View Full Version : Advance Order Opportunity On Xl Series Iii Saddlebags

Hi Guys & Gals,

My latest shipment of XL Series saddlebags is in customs down in Texas and will be arriving soon. These are called Series III for a reason. This is the third iteration of the design and we have made multiple major and minor improvements in the design and materials using everything I have learned about throw-over saddlebags and feed back from you the end user.

For those of you that are not familiar with the XL Saddlebags they are leather throw-over saddlebags designed specifically for Harley Davidson Sportsters for DONSCYCLEWARE.COM .

Some features are:

Easy off design allows you to remove the saddlebags while leaving the yoke in place

Quick release straps so you can get to your gear while wearing gloves.

Extra long adjustable straps so you can attach gear to the outside of the saddlebags.

Full length rain flap to help keep your gear dry.

Water resistant interior pocket for small gear.

The latest version also has over 50% more interior volume than earlier models. We have made over a dozen minor changes in materials and design that are hard to see that I believe make these some of the best throw-overs you can buy for your Sportster.

ABOUT THE GROUP BUY

I typically let XL Members buy in before I receive an order. In this case since it is the first shipment of a new design we inspect the saddlebags prior to sale. I anticipate receiving the saddlebags in about a week. Inspection will take about two days. After they pass inspection I will list the in the XL Forum Group Buy section of our Yahoo store : http://yhst-56782386502321.stores.yahoo.net/xlfogrbu.html

Forum members will be able to purchase the XL Series saddlebags at the wholesale price of $89.00 after your 15% discount is deducted for a limited time.

Here's a link to the section: http://yhst-56782386502321.stores.yahoo.net/xlfogrbu.html

While your at it I'm still taking orders for the skid lids!

Here's a photo of my prototype. They will be available with and without Conchos.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the interest.

The dimensions are 13” long X 6” thick. X 10 tall (This is one inch wider and 2 inches thicker than the Series I & II saddlebags.) This results in approximately 60% great capacity. Thirteen inches is the optimum length for bikes that have not had the signal lights relocated. Ten inches height gives sufficient clearance above the pipes even for bikes that have been radically lowered in the rear.

A lot of thought went into this simple product.

Best Regards,

Thanks guys, I'll make sure the Forum members are the first to know before I advertise them.

The Series II shipment only lasted a couple of days. It arrived at the peak of the riding season. I felt bad that more people didn't get a chace to order.

I had more of these made this time and it's winter. Half the continent is covered with ice so I'm sure they will last a while.

Here's what I've got so far:

Humpbackbob & Cdculbertson each want a pair.
loki03xlh wants one with conchos
bigjsa and Red Tiger want some with no conchos.

I'll let you know when they are available.

Hi,

The bags have cleared customs. The guys in Texas have done a random sampling and everything looks good. The bags will ship today if there is room in the UPS truck, otherwise they will go out tomorrow. I estimate that I'll be ready to start shipping this Saturday or the coming Monday.

So far I have:
Humpbackbob & Cdculbertson each want a pair.
loki03xlh wants one with conchos
bigjsa,Red Tiger, pauls05 and bobf want some with no conchos

I'll be meeting with several venders on the weekend of the 14th and 15th. I have some neat products we are working on I'll keep you posted.

Hi,

No problem. I ship to Australia all the time.

I'm pretty sure your next question will be how much does it cost? I'll know when I receive the bags in a couple of days. International shipping is expensive. I have to weigh a set of the bags in their final shipping configuration in order to calculate the cost. Every ounce matters!

Thanks

Just a little heads-up, be sure and enter the coupon code xlforum when you check out for your 15% Forum discount. It's interesting, about 25% of my customers don't use the coupon code. Every listing in the store mentions it at least twice.

Also save big bucks on shipping, order other items with the saddlebags I weigh everything together and send a shipping refund. Most light items ship for little or nothing when you combine shipping. ;)

Yep that's it. These are good gloves. I've been using a pair pretty much all year round for a few years. Your gloves will ship free with the saddlebags. The shipping calculator isn't "smart" enough to calculate the shipping discount when small light items are included with larger items like saddlebags so I send a refund.

Incidentally, the first load of saddlebags are in. They look good! I'm in the process of listing them in the store. I tend to get a lot of traffic on Friday nights. I can't modify the site while people are shopping so it might be late tonight before I am able to list the saddlebags.

