Today I come to 4 lane intersection and here a loud bike pull up in the left turn lane he kinda nods while revving up his bike. Its looks like a bobber style with ape hangers it says panhead on tank. I nod back and light turns green, I notice he aint turning left and I just lost my chance smoke this mfr who was acting all bad :( . Whats up with these BT owners wanting to race us sportys? I'll be ready next time a BT owner wants test the water and vow not to show any mercy on em.

Seriously... someone please explain this fascination of wanting to race other bikes at stoplights. No bike has ever pulled up next to me at a stoplight and tried to race.

Hmmmmmm...

Maybe it's because I'm almost always on backroads with no stoplights, very little traffic, and lots of open road. :shhhh

I've noticed that here too everybody gets the itch but when they taunt ya by revving up loud pipes and practically beggiing ya to spank em its dam hard to resist sometimes. Maybe I need loud pipes afterall and go all out do stage 3 send nrhs my heads :D .

I pulled up next to a guy about 3 years ago just to nod Hello.
He came back at me with "Get the F' away from me !!!!" So angry that it
almost knocked me off my bike.

As he was pulling away I saw his vest was reversed and I saw the Winged
Skull and Rockers underneath.

I've never pulled up to another rider since.........Behind, yes....Next lane, Yes
but never shared a lane at a light.

He acted like a prick, but let's be honest here- there's a personal space and pulling up at a light like that is definitely considered invading that space. It probably startled the guy.

Sort of like being around a "close talker"...

I'm with Clarinetcat, while I may pass other riders going opposite directions on long country roads, I rarely pull up next to one. And if anyone has tried to race me, well Congratulations hot shot :frownthre -- I wasn't even trying, that's not my thing.

Now, as far as Jimbo's experience goes, I size up other same-direction riders warily before engaging in any conversation or informal ride-alongs. There are a few dive biker bars on some of my routes that draw a few of the hardcore crowd. Most riders I come across, though, are either young guys out having fun or middle-aged suburbanites like me. If a girl is on the back (and especially if my wife is riding along), it's pretty much a lock we'll be chatting it up  at the stop lights.

I can't recall ever having an experience like hogdaddy had. However, I live in a biker friendly town and I will pull up next to anyone at a light on two wheels and that includes the local cops. Heck, they have seen me around for years, know who I am and where I live.

As far as racing goes, I don't race my bike while in town. I believe in the old saying, "You don't $hit at the table you eat at." It's a small community and lots of folks know me or know who I am, and I don't need a negitive reputation around here. So, while riding in town I play it by the book. I do like to hook up with other riders on the freeways, mostly in the HOV lane, and if they want to down shift and twist the throttle, well... It's ON!

Hmm... I've had guys pull up next to me in a lane just to ask me if I want to "run 'em." It's never offended me any. I've pulled up to others before as well. I've had guys check their rear view mirror and move to the right side of the lane so that I'd have room. Not all - you can sometimes scope out a guy who's enjoying being completely by himself and not yet up to a quick "Hello."

most of the time the guy on a bt who is reving his pipes and wanting to race is a noobie trying to prove he has bigger balls than you or impress his girlfriend , but it isnt limited to h-d riders. I go to a local resturant in the mornings to have coffee and it is pretty much the same crowed every day . so the local loud mouth informed me I should get a real bike like his kawasaki mean streak and I could ride with him and his buddys , naturally the whole table chimed in put your money where your mouth is and we went out and lined up on a blacktop road , 1 mile later I relieved him of $100.00 , the next day the rest of the gang thanked him for paying for there breakfast which I paid for with the money I took him for , he got pissed and hasnt come back since.
that is the reason to race:banana

and as a side note there are some guys in here who ride big twins that can give anybody a run for there money so I just wouldnt try to snipe just anybody simply because they are on a big twin its possible to get your lunch handed to ya.

It's probably an Arizona redneck thing.:laugh

My riding buddy and I race each other occasionally. We blew away a couple of BTs for fun awhile back. Since conversion racing is much more fun. No racing for money though.:D

Any feller on a big twin wanting to race a Sportster is an idiot.

Jimbo, 1%ers are a strange lot. I knew a Sons of Silence dude once and he was an interesting feller.

I see anybody with colors and I avoid same. Dude was probably armed, and most likely had a snootful of crank.

You are so right! stock for stock a Sporty 1200 with take a BT most of the time.
A good running Superglide may give ya a run in a full 1/4 mile though.
There are lots of very fast BTs around my neck of the woods so I wouldn't make any assumptions soley based on BT or Sporty at the stoplight.
I know a guy running around Portland,Oregon that rides an '02 Lowrider putting down 172hp at the rear wheel with a single S&S Super G carb and no funny gas or blower.
It's a very bad ass 124" build of the OEM motor in a very stock looking bike ;)
You better have a very very narly Sportster if you try and tangle with him :laugh

The Jims 120" makes 120hp out of the box,put one in a Superglide or Streetbob and look out!
My engine builder does a lot of S&S 124" builds and most are making in the 140-150 rwhp ranges.
Do the math,a Superglide or Softail std. weighs a bit more than a Sporty but 150hp is 150hp ;)

My conversion gets to 110 real quick. 115 = 6,000rpms. rev-limiter = 6,200. Speedometer = 120 so I figure it will do about 120. I can kinda feel 110 now so I don't intentionally go over that often. 110 is enough + it's rock steady there. I do get a kick out of jetting into triple digits.

