I'm considering changing the Derby cover on my 07 1200R, but not sure if it's going to be worth the $$. IMO the factory cover is ridiculously ugly, chrome or blacked out like the rest of the engine would look much better. I've also noticed that my boots must rub up against the cover quite a bit, since it is scuffed up. Which is the reason I think a blacked out cover may work better. I'm just curious (and bored since I'm stuck in a hotel on a layover) if any of you have changed the derby cover on the blacked out engine.

No, but I've thought about making the same change.

Anyone happen to know the part number for the stock derby/inspection covers that come on the 883r?

I've looked in the big book and haven't seen any wrinkle black sets for the sportster, so stock 883r parts may be the way to go.

BTW - I did add the finned covers over the pugs and am very happy with that addition. It really fills out the look of the engine:

Yes they will *I asked*. All the black parts from the 883R will fit on the 1200r. And they can order those parts for you!!

Does anyone know if you have to drain the tranny before the derby cover comes off ? Will the fluid stay in if you don't drain it first ? I just want to put my new bitchin skull cover on.

Just get the bike as upright as you can. I place a piece of 2x4 under the jiffy stand and that does it for me. No spills. Enjoy the skull cover.....

I'm gonna do the black like I did the air cleaner cover. I already did that little plate. It will look much better in black. You could get the black finned one too, though.

No problem

Best to Buy an inch pounds torque wrench if you don't have one. $24.95 from Harbor Freight And a New # 27 torx bit. Do not use an old bit as the screws tend to strip.Cover will come with new screws that have been locktighted.

Follow the pattern otherwise you can warp the cover and produce a permanant leak.

Torque to speck and your good to go. No need to drain primary just have a friend hold bike upright. If not you will loose about an one oz. of fluid. No biggie.