The second UPS truck should be here shortly. (The UPS guys probably hate me when this happens :)

Hi,

That sounds like a large to me. Here is how I recomend finding the correct sizing for my gloves:

Measure your hand with a tape measure around the knuckles of your hand Measure your dominant hand - the right if you are right-handed, and the left if you are left-handed. if in doubt go up one size.

small------7 inches

medium---- 7½ - 8

large----- 8½ - 9

x-large--- 9½ - 10

xx-large-- 10½- 11

It's Monday morning, 9am and there here. I threw them on using the pre-punched holes but they need adjusted because of my luggage rack. I change everything so I'll be doing something different at the bottom of the bags to hold them against the shocks and stitching the splice under the seat. The thickness of the leather under the seat will require a spacer under the seat tab screw, I think. It's a brand new Mustang and I don't want to screw up the tab.

The quality of the bags seems top rate and I consider these a very good deal. The gloves I ordered seem to be a bargain too!!

Got mine today and they are on. They are bigger than I expected.Which is a good thing. Might have to do a bit of tweaking to get them to sit just so. I think I will try to attach the front of the bags to some part of the bike cos I feel that the wind is going to push them back. Maybe I have them seated to far forward as the front of the bags almost touch the rear pegs which makes the ties forward of the shocks, but they look best in that position.
I put the detachable luggage rack and back rest on with my other luggage that fits to it. Man,I am ready for some serious touring with this amount of storage.:tour

Had 'em delivered today. And I gotta say--AMAZING shipping speed! And they are also bigger than I thought they would be, which is to say they look like the PERFECT size!! Haven't had time to put them on the bike yet, but they look fantastic. Got a pair of gloves, too. :smoke

Don, man, this is pretty exciting to have some great looking leather saddlebags that didn't break my bank to buy. And I'm happy to support an XLF vendor. I'm glad I finally had a good excuse to do so! :p

Bigj,
Looks like you have yours seated very nicely. What holes, out of the nine on each half, did you marry up to on the yoke? Do you have a full side on shot to view where exactly the bags are positioned? Thanks.

BTW it was Bloody cold here in Austin This morning, specially at 5.00 am:)

This watcha looking for?

I had to tie the leather strings sideways towards the end of the yoke. Initially I had the knot on top, however it does not allow the seat to sit properly.

BTW it was Bloody cold here in Austin This morning, specially at 5.00 am:)

Bloody hell! I know, I found that out! I left SA and it was 58, got to San Marcos and it got colder and colder. When I got to Austin, I had to stop to warm up. Now that I have bags, I can leave my liner and winter gloves just in case this happens again!

Yeah, that's WAY too much ;) I found with the first holes and the seat on, the quick release edge is about a 1/2 inch out from the seat and the edge follows the line of chrome strip along the fender:

Nope. Too long. The bags are so low they are touching the Pipes. I've got them set using the first row and the middle row now. Are your shocks longer than mine on the 1200c? I am also setting the bags further forward than you cos if I move them back they are "flaring" out at the front. I have the Billet Shock Tower covers on mine too and they stick out more than the stock bolt heads. I think they are pushing the bags out. Moving the bags an inch or so forward seems to solve this.

I think Customs have lower shocks because I have a good 1" spacing on the right side above the pipes. Do you have stock pipes? They do bulge in the middle.

This is from the right looking at the pipes:

I went back in the garage and redid my yoke pattern. Instead of just straight across as the previous picture, I ran the leather strips in a cross stitch pattern. I started looking at the yoke of my previous bags and they were zig zag as well. I'm thinking this will help for more strength.

I put my two up seat back on the bike, bought a 1" SS screw and put it through the first hole in the yoke to secure it and the passenger hand grab. Also, the only thing I didn't like about the bags was the leather tie to secure the bottom of the bags, so I made a 10" quick release strap with velcro which wraps around the bottom of the shocks. Now it comes off quickly and I don't have to worry about the ends of the leather tie getting in to anything.

Hi,

Great idea! I am in Indy at the Dealer Expo meeting with several of my venders. We are working on product design of several new and existing products. Simple common sense improvements like this are what I'm always looking for. Let me know how this works out. If it still works for you after a few hundred miles I think we may have another design improvement.

For what it's worth, I just placed another order for the XL Series bags. I was able to keep the price the price the same. The wholesale leather supply situation is a little wierd and the price is going up. It's an interesting story. I'll tell it sometime.

Catch you later,

Don, thanks again for a quality product! I had both bags stuffed to the brim for my trip to the Mexico border this weekend. It rained the entire way down there and everything in the bags were still dry.

Question, what leather treatment you recommend? They are very dirty right now and I'll be washing the bike sometime. I want to treat the bags at the same time if possible.

Hi,

I'm glad you used them on your trip. I almost asked about it on the other thread. Sounds like a good time. :tour

I like to clean mine with saddlesoap then when they are dry I spray them down good with silicone spray (remember to hit the bottoms and backs).
After a year or so they tend to start loosing their shine. Personally I don't mind but if you want them to stay shiney give them a good coat of shoe polish.

