I didn't think Kimber was around that long. Weren't they founded in 1979?
Never mind, I thought the OP said his dad carried it in WWII. My bad.

Nice!... Here is my companion. I'm am in dire need of a good holster for it though. Been looking at rigs from El Paso Saddlery, and the Milt Sparks summer special as well.

Here is my Kimber Custom... Not that pretty, but its a fine shooter.
I have over 47k rounds through this pistol and it still chews it up and spits in the right direction.

Have you looked at TFO sights from TruGlo? I highly recommend them if you ever want to look at changing your sights.
I ended up dulling the rear sights because they were so bright, helps me focus on the Front sight (the most important part of Front Sight, Press).
I carry in a C-TAC from Comp-Tac. Its Kydex so it doesn't smell like a soggy dead animal after weeks of carry in the Houston humidity.
I would also recommend kydex from Bladetech or SideArmor, but I prefer Comp-Tac.
There is nothing like the feel of a 1911 :smoke
