My boyfriend was looking at a Deuce today and this person took the stock turn signals off and installed turn signals on the forks. Has anyone seen these? They looked really cool!!!

Sandra lots of people here on the forum have moved
their stock turn signals to the forks, and others have installed
a set of aftermarkets such as kuryakyn. It's probably one
of the most popular mods out there. I moved the stockers
to the forks with a kit from JP Cycles. Here's a pic:

That is cool!!! These were in the same area but were little rectangles. That is my next upgrade!!!

I was looking at J & P and the installation kit has this warning on it... "Note: Installation of these accessories may be in violation of FMVSS Standard #108. "

What does that mean??

No idea what you may be violating, but here's a pic of mine. These are the Custom Chrome clamps which I got from Al's Cycles on Ebay. There are also brackets which bolt to the fork clamps, maybe someone else will provide a pic of those so you can decide which you prefer.

I'm doing mine tomorrow (monday) evening, if the relocation clamps come in from J&P.

FMVSS #108 is a federal statute that dictates location and spacing of signals. You must maintain a minimum distance between the signal lamp and the centerline of the bike. I'm not sure what the measurement is... anyone know? I'd kind of like to, as I'm wanting to do the same kit as xena, but don't want to give barney any excuses to watch me.

Just did mine about an hour ago. Turned out great, looks great. I used the J&P Cycle ones for 41 MM tubes (had already upgraded the stock front end to wide glide, 5 degree, 4" over). They come with very long bolts and some spacers that put the lamp housings out too far, IMHO. I cut the bolts down and used a very thin chrome washer for a spacer, no photos yet, maybe tomorrow will shoot some. The wiring was about 6 to 8 inches too long and I was able to pull them snug through some of the wire hangers and they tucked up under the gas tank very nicely without having to unbolt it. Did this with the intentions of replacing the handlebars one day with "T" bars.

:tour There is also a kit, Part No 68517-94A, you can get from Harley for about $29, I think they are mounts for a Dyna or Softtail. I used them on mine.
I went that route because I used the Custom Chrome mount to make a Hard
mount for my fork bag rather than the leather strap.;)

I just moved mine to where Xenas got hers. As well, I chopped the aircraft wing sized rear spacers down to 1 5/8" in length. Duece style. WAYYYYY sweeter. Once the Bobber rear fender`s added, gonna rock.

I think the regs state that the lights have to be 18" apart. Also, if you switch the signals, many of the aftermarker ones are no DOT approved. The regs are what they are, but most police officers are not going to waste their time issuing a ticket for a violation unless you are doing something else wrong. I removed the rear lights on my bike and put on a license plate frame with integrated lights. On the front I had these little LED's hidden under the controls. The bike looked clean. And I never so much as got a double glance and even was pulled over for loud pipes once.

I'd just take them off, they unplug under the left side of the tank...cleans everything up...

Here's the ones I used: http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup.aspx?GID=1ab0e7a9-e209-4962-992c-3799982a40a5
Here's a shot of them on my bike:

I bevelled the mount slightly with a gridner to allow them to fit a little tighter to the turn signal housing but otherwise they fit and work great (cheap too).

I personally think they (the turn signals) look way sportier on the handlebars........but hey, that's just my opinion. Let's do a poll !! (or has one already been done that I missed?)

How difficult is it to relocate the signals to the forks, meaning the wireing?

The H-D kit is a plug-in. About $30.

Tom,
I relocated mine without any wiring problems at all. The wires turn out too long so you have to conceal them, I just worked them up under the gas tank and did not even have to remove it. I used the J&P part #3300271 (41MM as I have upgraded the front end) or 3300270 39MM if still stock. I did not use the spacers that come with the brackets, stuck them out too far in my opinion.

What does that mean??

I'm a "newbie" here, but I hope it's OK to resurrect an old thread?! I'm going to do the front turn signal relocation when my new handlebars arrive, and the above comment caught my eye. I'm suspecting that we all don't give a squat, but in case anyone's interested I did find the DOT reg's for motorcycle turn signals: (FMVSS 108, table IV) :geek

(Front) Minimum centerline distance apart of 16", minimum edge to edge distance of 4" from the headlight, and at least 15" off the ground.
(Rear) Minimum centerline distance apart of 9", minimum edge to edge distance of 4 inches from taillight, and at least 15" off the ground.

I bought the Harley relocation kits for the front, and the layback license & signal relocation kit for the rear. The rear kit meets the regs but the front one doesn't quite meet the 16" minimum centerline distance. (It's gonna be about 14" I think)

I would think that the key reg that might get police attention would be the minimum 4" distance from the headlight -- any closer than that and I'd think the light from the signal would get "drowned-out" by the headlight and not be very visible. The Harley kit is fine in that regard. Ahh, and heck let's face it, the signals just plain look cooler there!! :D

I'm pretty sure the Sportster's have the 39mm forks, so I assume some of the other Harley models must have 41mm forks. :geek