The leather will last darn near forever if you take care of it.

bigjnsa
24th February 2009, 01:50
I could care less if they are shiny, I just want them to last ;) Ok, looks like I'll pick up some saddle soap and clean them when they are dry (from soap washing). With the silicone spray, do you leave it on or wipe it off when dry?

Also, on long runs I could smell the leather from the right side bags (over the exhaust pipes). I touched the bottoms with my fingers and they weren't hot to the touch, just warm.

The silicone pretty much soaks in however I give the part of the bags you can see a quick buff with a soft rag .

I don't anticipate any problems with the bags getting warm, just avoid letting them touch the pipes. I have put about 800 miles on the prototype pair so far with two ten pound weights in each bag. They have been fairly close to the pipes all that time with no problems.

I try to think of every way they might fail before a new design goes into production. :D

bigjnsa
24th February 2009, 02:12
Perfect! I had them pretty much at that load per bag. The right side was still about 1" above the pipes. Right side bag had a quart of Amsoil, tire gauge, shock tool, a pair of long johns, jacket liner and rain gear. Left side had assorted tools, roll of duct tape, 2 fuel cans with 32oz of gas each, hat (for helmet hair), and your gauntlet gloves.

As mentioned before about the tie down strap to the shock towers, it would be nice if it was a velcro ring instead of leather straps. Even when I have them tight the bags still move about an inch out. None the less, my 6 pack test still performs well and I haven't broken a can yet.

Your shocks should have no effect on where the bags sit in relation to the pipes. Your pipes, bags, and fender all move on one plane, and the swingarm/tire on another.
Look at the bags with no one sitting on the bike then have someone sit on it. The bags, fender, and pipes should all move together and the relative distance from each other should not change at all.

Still haven't had a chance to take pics but I have mine mounted on my Nightster. Had to get a little creative to make them sit and look right but I got it. I first mated the first two rows of holes together and mounted them like that. Had plenty of clearance on the exhaust but the rear of the bags hung lower than the front. Didn't have time to work it out then as I needed to be in San Antonio so I just loaded em up and took off.
Once I arrived at my destination and some of my BROS were admireing them one suggested I try crossing the holes in the yokes in a diagonal pattern, it is not a perfect match but the holes are close enough that I was able to lace them together and try it out.
EUREKA! :clap

Worked perfectly, it lifted the rear of the bags up so that the bottom is now about two inches above my exhaust. There is a little bit of flare at the front but it really isnt that bad. Am not going to monkey with it any more till I get my solo seat mounted with the rear fender I had the ECM hole patched on. Just got it back yesterday, have the primer and paint but I wont get to paint it till this weekend at least.. Also want to find another tail light to mount before I paint it.

Once I get the rest of my mods completed, (also have a new set of black Progessive 412's that I will be installing) I will see what I can do about reducing the flare at the front of the bags. Overall I am very satisfied with the Series III bags, Thanks Don. Perhaps on the next incarnation you should investigate punching the holes 1/16th - 1/8th of an inch bigger so that it the lacing can be passed through the holes a second time. You may also want to try punching them in a pattern that will mate a little better when crossed up as I have mine. I will take and post some pics tomorrow so you can see what I am talking about.

The site says you can go with or with out, but I was looking for a more definitive answer or explanation. If so, are there any supports that are removable or maybe use the HD quick detach hardware? Also, would a passenger have any problems reaching the pegs with the bags fitted? Thanks

Hi,

I sell these saddlebags so anything I say may be biased. I have run throw-over saddlebags on Sportsters without brackets for years with zero problems. In my opinion they are not required.

The advantage of brackets is that the saddlebags will be a little easier to install and the saddlebags will be more securely mounted. Brackets will also make it virtually impossible for the saddlebags to get tangled up in your rear wheel.

The disadvantages are: they look ugly and they are pricey.

Some riders won't mount a set of throw-overs without brackets some won't use them at all.

That's why I say you can use the XL Series bags with or without brackets.

I don't know of any removable brackets. Hopefully if there are some available the other forum members will chime in.

I've never ridden on the back of a motorcycle with throw-overs so I asked Dar. She says that her legs "kind of rest on the saddlebags and they are not uncomfortable". She is about 5'2, I suppose if your rider is shorter or taller that may make a difference.

Ride Safe!

one question though, does the yoke eventually damage the finish on the fender, worried about that leather eventually rubbing through the clear coat. or is there some sort of a thick plastic sticker that can be applied to the fender, kinda like the one the moco uses under the seat ? if there is can someone throw up a link ?

