... it is a feel thing, i am told. We want just a little bit of slack in there. Just how much? I get the part about being able to turn the p-rod with finger tips.

"pushrod should have a slight amount of play or shake ..."

Would this be up & down movement or side to side movement? Is it movement of the p-rod only, or does it count as movement if the adjusting screw moves with the p-rod, which would be a tighter setting?

What does too loose sound like compared to too tight? Where does just right fit in the sound spectrum?

I think i had them too tight the last time - got some noise in the rocker boxes. I think i have the rear good now as it is pretty quiet there, but then the front exhaust was clacking so i think it was too loose. I'll check it out in the AM - don't want the neighbors to hate the Cycle Shack turn-outs before the season even begins here.

Mick, As you adjust them too tight and try to spin the push rods with your finger tips they will feel like they drag a little. As you loosen them they will spin and feel like they glide. From this point they need just a little shake. I just try to shake or wiggle them and feel for the slight movement. Try going from tight to loose a little at a time and you can feel the difference.

I make mine with no side play. In fact, no wiggle at all.I Make sure that there is oil on both ends of the p-rod, then adjust 'till there is no wiggle at all. You want it to turn with no drag. It'll almost spin. You'll know when you have it. The rod will spin very smoothly. You'll know that there is no metal to metal contact. I run mine a little tighter that BobbyB. But his way is just fine.
