I was looking through one of my reference books, Encyclopedia of Harley Davidson Motorcycles from '98 through '01 they call the XL883C as a XL53C.

I've never seen it referred to by that name anywhere else. How is it listed on the actual title?

P/S: special thanks to Jiminy Cricket for remembering how to spell encyclopedia!

53 cubic inches is @ 883ccs. I wonder how they classify the ironhead 883s?

57 up to 85 mostly XL, XLH,XLCH, XLT, XLCR, XLS, (up to '71 were 54ci. 71-85 were 61ci)

86-87 XLH 883, XLH 1100

88-95 XLX 883, XLH Hugger, XLH Deluxe

96-97 XLH 883, XLH Hugger

IN '98 to '01 they listed XLH 883 Sportster , XLH 883 Sportster Hugger,
XL53C Sportster Custom 53 - but says it has a 54ci EVO ?

The XLH 1200C however was never listed as a XL73C.
Book only comes up to 2001

I know it isn't really a big deal I just had never seen them listed that way.
Just thought it was interesting. Sorry didn't mean to make this a History lesson. :tour

Doing a quick conversion gives:

54ci = 885cc
53ci = 869cc

So the 883cc should be called 54ci.

Since so many folks here reference an XL50, I always assumed that 883cc was close to 50ci. Oh well.

XL50 is used for the 50th Anniversary bikes - nothing to do with displacement.
