Police Say Teen Intentionally Hit Motorcycle In Lakewood

March 17, 2005
By Keith Eldridge

LAKEWOOD - A mother was horrified to hear that hit-and-run accident that nearly killed her young son and his father is believed to have been intentional. And police say our story 10 days ago helped them make an arrest.

"(They) almost killed my son and his father, could have," said Victim's mother Annika Dean. "They are so lucky."

It was unbelievable -- a hit-and-run driver knocked a father and son from their motorcycle.

"And this car ran a red light and he smashed into the front of the motorcycle," said 8-year-old Alex Doyle. "And then the next thing I knew we were on the ground just laying there."

Their helmets saved their lives, though Alex's father was knocked senseless and can't remember anything.

We reported the exclusive story from the Lakewood intersection last week. This case went unsolved for days, but after our story aired, the suspect's girlfriend became alarmed. She tried to get him to give himself up. When he didn't, she turned him in.

"We're attributing that to the media attention," said Lt. Bret Farrar of Lakewood Police. "We got a phone call from somebody who was actually in the car who tried to convince the driver to turn himself in, but that wasn't quite working itself out."

When police arrested 19-year-old Jacob Hyneman of Kent, it came out that during a fight with his girlfriend as she pointed to the motorcycle, he intentionally hit it.

"They were fighting and she said: 'Wouldn't that be funny if that was my ex-boyfriend?' " Annika Dean said. "That made him mad and he ran right through the red light and purposefully hit them and took off."

Lt. Farrar says, "He may have an anger management problem and that's probably one of the things the court will discuss." (Ya think??!!)

Hyneman is in jail charged with vehicular assault and failure to stay at the scene of an injury accident.

"It's horrible," Annika Dean said. "It's disgusting to me that somebody would purposefully hit a motorcycle because they were mad. It's disturbing."

She shutters to think what could have happened to Alex and Pat just because police say a jealous boyfriend took his anger out on innocent victims.

Never let your guard down...always keep scanning your surroundings...try to have one or more escape routes...I'm sure (or at least hope) that this is an isolated incident, but do attempt everything you can to minimize injuries!

You only got part of it wrong, he is not a man but a child in an adult body. He has no self control and is therefore a child.

I think you've hit it (no pun intended!) squarely there Wardog. There are so many children having to raise THEMSELVES these days (and over the past couple of decades), THEY/WE don't stand a snow ball's chance in that really hot place of them actually ever GROWING UP. No one's teaching these people how to be an adult and actually coexist with everyone else. :madtwo

Hit an run is far more common than we think. Mostly at night when witnesses may be minimal.

Here's a crazy story: In the desert here in California, a member of the Hells Angels M/C was on the 210 freeway heading home when he was accosted in traffic by two brothers in a sport truck. At first the Cops blamed the M/C Member but after real research and when witnesses stepped up (an old couple testified that they saw the two brothers going after the biker and then rammed the side of his bike), the M/C was released.

The two brothers and the Biker got into it on the freeway (nobody knows the real reason why) AND THE BIKER BROKE DOWN! So the Brothers pulled over to fight the Biker. One Brother ended up dead (stabbed through the heart) and the other seriously injured and the Biker was cleared in self defense later on. It was a big story on the news out here. Two college punks took it to a level they had no business taking it to and lost. The Biker later said that they bashed into the side of his bike closing his carb and it died. He crusied to the side and they followed him and wanted to fight. Two against one. But in this case the one with an equalizer won.

Always stay alert no matter what!

And neither does the Vagos M/C...We get so many college punks who have a few too many and want to test a Biker. In most cases, it is the college punk who has yet to experience real life. I saw a situation in Sunset Beach, CA at a local tavern (beer & soft drinks only joint) on PCH where a young punk and his cheesecake girlfriend had an argument. The kid got drunk and the chick ended up with another Bro at the bar.

Well in the end, the drunk kid with a big mouth got his nose broken and woke up alone in his Jetta later on and his girlfriend (Sherri) ended up on the back of a nice custom Shovelhead on down the road with a Bro named Chuco.
