View Full Version : I have sinned greatly, and need forgiven.

I must admit that I've sinned against all things Sportster.

I rented a BT for four days and rode through Arizona, California and Nevada.

I rented a '05 Heritage Softtail through EagleRider in Phoenix. All I have to say, is, darn, is that a nice bike. I'd compare it to a '74 Chevy Impala, a super smooth boat like ride, even at 80+ mph (with plenty of twist left in the throttle). Fuel Injected (it never farted! no enrichener! never stuttered on a cold engine!) Big fat puffy seat that just cradles your butt, unlike my 883L's seat, which shapes your butt to fit it. But yes, it also handles a bit like a yacht. A no-problem turn on a Sportster may create scraping noises on a heritage as I found out, which didn't scare me too bad. Overall though, I was impressed that it handled a lot better than I thought. I was expecting something much more dump truck like, but it suprised me how readily it would turn and manuever. However, a 135# guy riding a 600+# bike needs to know, at ALL times, just which way it feels like leaning. Comparison? A Sportster is more like a '74 Corvette, rougher riding, but appealing in a whole different way. :D

My route was, from Phoenix, I-10 to Blythe, Ca, for an overnight (hit the only rain and hail of the trip) then north on US 95 along the Colorado River crossing over to AZ 95, then back to US 95 to Vegas. Incredible Scenery! With my body still on EST, I woke up at 5am local, and decided, I'm going riding! So off I head, north of Vegas, up to Rt 375 and the Extraterrestrial Hwy! Yep, I'm going to Rachel, Alien / Area 51 center of the universe. THAT was a ride- beautiful scenery.... stopped at the Lil Ale'inn for some postcards. Didn't see any aliens or UFOs, but a few fighters playing around, since it was Red Flag excersizes, Nellis looked like a hornet's nest of activity when I rode back down into vegas. After that night in Vegas, and losing only about $5 gambling (gambling boooooorinnnggg!) its back to Phoenix to return the bike (taking the long way, of course). Traffic in Vegas wasn't that terrible on bike. So, rode across Hoover Dam, then to Kingman where I stopped at the Stealer for a HD Shirt then along 40, then a short detour on to 66- wish I could have done more 66, but not enough time to go to the Canyon. Then down Rt. 89 to I-17, then back to Phoenix to return the bike.
BTW- traffic in Phoenix absolutely s*cks. But I found it better on a bike than in a car. Just watch out at those stoplights.

It is incredibly easy to put 300+ miles a day on the Heritage. All in all, over the course of my four day rental, I put on 1325 miles. Not Iron Butt material, but by far the longest ride that I've done. Didn't really ever feel tired or woreout when I got off the bike. Riding the Heritage convinced me to get a quick detach windshield for my sporty. Made distance riding at speed pretty nice, but I still think they're ugly on a Sportster. Don't think I'm ready to drop $15-18k on a softtail yet.

You guys out west really have it good. Incredible scenery, and great weather most all the time. Renting the bike wasn't real cheap (about the rental of a really nice car) but worth every $$. Not a better way to see the scenery out west than a bike! I want to do it again, and take more time! :D

Looks like you had a great ride. I've sinned too in the past (http://www.xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?t=81) and it's nice to come back home and take the Sporty on some twisties again.

Yes that is... you can't see it, but it also has a UFO hovering over it. 375 to Rachel (and many other roads) are free range cattle areas. Every now and then you cross a cattle grate (metal bars cattle cant walk across), which means "The Cow/Steer/Bull has the right of way, esp. if you're riding a bike" You see them along side the road.... I imagine they would be a far worse danger at night, when the road is nice and warm, and its harder to see a dark object..... :yikes

Oh yeah, I took out a Brahama Bull at night one time in a mini-pickup. Wasn't any fun; couldn't imagine coming up on one at night on a bike. :yikes is right!!!!

You'd better believe it..................that spat would make you a cow pie real quick.

I guess I've just been in the Big City too long. We do have duck crossings at the local parks. :wonderlan

Not a problem, no sin at all. I plan on renting a BT sometime this summer and doing the Inland passage in the Pacific Northwest .

...I'm destined to eternal damnation.

I have a EGlide parked next to my Sporty.

Different bikes for different purposes. I shoot around town and the local area on the XL and use the bagger for cruises and "wifey comfort".

We are hoping to take a west coast trip this year....plan to spend a month roaming around out there. It's our intention to include much of what you saw in our journey.

Thanks for the review and great pics.

Hey Alleydude,

Yeah...I saw the posts on the other forum. Looks good. Glad you got it back on the road. BTW.....I think it should be black.....just my opinion.

How's the Sporty coming along after the trash can attack?

I must confess I have a Dyna and not a Sporty now either. Not a big diff, it's not as fast, it doesn't get blown around in the wind as much, and there are way more aftermarket mods for it.

Still, when I'm really riding it and not talking about riding it, it doesn't really matter what's under me much. The ride is all that matters.

Black, aye...? Maybe black and ORANGE, but straight black, not for me. :D

The '04 is fine, waiting for a bit nicer weather for the Alleybabe to take it out again. Nothing major was broke except the fork stop. Other than that and a dented tank, it's still in great shape, surprisingly. Thanks for asking.

We lost a rider last year on a Gold Wing. They came around a curve and there was a cow in the road. he went off the side of the road to avoid it and didn't make it through the accident. I used to live in free range country and man it can be nerve racking.

Great story and awesome pics. To anyone who hasn't been to Hoover Dam, GO!!!

Mark I've covered pretty much all the same ground a number of times and would agree Nev. , Ca. and Az. have some great riding if you like long stretches of road.Don't feel bad about the sin thing :laugh I've ridden a couple of Heritage Softails and they were not bad but no comparo to the Eglide. The Eglide has far better ground clearance, handles much better and rides a lot smoother.
Ya I know a Geezer Glide :D but I'll tell ya what dem old geezers know a thing or two about distance riding.I've done as much as 8000 miles in just two weeks loaded with camping gear and riding two up .700 mile days are a breeze on the big glide.Next time try one out ;)
I'm think'n about a 1200R as a second bike ,as much as I like the Glide there's noth'n like a hot Sporty on local day rides through the mountain twisties but I'll always have a touring bike,I'm hooked! :smoke
