View Full Version : Checked my gas mileage today.
Gary7 17th December 2006, 21:58 My 07 883 has 560 miles on it now, so when I filled up today I checked the gas mileage for the first time. I went 113 miles on 2.1 gallons of gas, or 53.8 mpg.
That's better than I expected. About 60 miles of that was on the Interstate running between 60 and 70. The rest was cruising backroads at 45 or so.
Rascal 17th December 2006, 23:42 Have an 2002 XL883, got 50 mpg the one time I checked. But, it's winter time here and lot more warm up time, probably better on longer trips. I'll check it again sometime.
rharrison356 18th December 2006, 00:10 thanks for posting. In that kind of riding, I get around 45 on my 07 XL50. Since new, I have ranged from a low of 36 to a high of 48. Since the stage 1, mpgs are down--but that might be due to more exuberant riding. Also, waiting to get the bike dialed in on the dyno...
jpar05nm 18th December 2006, 02:37 I get 50 to 56mpg depending how hard I ride.

That sounds about the same as I get on my '07 883 if I do highway driving (which isn't often). I usually get about 45-50 mpg with my normal weekend riding (lots of back roads and a few small town stop and goes). If I'm really romping on it...well it goes down to maybe 40. Also, my commuting is all stop and go and for that I get 40-45 mpg.
Congratulations on getting to the 500 mile break-in point. Now go ride it like you stole it!! :tour
yorgo 19th December 2006, 03:25 Is it me or does it seem like the EFI models get horrible gas mileage compared to carbed Sportsters?

I must be riding mine way too hard, and having too much fun as I haven't cared what mileage I've been getting and haven't taken enough time to think about it in 3000 miles. One thing I can say is that I have a permanent smile as i twist the local loops and wait for the fuel light to say "feed me".
Life is great isn't it?
racerwill 19th December 2006, 04:51 my '91 883 (bored to 65cid) with added compression. gets re fueled every 110-120 miles and fits about 2.3 gals......when its cold (like now) it gets better cuz I don't ride it as hard.....

Carbs tend to "atomize" fuel better than EFI, though the newest "super fine" injectors (Kawasaki ZX-10 for example) are pretty darned close and the next generation of "super ULTRA fine" injector nozzles (next generation ZX-10 injectors) might well equal carbs. It might not be much difference, but with 3,000+ "squirts" of fuel each minute, even a tenth of drop adds up. And the EFI could be programmed just a tick richer or leaner, leading to adverse mpg. Heated carbs (water heated on the CBR900RR's and electric on Triumphs) makes a noticeable difference in mpg at a slight loss in power. My re-geared CBR900RR (for sale!) regularly gets 70-75 mpg in warm weather.
I have not "accurately" checked my '07 1200R yet due to the feaking weather, but it looks like my first tank+ is going to be about 40 mpg (or less - ouch!). 38-40 degrees surely hurts efficiency on an air-cooled rig and it's still pretty tight, just hitting about a hundred miles. That throttle is too much fun also..........
firebrick43 19th December 2006, 16:19 I have been seeing 52 mpg steady at a 50/50 mix of town/country riding for over 4000 miles now. I have not ridden in any weather over 60 degrees however and this probably lowers it somewhat. As Mr Wood alluded to the injectors are very close to the intake valve, not alot of time to mix thoughly with the air stream like a car with long intake runners, particullary in cold weather. Also maybe some of your carbs are running lean which the EFI adjust for this.
Why are people with carbed bikes putting their MPG on a EFI forum? It just clutters things up and is not the topic on this specific forum.
ed_in_az 19th December 2006, 16:43 I think the :censor thunderslide kit the dealer put on my bike hurts the mileage, plus I can't control my throttle hand. So ... I get 40-45mph.
But I don't care.:tour

Easy. Switch to Syn3, pop in a K&N replacement air filter element and stick to speeds around 45 to 50 mph. No quick take-offs either. (In other words, you'd probably have about as much fun on a scooter. ) :)
I used to average 60 to 65 mpg on my 04 883 when riding slow like that, but it's a lot more fun to rev it up a notch or two.
The best I've seen on my 07 XL50 is low 50's, but it's barely past the 500 mile break in period. Not to mention it's a lot more fun to pour it on.