Hi,

I fixed the coupon. It should work now if you have any problems just let me know.

It don't know where you can find the "official" clear plastic paint protector but "Duck brand" clear duct tape works well for this purpose I think I found it at Walmart. On occasion I gouge my tank while installing and uninstalling my seat. I used it there. You might find the official version at Auto Zone or O'Reilly's.

As mentioned before about the tie down strap to the shock towers, it would be nice if it was a velcro ring instead of leather straps.
I saw your post right before I put my bags on. The leather tie downs are kind of a pain to tie down. I found some velcro "tape" at work that looks perfect for this. It has one side of the velcro on one side and the other side is on the other side ( sounds funny, huh? )
i am gonna remove the leather tie downs and put the velcro tape on instead.
Other than that, I love the bags. I already had them full to capacity and they worked very well.

Don, I've been meaning to ask you this.. Have you ever seen this with the bags? The left side is fine, however the right is bulging. They have been soaked a few times in rain, and each time I wash the bike, I treat the bags with leather cleaner and conditioner.

Hi,

I have seen this on leather and PVC bags. I'm not sure what causes it. I don't think it is water related. I suspect it was caused by the passenger or riders legs laying against the saddlebags.

I am working on a hard plastic insert that fits inside the bags and makes them fairly rigid. Unfortunately at this point the best deal I can find is spending several thousand dollars to have two molds machined then about $15 per set of bags on top of that for the inserts and installation. I have experimented with sheet steel and plastic but have not been able to find a manufacturer willing to produce a prototype or bid on bags with this addition.

Thanks for the info Don. Don't get me wrong, they still work fine and when they're stuffed full the bulge goes away. This is only when they are empty. Personally, I could care less what they looked like as long as they still function. Thanks again.

The phone is finally working (occasionally). I touched base with my vendor for an update on the latest XL Saddlebag shipment. The ship is scheduled to dock May 18, it typically takes about a week for a shipment to clear customs and about 3-4 business days for my products to reach me here in Missouri. My best guess for shipping time from me to you is the last week of May.

The advance orders are coming in hot and heavy. The offer ends May 29 and a limited number are available. Get'em while you can.

I just placed another order for larger delivery in late August. There should plenty to go around at that time.

Thanks

Ten inches height gives sufficient clearance above the pipes even for bikes that have been radically lowered in the rear.
What has lowering the bike got to do with clearance above the pipes?

Nothing unless you modify the frame. I get about a hundred emails each season asking if a particular set of bags will fit a bike that has been lowered. It doesn't hurt to mention it :)

I was told by one bag maker that his saddlebags wouldn't fit if I'd put shorter shocks on, because of clearance above the exhaust! The local Harley dealer tried telling me something similar. :doh

Hi Guys,

The latest shipment of XL SERIES III Plain Jane Saddlebags have been released from customs and are on the way to me. I plan to start shipping your orders by 5/25/09.

Our Canadian brothers and sisters will probably be interested to know that the Yahoo site had a bug in the shipping calculator that has been corrected. The calculator had been charging the higher non-Canadian international rate. A tip of the hat to Luke for letting me know about the bug!

I am also receiving my first shipment of Saddlebag brackets in a day or so. I'll have them listed soon. If you need brackets order them right away and they will ship for free with your saddlebags.

Remember to enter the code: xlforum in the coupon area when you check out for your 15% discount (good until the end of May).

I have been receiving very few orders from our friends up north on the Yahoo store. Now I understand why. International shipping is too darn high as it is!

The shipping calculator was charging the same amount regardless of if the order was going to New Zealand or Canada.

If the shipping costs were scaring you off please rest assured that it's working correctly charging at or a little less than USPS rates.

Hi,

They are $37.50 with your forum discount. I have been trying to update the web site, however when customers are shopping I can't modify the site (not that I'm complaining:) I'll be able to update it late tonight.

I have them listed on eBay for $39.95 plus shipping item # 380125725266 If you want to order them through eBay go for it, Let me know you are a forum member and I'll refund the price difference. They will also ship on May 26.

Another option is to call or email me at: DONC314@HOTMAIL.COM or call: 314-5507437.

The cell service is pretty sporadic here at present, they are running some of the towers off portable generators. If you don't get me just leave a message.

Ozark.

Thanks Don, but by relocating the turn signals I can no longer strap my 12 pack cooler to my fender. And since I don't have a passenger pillon, your series III bags won't work.

Do you need to relocate the turn signals only if you use the brackets, or are the Plain Jane bags different than the last group buy and require a relocation of the signals?

Thank you.

Just the bags you don't have to get the support brackets. They can go under your seat or passenger pillon. If you opt for the brackets, then yes, the signals need to be relocated.
