View Full Version : Installing Auxiliary Light Kit - difficult?
mpemulis 20th November 2006, 04:11 OK - it sounds like a number of you have installed the HD Auxiliary Brake Light/Turn Signal Conversion Kit (69463-06). I'm interested in doing this, but I'm NOT wrench in any sense of the word. :doh Is this something that a noob could install?
Thanks.
gusotto 20th November 2006, 04:25 I bought the HD auxillary light kit and it'll be a winter project.
Looking at the instruction sheet, the biggest thing is they want you to remove the gas tank. This is so the wiring can be routed under the tank.
Doesn't look as if it's very hard to install.
Just a good winter project.
dbd_1964 20th November 2006, 05:38 If you're talking about the kit that turns your rear turn signals into brake lights its "plug and play" You remove the seat to get access to a turn signal 'black box' and install the kit. It is in series with the bikes wiring. No splicing, or cutting or even taping required. . Will take about 5 minutes.
If you are talking passing lamps they will take a few hours but nothing to difficult. I've don'e both mods and Im by no means a mechanic. The instructions from HD really weren't bad.
chrishajer 20th November 2006, 05:50 69463-06 is just the plug in converter for the rear lights. It takes longer to remove the seat than install that thing. Super easy. Even a noob can install it.

dbd_1964 20th November 2006, 05:58 correction to my post. The passing lamps I installed were not HDs. I got them from J&P and a little different set up the the ones HD sells. Prior to installing them I bought the HD ones but sent them back when I found the J&P light bar. The one from HD still didn't look difficult to intsall and the instructions really were pretty good. Main reason I sent it back is because I found something cheaper and the turn signals were bigger on the one from J&P and I liked that too.
army_navy 20th November 2006, 06:47 Noob!!!!:laugh :laugh :laugh
Harterhog 20th November 2006, 07:02 I installed one on my '06. I ignored the directions to remove the tank and just routed the wires without removal. The hardest part was that there was scant room beneath the seat for the module. I cut away a bit of the plastic seat base to make room.
rshute4 20th November 2006, 07:13 it takes less time to install the module than it does to smoke a cigarette! you don't have to cut anything just remove the ICM (don't unplug it) just take off the 2 nuts lift it up locate the wiring harness (directly beneath it) and plug it in... fold up the wires and tuck it under the ICM put the nuts back on put the key in hit the brakes make sure it works, and put the seat back on.
Heres a tip, just buy the MODULE!!! you can get the red lenses cheaper out of the kit. I think the module alone cost me $30 (no instructions, no lenses) but the kit i believe is around 50 bucks (my dealer anyways) order just the module through zanottis and save even more.
mpemulis 20th November 2006, 08:19 Alright. Cool. Good info. I'm going to go for it. Zanotti's has them for $43 or so, which is good enough.
Slowly but surely I'm learning to work on the bike myself. Last weekend I even changed the sparkplugs!
Yeah. I know. Pretty Sad. Gotta start somewhere though. :D
Thanks everyone.
rshute4 20th November 2006, 08:38 You are not alone my friend! I'm anything but handy, i have learned to pull the carb, shim the needle, change the spring, drill the slide, and what not to do with the diaphragm, re-install the carb, adjust the idle, and air fuel mix, changed grips, reinstalled a throttle cable after knocking it off putting on the grips, adjusting the throttle cables... turn signal module, plugs, air cleaner... changing the oil, changing the tranny/primary Ive had the bike about 8 months now and i learn something new everyday which is why this forum is such a good place. Buy the service manual, the fix my hog DVD a few brews some smokes and don't be afraid to ask questions!
I have called a few of the AZ guys to make sure I'm doing stuff right, dodgenbullets even came to my house to teach me how to do the carb!
If i can do it, anyone can!
mpemulis 21st November 2006, 07:22 Yeah, I hear ya. I have the service manual next to the toilet for my, um, relaxation reading. And I also got the Fix My Hog DVD too.
I ordered the light kit btw. Looking forward to it.
Dave Mickley 21st November 2006, 14:14 I wanted to do that with my bike [turn the rear turn signals into running lights] and my dealer said it couldn't be done on my bike, only the new bikes. I guess having a 98 1200C does have its down side. Dave

Thanks to this forum and all the great members there are no downsides to our bikes… only great alternatives, suggestions, and answers. :banana
It can't be done by the Stealership on a 98. They have a different wiring harness. They changed the harness in 99 so it's a plug-in part. But fortunately you can do it with aftermarket parts from BikeTronics. (http://www.biketronics.com/catalog.html):clap
I switched over to LED turn signals so I needed to use their SmartEqualizer. Then I decided to do put the brake and running lights in the turn signals so I ordered the Tailbones kit from them. Nice and informative talking with them on the phone. I learned about them at the Myrtle Beach rally while talking with another vender who seemed pretty smart and a straight shooter. He claimed they were the best in the industry. I'm very happy with them.
When you place your order tell them you read about them in the Sportster Forum and was told that they would give you a free adapter harness when you order your Tailbones kit. Then you just splice your modules in and enjoy your new look.:tour
Dave Mickley 21st November 2006, 17:38 Thanks MrChet - I want to be seen front and rear. I added a led license plate
bracket and that helps but with the cell phone drivers I:tour want to be as visable as possible. Dave

Thats not true....I got one from my indy...for about 50 bucks. Plugs right in. I have a 2000 1200 sportster should work the same..everything always says 86-03 sportster
Edit: now that I have seen mrchet's post maybe not...But I could have swore it said it would work...hhmmmmm

Yep cell phones and cages. We had a gal here who killed a family of four in their car - burned to death because they could not get the jammed doors open after she rear-ended them on the freeway. State patrol knew for a fact she was on her cell phone - never even gave her a ticket. Cell phones in cages are legal weapons of death.
mpemulis 4th December 2006, 05:21 Update - I bought the kit from Zanotti's and did the install this afternoon. Piece of cake. Not a lot of space in there for the big-ass cable, but it ended up being OK.
I also put in a new Silverstar bulb in the front headlight, so now I'm a bright guy. :geek
Thanks for the replies.
