i am at work this weekend and bored to death.......so after reading every possible recent thread, i decided to go back and read through the begining threads to kill time. i noticed a few things: many of the original people who contributed the most to the original posts, i no longer see them post. i think a few have passed on which is terrible for guys like me (32 years old) to lose such valuable resources. for those that are new comers, there is a tremendous amount of information found back on those original posts. i went to the last page and started reading backwards. i didnt find this forum until 2006. i didnt know that IRONMICK wasnt always on an iron, and reading his original posts before he was even moderator and his struggles working the bugs out of his bike was very informative. i also learned alot from reading old posts by GARBIKER that are very informative. i believe he was around 69 years old in 2004 when he was posting so he must be mid 70's now? i loved one post where he was talking about riding a "highly" modified ironhead that would rattle windows and knock dishes off of kitchen tables. there just arent many guys around my way like that. seems everyone takes their bike to the dealership for an oilchange and to have the plugs changed. i do all of my work myself. i consider myself probably one of the younger guys on here (born in 77) but i have brought many bikes back to life all on my own. the info i read on here just helps us young guys keep these old bikes going longer and longer. my first harley was an 82 iron, but i was told my iron was a piece of crap etc and EVO's were "better and more reliable", and at the time i didnt know any better. i sold it and have owned 4 soul-less EVO's in the mix. i will never go back to EVO's. i have been hooked on irons for years and i love finding neglected ones and getting them back on the road. here are a few of my sporties i have owned of the past few years, i still own the bottom 2:

Gar is still around.. he pops in and out... I only found this forum a year and half ago as I started to go completely through my bike after is sat for 7 years while dealing with a drug addicted wife and I drifted away from all my riding friends.. ... a million dollar estate which she was executrix.. the death of my in-laws .. after I kicked her to the curb ... I needed to get my sanity back... my old bike filled the bill.. she is all shiny and ready for another 10 yrs of riding.. plus about 2 yrs ago I go back together with my 1st wife who I have known since she was 17.. we didn't speak to each other for 25 yrs... but we did a lot of riding together.. and she loved it...
I have been riding since I was 13.. when I was able to get on a Honda 305 Dream.. all white that belonged to a family friend Navy Lt Nancy Mahoff who rode that thing from San Fransisco to San Diego... in 1968 !!!! My next bike was a TS 250 Suzuki.. it was transportation only... soon after I got a '72 TR6C .. and more Triumphs after that.. and then a Sportster.. I have several project bikes .. 1965/66 CB450 Bombers.. a 1962 T-100SC .. and three 650s... I'd like to get a mid 70s Shovelhead.. or a R-90 BMW.. and I have my eye on a 1975 Norton Commando sitting a buddies garage.. he got a 1991 HD and the Norton is sitting..
I have always loved the smaller bikes because riding most of the time was around town or in 60 mile jaunts.. I didn't need a touring bike to go into town.. 650-1000 cc fits the bill.. they are nimble.. easier to maintain .. cost effective.. and run like a scaled dog... pure exhilaration.
I love em all... the next 20 yrs for you are going to be amazing... enjoy every minute.

Great posts, Tom and Jim.
I started at thirteen as well, first with a Honda 90 then a 160 and finally a 305 Dream. As I've mentioned in other posts, I bought the Sportster at sixteen. Yes, Jim, you are my doppelganger. The bike looks great, by the way.

Well I geuss that I have been around a good while here on the forum but, not as long as some I'd have to geuss. My posts are ready to hit 500 soon, never really cared about the number.
Just an american trying to survive in these desperate times hasn't left me with a whole lot of time to spend on the computer or wrenching on the bike. I have worked two jobs twice (I think) in the time that I have been a member here. I used to spend my summers wrenching but then the two jobs thing came along and now my major income has been cut. (laid off at day job)
We used to have a digital camera but the software wouldnt transfer to the new puter so now the cell is the one I use unless I borrow one.
I'm durn near 40 now and still striveing to make life liveable for my wife and I.
I can still recall my first post, it was about the front fork stud bolts. IronMick was the one to reply. Seems like a while ago and I'm still learning on a lifetime of Ironhead riding.

Most of those old posters were victims of the Ironheads vs Blockheads war.
If you do a search for Ironhead Mafia there might be some of those threads still lurking if they have not been deleted.
Seems like it happens on every forum sooner or later.

One thing i've noticed is us Ironhead blokes give and take critisism quite well. .most times its all in good fun. ..the occasional topic gets out of hand but in the end we are all here for 1 thing . . .to get that old mongrel of a bike running like a gem. Occasionally when all you blokes are snowed in and i'm bored witless i'll lurk into another forum on here. . .but i get sick of the asslicking that seems to go on over there and its quite rare i put in my 2 cents worth . . .you have the bloke with 23 posts and 6000+ rep points against his name because he fitted "aftermarket" tassled handgrips to his evo . . .pfffftttt :frownthre

I think that most of them were less victims than they just got fed up and left. It has been quite a loss to the Ironhead forum, IMHO. These things are not rocket science, but they can be cantankerous and the solutions to the problems can be difficult to sort out at times (often because there may be more than one problem).
Gar helped me out once with a problem I had, and I still feel like I owe him a debt of gratitude. Those "oldtimers" are worth their weight in gold.
Moonwolf & Jim: You guys have me beat, as I didn't start riding until I was 14. I started out on a Honda 50 "Super Sport" and thought it was the coolest thing since sliced bread. From there I graduated to a used Honda 250 Hawk (the predecessor of the 305 Super Hawk). Then other rides, until the Ironhead purchased 30 years ago.
I'm glad some of you guys are still around, 'cause I need help with the old beast now and then, and I don't have the time for "trial and error" these days, neither do I have the knees and the back for squatting on concrete for hours at a time, wrenching blindly.

i have only been on here since 2006 so i dont really know what you mean. by blockhead, do you mean ignorant people? what pissed the iron guys off? was the ironhead mafia about people that loved their ironheads and had to defend them all the time to EVO guys or something?

blockhead = evo, thats the "name" they got when the evo first came out
there was a few ironhead owners that would just go off on any evo owner who posted their opinions in the iron forums. why? who knows.

my first harley was an 82 iron, i have owned 4 evos since and 3 more irons. the evos always started, gave me reliable ride all day long and never broke down once on me and never gave me ANY problems what so ever. i respect them. but they never gave me the feeling of my original ironhead. i sold all 4 of the evo's and now i own 2 irons...a 77 (the year i was born) and a 74 (or whatever it is......lol) rigid that i am building now. i like to maintain them and keep them on the road. i had 3 883's and a 1200. i converted all 3 of the 883's to 1200. they are easy to do and alot of fun but something was missing to me.........i love my 77 to death. i will never sell it! i bought it in 4 boxes and put every nut and bolt on the whole bike and motor together myself. there is just something special about that............

I have been on this forum since 04 I think but really didn't start posting until a couple of years ago. My first bike was my '76 XLH and 10 years later I bought the '79. At this rate I might own an EVO in another 30 years or so....
