There are also concerns that some larger calibers, or those used by military-type weapons, could be banned, restricted or taxed more heavily.

One northern Warren County resident found out recently the government is paying attention to such ammunition sales.

West said a customer of his recently stocked up on .223-caliber rounds, a caliber often used in assault-style weapons. The customer bought 1,000 rounds a few months ago through a mail order company.

Shortly after the purchase, he received a visit from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, whose interest was apparently piqued by a large-scale purchase of that caliber.

"His wife was home. He was at church," West said.

That actually sounds like ignorant gun shop "friend of a friend" banter from West.

I know a lot of people who buy ammo in lots of 1000 or more, I've done so myself (heck, I've ordered lots of 5 or more rifles to be shipped to my house at a time when I had my 03 FFL) before the Obamanation craze.

On the other hand, if .gov is actually checking up on how much ammo people are purchasing and paying visits (I sincerely doubt it), the end might be closer than people think.

guess the BATF didnt see my paperwork. I received a pallet of 10k rds of .223, 5k rounds of .45acp, 500rds of 50cal and 500rds of 30.06.

Been two months since it got here, still no suites at my door.

It's like the Waco deal or Randy Weaver.
You bring attention to yourself,by doing stupid stuff, and they may come see you for 1 box of shells.
You live a normal life, don't associate with the wrong people, don't go to militia websites, don't sell illegal firearms, and such, and they could care less how much ammo you buy.

There are lots of places to order bulk ammo from, here are a few I've used in the past.

http://aimsurplus.com/

The sad part is that it used to be much cheaper for me to shoot surplus 7.62x39, .223, 8x57 mauser, 7.62x54r, and even 7.62x51 NATO than it was to feed my .22 target rifle with ELEY match ammo. Not anymore- high demand has either dried up supply or quadrupled prices.

edit: I forgot one site that I love: http://www.odcmp.com/

CMP (formerly DCM) was set up by congress to train civillians in marksmanship and sell surplus GI small arms and ammunition. The Ted kennedys, Chuckie Schumers, and Diane Feinsteins of of our government absolutely hate this program and would abslutely love to shut this organization down.

If you've never shot an M1 Garand and are interested, do a web search of gun clubs in your area and check to see if they hold CMP or DCM matches, then call the match director. They will usually lend you a M1 Garand, ammo, and coaching for a fairly nominal fee ($15-20) to shoo the match. Lots of fun.
