So I can't ride it for another month or two, but I pulled the trigger today on the KTM 990. I tried to resist up until the very last minute but it was a futile struggle....I had to have it! Getting it delivered on Monday :D

Keeping the Sporty still just so I can hang out here and won't have to completely move to the adv riders' forum and make (more of) a dork of myself trying to look cool among people that ride from California to South Africa on a daily basis :laugh

Yes sir, the Adventure! Nobody gets close to this bike, I've booby-trapped the garage and have hired the national guard to keep anyone (including myself for a couple of months) out of there :D

So, when is the big road trip?????

Thank you :) The trip was supposed to start in April, but my doc had a minor heart attack followed by a not so minor tantrum when I mentioned the word motorcycle :laugh It's been rescheduled for August instead, so I will be coinciding the start of the trip with Sturgis and Ed (and anyone else who wants!) will be coming along for the first 2 weeks of the trip. I'm stoked. I will also be setting up a web site for the trip to keep a journal and gather pics on etc, I'll keep you guys posted if you want on where that will live once it gets closer to take-off :)

I tried to get on a KTM Adventure a couple of years ago. I needed a friggin' step ladder, my legs just aren't long enough. Cool bike though. Congrats.

See Joe, that's why I need to break it in for you. The springs will sit a little lower with a few miles thousand on them. I'm only trying to help.

Haha c'mon Bill... Granted I don't exactly flat foot on it, but even with the regular seat you can tip-toe around on it, unless you sat on the "R" version which is 3" taller, that one was out of the question for me too. I did get the lower gel seat for it though

It was the R version. And it really wasn't so much the inseam length, but because of my bum knee I couldn't swing my leg over it. My son races a Honda 250 CRF in the desert races, and I can't get on that one either.

Hey Joe, I just thought of something. Now you should be able to keep up with me. Don't believe what those Fat Bob guys say, they are actually slower now.

Heal up fast.

Hey now :) I still have a few years of riding experience to make up for too! Though leaving the Couch Bobs in the dust shouldn't be too hard ;)

It eats tarmac, drinks whiskey and water. And it rides pretty well too. :laugh

Be sure to post a pic of the hideous beast when you get it today. :P

Thanks man! MSRP is 14.4 so with all the usual crap and taxes they wanted ~17 OTD. I took it home for a bit less than MSRP and a few services thrown in.

That's really not bad. Question, why did you chose it instead of a GS? Not to pick fights, I'm just asking because its in the same market as the GS.

Oh trust me, I eyed it for a while too... Along the way leading up to the buy someone said to me: "If you care more about getting to your destination than how you get there, get the GS". I think that about sums it up for me. The GS is a nice bike, but I like to feel and hear that it's a bike I'm sitting on, the KTM has more of a raw feeling to it, while still being pretty refined in functionality. That said, it's a close call. If you know you're gonna do lots and lots of miles on the interstates and just marginally elsewhere, the GS would have probably been my pick. I anticipate about 50-50 for myself.

For you, I guess it'll work-you've always been a kinda "one off guy"

Now XLXR's gonna have to go for that crashed Uly. He won't be able to stand it.

FWIW, he goes faster on the dirt than in the twisties, so don't try to hang with him.

When you're up to it, we need to get up some kinda dual sport ride in the dirt. Since min'es only a 225, I'll have to throw it in the truck or somethin' to get there, though.

The more money you give this guy, the better your bike will be. Especially in the suspension department. He does not work cheap. He set up my old 2 stoke KTM dirt bike.

Cool - the guys over at the adventure riders' forum mentioned them, and also:

http://www.precisionconcepts.net/
and
http://www.superplushsuspension.com/

for the 950/990 specifically. I might check out Precision Concepts when I'm able to ride again just because they're closest

Kewl! At least you can still get bugs in your teeth.

Jo should buy the DualSport/Hwy combo one that the chin guard detaches.Use with goggles or face shield. Great price, but can't remember the make. Highly rated on adv.rider
