Hi to you all,
My name is Nick and I come from Rochester in England. I own a 1989 883 Hugger which has a 4 speed gearbox and I am thinking of converting from a chain drive to belt drive I would value anybodys experience / advice in this matter. My current chain and sprockets are rapidly coming to the end of their life so I need to decide which way to go. Thanks.

You should do it. I converted my bike in 1989. It's easy and I consider it the single best modification I ever did to my bike.

I had the Harley belt drive conversion installed on my '88 1200 many years ago. The transmission sprocket worked it's way loose in no time, and damaged the splines on the sprocket and shaft. In addition, the belt drive ratio was too low for the bike. I went back to the chain drive set-up, and I had to use a green Loctite product to try and take up the slack between the damaged shaft spline and the new chain sprocket. I remember the belt also ran very close to the tire, which I also didn't care for. If it were me I would leave well enough alone and keep using the chain drive set-up. I believe the factory transmission shaft spline is much larger for the belt drives than the splines used on the chain drives, which might be the reason the conversion kit belt sprocket worked it's way loose. Good luck.

Are there any other opinions on changing from chain drive to belt drive? I see 2 for it and 2 against it. I would really like to hear more sucess or horror stories as I am considering making the switch from chain to belt on my 1990 4 speed sporty.

To all Just signed on to this forum. Like DougT my 1990 sporty had a belt kit installed. My gear striped out 7 years ago while on a road trip. Luck would have it a harley dealer was open and had the part I needed. The same thing just happened again . I was wondering if I needed to replace the splin or is there an easier way to stop this from happening. Did the green loctite work for you. I'm beginning to think this is a world wide problem.
Thanks for awaited input.
