View Full Version : 4 piston calipers on a rigid mount?

Are there any Factory (not necessarily off an XL) 4 piston calipers that will work on a rigid sportster? What is needed to convert to the newer XL 4-pistons calipers?

Ok, when I first read your post I start to assume you didn't realize that the solidmounts had 4-piston calipers from 2000-03, but then it appears you do by the second sentence.

So what are you asking.

1. Can you adapt the 4-piston calipers from a BT to an early-model solidmount Sporty?

Probably, it's all in the fork lowers. If they have the same diameter sliders, no problem. And/or if the bolt pattern is the same, shouldn't be an issue. Rotor diameter (if different could be).

2. Can you adapt the 4-piston calipers from a late-model solidmount Sporty to an early-model?

Same answer.

Good point Kev
from 2000 on Sporties have 4 piston calipers.

Performance machine are about the only ones that will bolt straight up on the old fork lowers... and are the easiest/cheapest option if you don't have access to decent machine shop.

The later model 4 spots (used on 2000-2003 sporties and >current twincams) have a different hole spacing..

The main problem with tryin to fit them to the pre '03's is the wheels are different which changes the clearance... later mag wheels have thinner spokes and the hub is slightly wider.. this gives enough clearance for the inside of the caliper between the disc and the mag wheel...

someone makes an adapter to fit 2000-2003 4-pots to the earlier fork legs (custom chrome, chrome specialties..... it's in the catalog)

BTW. the 4-piston caliper in 2000-2003 is the same caliper used for BT's (and current BTs)

I don't get why they made the change to the 2-pots on the boneheads then.

Jenn's brakes aren't bad on the 883L, but I'd definitely like better. And I've got buddies with single 4-pots on the front end of late-model Dynas who say they're just fine (and I mean hard riding buddies who know what a good disc feels like). So WHY did they change to a less capable brake. :frownthre

I would really like to get some more information on this adapter. Possibley a part # or link to where I can buy it. I have dual discs in the front, do they make it for that? I would REALLY rather go with a factory 4 piston instead of some billet chromey thing.

If anyone has an 00-03 frontend off a 1200S, I would be delighted to take it off your hands

I found some at wilwoods at trak-tek "dot com" (I don't have enough posts to post a URL) and they seem to be a pretty good deal

I would probably paint them with some Textured BBQ paint or something if I bought them though. I would still like to find out if someone has a link or part # to what I need to fit the factory style 4 pistons.

Here is a link to a UK based company that do bolt on 4 and 6 piston calipers in a choice of finishes.

Not cheap, but they have been around for a long time and are highly regarded in the UK.

My PM's (Performance Machine) 4-pots work great, bolted right up.

Oh yea, 2003's and earlier are "Solidmounts"

"Rigid's are bike with no rear suspension. !!!!!

There is a forum member here (blueglide88) that put a 4-piston roadking caliper on his rubbermount sportster. You might want to find an old post on it or PM him. I'm not 100% sure, but I think they bolted right on, but he needed a bigger master cylinder. It would be best to ask him.

I just finished this one on my '91. I bought a standard '00-03 caliper, and a lower leg for the same year range. All of the internal fork parts fit into the later leg, and everything lines up fine as far as the caliper is concerned. I'm planning on putting some mileage on it if the rain ever stops, and I might run a late model (9/16") master cylinder instead of the stock 5/8" that's on it. I'm going to wait and see how I like the feel of the current set-up first.

If you want to adapt the '00-03 caliper, check with Storz Performance - they have a bolt on kit for earlier Sportsters. Looks nicely designed, but it starts at $73.50 plus freight. I'm in mine for a total of $83, and it doesn't look "adapted".

Now, who's interested in a right hand caliper for the '00-03? I had to buy the pair as take offs...

I have 6 pot jbrake bolt on. It has a great big pad and it is strong enough to do a stoppy.
