November 2006, 00:29 Back when we had 80-90 degree days...I don't remember the heat being disconcerting on my 07 883. It did get a little warmer on the right side, but I'm pretty sure that is the exhaust.
Now I'm just hoping that I can feel a little heat from the engine...
rcliffor 11th November 2006, 00:31 No problem with my thigh, just overhaul heat on 95 deg. days when stopped for a while.

dirtcrab 12th November 2006, 03:10 What the heck happend to your pant leg?
Spontaneous combustion caused by contact with the exhaust on my '07 1200! This just happened 30 minutes ago on the ride home from a hair appointment. I can see a black smudge on the heat shield of the upper exhaust where it must have ignited (see attached picture). Bad pants to ride in I suppose. Too flappy in the wind at highway speeds. I wonder if they will take them back... "umm.. excuse me Ms. sales person... I didn't notice this when I bought these" :wonderlan
I pulled into the garage and I inquired... "do you smell something burning?" "HOLY $H!T!"
sportyblue 12th November 2006, 03:54 Melted my chaps......inner thigh.......something was hot.....oil tank I suppose....to high for exhaust......noticeably hotter when stopped.....always tried to keep my right leg way out away from heat source when stopped. I believe that happened when I was summer riding in Georgia. Bike never gets that hot in the state of Washington.

Melted your chaps! Holy crap! I was thinking I needed to start wearing some because of the heat... so hot I feel like jumping off the bike at times... and I try to hang my whole leg out into the air to cool off... but even that doesn't work around here for nine months out of twelve!
dang... melted chaps... going to have to rig up some sort of barrier maybe...