I think it has to do, in part, "bigger is better" and thus is "badder", "cooler" and "faster". I own a Sporty Sport and a BT. Between the two, the Sport will take my BT everytime in the quarters. It delivers lower ET's and higher mph in the run. The nice thing about this is that "I know" my sporty is quicker than a stock BT and don't need to prove anything. Besides, I have had the pleasure of seeing a "racer" get busted for "exhibition of acceleration" by coming off the line next to me. I laughed and honked as I rode sanely past him. Sportsters have nothing to prove.

Alton Illinois is a biker haven. Lotsa clubs around here. Primary one is the outlaws MC. At least one outta three is patched. I've never had one bad runin with any of them though. Of course I dont encroach on any personel space though either. I do race occaisonelly but only when its initiated by the other rider at an open green.

That or someone pulls in front of them thinking that they're only going to be doing 20-30mph a few seconds from a stoplight, but instead they're going 60+.

I just never understood racing on normal streets, there's plenty of way out of the way places you could go where if you screw up then you'll only hurt the other stupid people. Plus there are tracks you can go to that have nights set aside so people can bring whatever car or bike they want to come race.

I'll pull up beside them at the light in the other lane usually. But crack the throttle a couple times and wink at em....

Sometimes they'll go for it sometimes just laugh it off, But they know what I mean,

I mean could you pull up beside a Camero if you were in a 5.0 Mustang, And not test the water ?? I mean come on Guy's !!!!!

The only difference in motorcycles and cars is that with motorcycles

Most BT think that because their motors are bigger that there bikes are faster. I can't stand BT THROTTLE JOCKEYS always reving up their motor and getting on it all the time but never going anywhere just make alot of noise. I have a good story to tell. Once i was at a bar and this guy says to me and my buddies that no ones bike could touch his BT so i said i would race him we went out to get on are bikes and his is a old shovelhead with a SU carb on it that hadn't been washed in about ten years. when we got to the place where we were going to race his buddy comes over to me and puts his hand on my shoulder and say's DUDE YOUR GOING TO GET BEAT BAD! i thougt to my self that this guy is high or his buddys bike is a total sleeper. Well it wasn't cuz i had him before i even hit second gear my buddy who was turning around in front of us when we went by him on his buell s1 even caught him and passed him. Then he even wanted to race again what a idiot. I also can't stand CATALOG RIDERS = guys that have every custom and chrome part avalible for their bike and show up at all the bike events like they are someone special but only have a few hundred miles on their bike. I have vented and now feel alot better now THANKS!

Nitro ,nice story and a very healthy vent. What we have in our motors seperates us from so many bikes. Even my spankin new vrod nightrod special although its agreat ride doesnt compare to the throttle response of my 88 inch sporty. Recently retired all the bikes to stoare when the temp het about 20f. Drove the rod down then fired up the fire breathing monster eating sporty and so gently applied the throttle to get it to storage...its an absolute hoot to ride and I had forgotten how much of a special creation it is to have a 150 hp sporty.....it was good to gettafix to hold me over till next season.

They like to get in a street race but challenge them at the track with witnesses and they are a no show. I've only seen one BT at our track and it was a real dragbike with 4 valve heads. My sporty was the first HD down our track when it open a few years ago. I hold the number of runs make by any HD there. It's not the fast'est but I'll go up against the bar/box bikes anyday.

I like to hit the dealer on Sat and see and hear all the trash talk in the parking lot. If anybody gives me any lip about my ride I just point at the track tech inspection sticker and say lets go and that's shuts they up.

Whats cracks me up is we had the Texas HOG rally here this year and guess who was the only HD to show up to race out of the thousands of bikes ????? You got that right.... ME. They contracted out the track for HD's only and it was a joke.

We got a few idot's with open pipes that speed down our street thinking it's a freeway making lot's of nosie. Looks like I'll be calling the COPS soon

The thing is..... with "HP" or someone wearing "colors"....., ya never know what they might be packin' ! Unless you have a fine tuned 1250 Kit AND a bullet-proof vest under yer jacket. Becarefull who ya pull up next to...... HP is HP and Firepower is Firepower. Wackos ride as well as drive cages and road rage is a bummer, anyway you look at it. Just like the smarter people in the sportbike crowd have figured out, it's a heck of a lot more fun (and safer) on a track.
